Back in 2022, Fox’s The Masked Singer revealed that the Jack in the Box was actually former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani — a figure once known, however speciously, for unifying his city in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, but more recently for a string of high-profile humiliations linked to his role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
At the time, I wrote about reality TV’s history of image laundering, particularly when it came to disgraced and semi-disgraced conservative politicos, from Omarosa Manigault Newman to Anthony Scaramucci (Celebrity Big Brother), Sean Spicer (Dancing With the Stars) to Sarah Palin (The Masked Singer) and more.
Image laundering isn’t necessarily the thing reality TV does most frequently; its primary appeal still stems from its ability to turn ordinary people into quick-burning stars, stretching back to landmarks like Candid Camera or The Gong Show. But it’s a venerable subgenre,...

“Saturday Night Live” celebrated its 50th anniversary by setting a new record for Emmy nominations, a landmark that was never really in doubt.
The long-running comedy series went into this year’s nominations already holding the record as the most nominated program in Primetime Emmy Awards history, with its 341 total nominations far surpassing second place show “Game of Thrones.” It added an additional 31 noms on Tuesday, giving it a new record total of 372.
“SNL” also topped its previous record of 22 nominations in 2017. This haul comes after a relative slump that faced in the comedy variety show in the early 2020s.
“SNL’s” 31 nods consist of nominations across their various ventures and specials in the show’s 50th anniversary season. Entries like “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” and “SNL50: The Homecoming Concert” were recognized in various categories like Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special.

If you wanted to cut Seth MacFarlane some slack, you could concede that the writer and producer was only 25 when Family Guy hit the airwaves. But now he’s 51 and wrestling with the legacy of his outrageous and sometimes objectionable creation. “This is the conversation that tortures me at night,” he recently told CBS Sunday Morning.
“When I started the show, my attitude was like, ‘It doesn't matter. None of it matters. It’s like, if it’s funny let’s do it,’” he explained. “And the older I’ve gotten, I look back at shows that we’ve done and I’m like, gosh, I guess it’s a little more complicated than that, isn’t it? Comedy and jokes do have an impact.”
Unlike contemporaries such as South Park and The Simpsons, which also have come under fire for offensive humor, Family Guy is known for courting controversy seemingly for its own sake.

An open letter circulating on social media and sent to various news organizations, including Deadline, is calling on The Broadway League, The American Theatre Wing and “the greater theatre community” to demand “accountability, justice, and respect” in light of recent remarks made by Patti LuPone about fellow Broadway actors Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald.
The letter, organized by a group called Theater for Change, has received more than 500 signatures from what the group says are members of the Broadway theater industry and community including performers and Tony Award winners Wendell Pierce, Maleah Joi Moon and James Monroe Iglehart.
Read the letter here.
“Recently, Patti LuPone made deeply inappropriate and unacceptable public comments about two of Broadway’s most respected and beloved artists: Kecia Lewis and Audra McDonald,” the letter states. “In a published interview with The New Yorker, she referred to Kecia Lewis — a Black woman and a 40-year veteran...

In February 2025, YouTube turned 20. The video site has gone through a lot over the past two decades, including an acquisition, an earnings glow-up, and multiple generations of star creators. In our 20 Years of YouTube series, we’ll examine the uploads, trends, and influencers that have defined the world’s favorite video site — one year at a time. Click here for a full archive of the series.
2008 was the year the YouTube community awakened its collective political consciousness.
Several factors informed that trend. The 2008 U.S. presidential race, which ultimately resulted in the historic election of Barack Obama, united the platform like never before. Obama impersonator Iman “Alphacat” Crosson became one of YouTube’s biggest stars, LisaNova‘s Sarah Palin spoofs did big numbers as well, and CNN even teamed up with YouTube for a memorable debate collab.

A jury sided with the New York Times after a retrial of Sarah Palin’s claims that the news outlet defamed her in a 2017 editorial.
The jury deliberated for about two hours Tuesday before reaching their verdict.
The June 14, 2017 Times piece, written hours after a shooter opened fire on a congressional softball game, delved into harsh political rhetoric and its links to violence. James Bennet, then the opinion editor, said in the original trial he was responsible for inserting an edit into the story that linked Palin’s political action committee to a 2011 mass shooting, in which six people were killed and Rep. Gabby Giffords was severely wounded.
In fact, no link was established between the Pac and the mass shooting, and the Times corrected the piece. But Palin still sued.

