‘Heels’, ‘Run The World’ & ‘Blindspotting’ Axed At Starz; ‘The Venery of Samantha Bird’ Not Moving Forward
Image
Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.

The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.

Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.

Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Starz Drama Series ‘The Venery Of Samantha Bird’ Pauses Production With Two Episodes Left To Shoot
Image
Exclusive: Starz’ The Venery of Samantha Bird has shut down production as a result of the writers strike.

Deadline understands that the drama series has paused filming with two episodes of its eight episode order left to shoot. The series shoots in Montreal.

It comes after Netflix’s Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable and HBO Max’s Hacks were shut down for similar reasons and writers rooms for shows such as Starz’ Power Book III: Raising Kanan, NBC’s Night Court, Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Showtime’s Yellowjackets and ABC’s Abbott Elementary also closed their writing rooms.

The series stars Katherine Langford in the title role and was created by Anna Moriarty.

It follows Samantha Bird, who, while visiting family in New England, Samantha Bird reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But underneath their fever dream lurks a more unsettling interpretation of this affair.

Starz has added seven more to the cast of its forthcoming drama, “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” including Finn Jones, Francesca Reale, Embeth Davidtz, Brenda Strong, Adam Faison, Tyrone Marshall Brown and Shalini Bathina.

The new batch of series regulars joins previously announced star Katherine Langford, who will portray the show’s titular character.

‘Goonies’ Reenactment Pilot, ‘Blood Relative’ Not Moving Forward at Fox
Image
The untitled “Goonies” reenactment pilot and “Blood Relative” are no longer moving ahead at Fox, Variety has learned.

The two projects were holdovers from Fox’s 2020 pilot season that were delayed in shooting due to the pandemic. The decision to ax “Blood Relative” comes as something of a surprise, given that it starred Oscar winner Melissa Leo in the lead role. The move also comes as Fox has given out two series orders from its drama pilot slate already: one for “The Cleaning Lady” starring Elodie Yung and another for the dance drama “The Big Leap.”

Fox has also ordered an animated comedy set in ancient Greece from Dan Harmon, the drama “Our Kind of People” from Karin Gist and Lee Daniels, and the mockumentary series “This County.”

“Blood Relative” was to follow Louise Kelly (Leo), an expert in genetic genealogy. Tate Donovan, Tyrone Marshall Brown, Dascha Polanco, Dawnn Lewis,...

Network has also decided against “Blood Relative” pilot

Fox has decided not to move forward with two drama pilots, “Blood Relative” and an untitled drama that was to follow three kids as they tried to make a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg’s “The Goonies.”

The network was said to be happy with both but ultimately decided to give series orders to “Monarch” and “The Cleaning Lady” instead, a person with knowledge told TheWrap.

“Blood Relative” was to star Melissa Leo as Louise Kelly, a genetic genealogist who applies her talents to crime scene forensics. Tate Donovan and Tyrone Marshall Brown were also set to star.

The “Goonies” re-enactment series did not have title but was described as such: “After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope, and...

Tracie Thoms (Truth Be Told) and Sarah Catherine Hook (Conjuring 3) also have been cast as series regulars in the forensic genealogy-themed crime drama from writer-producer Chris Levinson and producer Liza Chasin. The network recently committed to filming filming all six of its 2020 pilots, including Blood Relative, extending the casts’ options.

Love Is (2016)
TV Review: ‘Love Is….’
Love Is (2016)
Romantic comedies are surprisingly rare on television. Recently, if a show could at all be described as romantic and/or a comedy, there’s usually been a biting twist as if the show wanted to distance itself from any trace of saccharine storytelling. Shows like FX’s “You’re The Worst,” HBO’s “Insecure,” and Netflix’s recently concluded “Love” hinge on romance, but funnel it all through a purposefully cynical, acidic point of view.

“Love Is…” is not that kind of TV rom-com. Based on the real life relationship of creator Mara Brock Akil (“Being Mary Jane”) and executive producer Salim Akil (“Black Lightning”), “Love Is” embraces a far more traditionally swoony kind of romance, even down to the “When Harry Met Sally” style framing device of 2027 Nuri (Wendy Davis) and Yasir (Clarke Peters) telling the story of their 30 year romance straight to camera.

Their love story begins in...

Why Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil Shared Their Love Story in ‘Love Is__’
Mara Brock Akil
“Love is… getting my way,” Mara Brock Akil joked at the premiere of Own’s new scripted series “Love Is__” Monday night. The series creator was standing on the carpet alongside her husband, director and producer Salim Akil, ahead of the premiere screening at NeueHouse in Hollywood when she explained why there was an empty space in the series title.

“There is not one definition of love and we are supposed to fill in that [space] for ourselves,” Mara explained, adding that it needs to be a commitment between people.

While Salim has collaborated with Mara on a number of projects, including “Being Mary Jane” and “Black Lightning,” he admitted to being hesitant about disclosing aspects of their personal lives onscreen.

“I wasn’t ready to do it, [but] Mara was,” said Salim. “I think part of the theme of ‘Love Is__’ is love realizing you can’t allow another person to do anything.