Aimee Lou Wood made waves last weekend when she called out Saturday Night Live for a White Potus sketch that featured a “mean” impression — mainly, Sarah Sherman impersonating Wood with a massive pair of prosthetic front teeth. “Last thing I’ll say on the matter. I am not thin-skinned. I actually love being taken the piss out of when it’s clever and in good spirits,” she said on her Instagram Stories, per Deadline. “But the joke was about fluoride. I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth.”
Wood is hardly the first to get prickly about SNL’s insensitive impressions. Here are seven more celebrities who hated being ridiculed on Saturday Night Live…
1 Britney Spears
Spears might be the first celebrity to get irked by two different impressions.

Less than a week after HBO's original movie Mountainhead received a title and a premiere date, it's already ski jumped into the top five in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie Emmy predictions.
Why? The telefilm about a group of billionaire friends who deal with a financial crisis while at a swanky ski resort has an awards-worthy pedigree both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Mountainhead is written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, the seven-time Emmy winner for Succession. This marks his directorial debut.
The cast is led by Steve Carell , Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef as the four main billionaires. They're joined by Hadley Robinson, Andy Daly, Ali Kinkade, Daniel Oreskes, David Thompson, Amie MacKenzie, and Ava Kostia.
Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for made-for-television movies, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series.

Bristol Palin took to social media on Monday (March 31) to mark an entire year of being alcohol-free. The daughter of former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin shared an update with her fans on her Instagram Story, writing (per Fox News Digital), “365 days without alcohol.. *which sounds dramatic because I’ve never been a big ‘drinker.’ But this year of having a completely sober mind has allowed me to reevaluate a lot.” She added, “I don’t want to alter the state of my mind, and don’t want to ‘take the edge off’ of anything. 10/10 would recommend.” Bristol’s update comes after she revealed her facial paralysis back in January. On January 29, the 34-year-old mom of three told her Instagram followers, “My mouth was pulling this way and it just felt a little off. So I went, looked in the mirror. I’m like ‘Wow. This is looking a little weird.

It wasn’t hard to guess how the recent Saturday Night Live starring Mikey Madison would kick off last weekend. Surprise, surprise — the cold-open sketch skewered the week’s hottest political story, with Andrew Dismukes as Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth unintentionally entering the group chat of a group of teenage girls.
Just another meh sketch in a long run of meh cold opens over the past, well, decade or so. Somewhere during the show’s run — was it Will Ferrell’s George Bush impression? Amy Poehler finished her Saturday Night Live tenure as one of the show's all-time greats. During that final year in Studio 8H, Poehler delivered her favorite SNL sketch of all time.
Poehler joined SNL in 2001 after making a name for herself through Upright Citizens Brigade and appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. She quickly established herself as a versatile performer, capable of impressions, absurd characters, and physical comedy.
That appreciation for physical comedy was behind "I'm No Angel," the sketch Poehler told The Ringer is her all-time favorite sketch. It came during the 2008-2009 season, Poehler's last.
Poehler conceived of the sketch with longtime collaborator and SNL writer Emily Spivey. Both Poehler and Spivey were pregnant at the time and were already looking for an excuse to work the song "I'm No Angel" into a sketch.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) declared that she would like to serve in President Donald Trump’s second administration.
“Would you ever go into the Trump administration,” NewsNation anchor Leland Vittert asked Palin in a recent interview. “Have you thought about it?”
“Yes, I would love to,” the former Alaska governor replied. “I thought that there would be a position in Energy – in that Department – because that’s my baby – is – wanting energy independence for America. You know, that’s all about the security and sovereignty of our nation, which is to be energy-independent. But that hasn’t happened.”
“I don’t know, Leland,” she added. “There are some gatekeepers around that administration. They are tight!”
Palin leaned into her complaint, “It gets frustrating for those who have a heart to serve.”

Bristol Palin, 34, the daughter of former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, has recently spoken out about her ongoing battle with facial paralysis in an Instagram Stories post. (Updated with video) Saturday Night Live has had a lot of Potus mocking over the decades, but you wouldn’t have known it from Sunday’s SNL50: The Anniversary Special.
Tonight’s live show had Alec Baldwin, Will Ferrell, Jay Pharoah, Tina Fey, Jason Sudeikis, Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler in attendance but there was nothing of the presidents and presidential candidates they’ve played and poked fun at over nearly 10 presidencies.
In an era where Donald Trump and the FCC are targeting the media and media owners, Baldwin’s acclaimed impression of the former Celebrity Apprentice and SNL host was noticeably absent. Whether or not it was the chill of further legal and regulatory action against NBC owners Comcast, with almost everything else and the kitchen sink from SNL‘s history on screen tonight, seeing no politics out of the Potus-mocking show’s long legacy was almost as rank...

Exclusive: Lbi Entertainment has signed for management the prolific Emmy winning writer, director and producer Danny Strong.
Strong, whose recent work includes Dopesick, Empire and Recount, is currently working on a classic Hollywood-era film for director Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Strong wrote the script on spec which was quickly taken off the market by Lbi. Strong is also currently co-writing Ultra with Tony Kushner for Steven Spielberg, based on the Rachel Maddow podcast, Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra.
Strong’s resume includes pop culture successes like the Fox drama series Empire, which he co-created, served as exec producer and director of several episodes, but he is one of Hollywood’s stronger writers in hot button and political topics. He was the creator and showrunner of the Hulu series Dopesick, which starred Michael Keaton and focused on the Opioid scourge and the role of the Sackler family’s Purdue Pharma in spreading it.

We certainly didn’t expect to hear about this. There are new reports that say Bristol Palin, the daughter of Sarah Palin, says she has been suffering from a neurological disorder that is “pulling her face” to the left. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.
Celeb News: Sarah Palin’s Daughter Bristol Has Tragic News To Share
Palin says the facial paralysis started over a week ago, making her face numb.
She put it this way, “Within a couple of hours, the entire left side of my face was numb and just paralyzed. I couldn’t really blink my eye… definitely had no movement on the side of my face.“
If that weren’t enough, Palin said she went to the doctor and nothing showed up in the tests or the Ct scan. The doctor told her it was likely a case of Bell’s Palsy, a temporary facial paralysis.

Teen Mom alum Bristol Palin has revealed that she is in recovery from a scare with facial paralysis.
On Jan. 29, Palin shared an Instagram Story video, saying, “I woke up nine days ago with a weird little sensation in my face.”
“My mouth was pulling this way and it just felt a little off. So, I went and looked in the mirror. I’m like, ‘Wow, this is looking a little weird,'” she said.
“Couldn’t really blink my eye, definitely had no movement on the side of my face…so crazy…went to the doctor. They ran tests, they did a Ct scan [and] they put me on steroids, put me on other medications,” Palin recounted. “Nothing came back with all the results. They think it’s just a case of Bell’s palsy maybe brought on by stress or lack of sleep.”
Palin, 34, speculated, “I’m not really sure.

After an eight-year hiatus, the A&e reality TV series Duck Dynasty is returning to television, albeit with a new name. Variety reports that the new series will be called Duck Dynasty: The Revival, and the network has given the new series a two-season 20-episode order. It will premiere sometime this summer on A&e.
The original Duck Dynasty ran from 2012 to 2017 and followed the Robertson family and their duck call business in Louisiana. The new series will, according to the network, not feature family patriarch Phil Robertson, who, per NBC News back in December 2013, made homophobic and racially charged comments about African-Americans during the Civil Rights era. At that time A&e briefly suspended him from the series.
The network quickly walked back the suspension after fans and some right-leaning politicians, including Sarah Palin, called for a boycott of A&e, saying that Robertson had a right to his opinion and...

In recent social media posts, Sarah Palin appeared to be venturing her frustration over presidential-elected Donald Trump for not receiving a spot as a member in his coveted cabinet.
The former Alaska governor and GOP vice-presidential candidate has advocated and supported Trump since 2011. However, in a series of cryptic posts on social media, Palin shared posts from fans questioning why she had not been selected for his cabinet. She posted a screenshot of a fan asking her: “What about you?” Her reply was, “Thank you.”
Palin also posted a rant by one of her supporters to her X and Instagram accounts that labeled her as “Trump before Trump,” again pandering to why she had not been given a spot on his cabinet.

We’re seven episodes in, and Saturday Night Live has a 50th anniversary problem. The season thus far has ranged from “Okay, pretty good” to “hit and miss” (Bill Burr and Michael Keaton) to “yeesh” (Jean Smart and last night’s episode with in-over-her-head Charli Xcx.) That’s par for the course for the past decade of SNL, but months of drumroll leading into the anniversary year promised more.
Last night’s show was emblematic of the season’s mediocrity. Overall, SNL continues to suffer from the same self-inflicted wounds. These are the show’s three biggest missteps so far this season…
1 Recycling Old Cast Members and Guests
This bug could have been a feature. For the show’s 50th year, why not a rotating group of former SNL all-stars? It works as both fan service and a way to bring back performers who, frankly, are surer bets than current cast members.

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore has been a cinematic muse for the likes of Todd Haynes, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Altman, Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg and the Coen Brothers, to name but a few. But how many of her films are classics? Let’s take a look back at 17 of her greatest roles, ranked worst to best.
Moore became a darling of independent cinema with appearances in such films as “Short Cuts” (1993), “Vanya on 42nd Street” (1994), and “Safe” (1995). It didn’t take long for Oscar voters to notice her talents, and the Academy rewarded her with four nominations in quick succession: Best Actress for “The End of the Affair” (1999) and “Far From Heaven” (2002); Best Supporting Actress for “Boogie Nights” (1997) and “The Hours” (2002). Her two bids in 2002 put her in an elite group of performers to receive lead and supporting citations in the same year.

Arguably one of the most surprising reality shows since it premiered, The Masked Singer has a devoted fan following. Those viewers will speak out when they think the theme nights aren't fan favorites, and they follow what happens to the show's past winners. However, those same fans may not know about Nick Cannon's weird insurance policy or about how The Masked Singer came up in a lawsuit.
Over the years, there have been many lawsuits involving reality shows. For example, Too Hot To Handles Harry Jowsey filed a lawsuit against his ex he met on the show and CBS sued a writer for claims they made about Big Brother. However, when The Masked Singer became part of a lawsuit, it was because Sarah Palin wanted her time on the show to be forgotten when she sued The New York Times.

Quick Links What Is the Equal-Time Rule? SNL's Possible Law Violation and History of Political Guest Stars
If you haven't been paying attention, election season is upon us! The candidates have been all over the media landscape in the last few weeks, pitching their case to the American voters. While the bulk of these appearances have come via traditional interviews and rallies, we have seen politics and pop culture intersect on a few occasions.
The most recent of these came on this weekend's Saturday Night Live episode, their last show before the election. SNL typically goes all out every four years by bringing in big-name guest stars to play the candidates. Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, Dana Carvey, Jim Carrey, and Jason Sudeikis as Joe Biden are some of the show's most famous political guest stars. From Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump to Barack Obama, an appearance on Saturday Night Live has become an obligatory whistle-stop for presidential candidates over the past 20 years. Kamala Harris was the latest to join the parade last night, communing with her comedy doppelgänger Maya Rudolph to make one final push for votes in advance of Tuesday’s election.
Looking at one another in the mirror, Harris and “Harris” gave each other words of encouragement during the campaign’s final days. There was a shot at Trump, albeit one that required viewers to have seen the viral video in which the former president had trouble locating a garbage truck door handle. The real Harris winced at Rudolph’s impression: “I don’t really laugh like that, do I?”
“A little bit,” Kamala/Maya conceded.
Then the two shared some cutesy Kamala puns. “Now, Kamala, take my palmala. The American people want to stop the chaos,...

Who needs Maya Rudolph when you can show off the real thing?
U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is expected to appear on “Saturday Night Live,” according to a person familiar with the matter, the latest Oval Office hopeful to visit the show in an election year in a bid to win support and generate new publicity for a campaign. She has been played during the show’s current season — its 50th — by former cast member Rudolph.
A new schedule released by the Harris campaign indicated that the Vice President would fly from Charlotte, N.C., where she was attending an event, and fly to New York City on Saturday evening, landing at 7:21 p.m. That would presumably give her ample time to travel to Studio 8H in NBC’s Rockefeller Center headquarters, where “SNL” is produced, before the show’s usual 11:30 p.m.

Updated with Nielsen data: The CBS News vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and Jd Vance drew 43.15 million viewers Tuesday, far short of the audience for the 2020 matchup between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence.
The figures from Nielsen released today are across 15 networks.
The debate between Pence and Harris in 2020 drew 59 million viewers, the second most-watched VP debate in history. The 2008 debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin has the record, drawing an estimated 69.9 million.
The Walz-Vance debate still beat the 37 million who tuned in to the debate between Pence and Tim Kaine.
According to Nielsen, 29.65 million viewers were 55 years and above, 9.47 million were 35-54, and 3.01 million were 18-34.
ABC News’ Trump-Harris presidential debate last month drew 67.14 million across 17 networks last month.

The lone debate between the two major-party candidates for vice president in 2024 drew a big audience — but not nearly as large as four years ago.
Final Nielsen ratings for Tuesday’s face-off between Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for vice president, and Republican nominee Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, put the debate at 43.15 million viewers across 15 networks. More than 90 percent of those viewers — 40.25 million — watched on the big four broadcast networks and three largest cable news outlets (CNN, Fox News and MSNBC). Preliminary figures had those seven outlets totaling 38.62 million viewers.
The ratings for Tuesday’s telecast are a little below the historical average for VP debates — and down by 25.5 percent from the 57.92 million people who watched the 2020 debate between sitting Vice President Mike Pence and then-Sen. Kamala Harris (who is leading the Democratic ticket this year).

“You can’t bring the actual people who are running on because of election laws and the equal time provisions,” Michaels told THR. “You can’t have the main candidates without having all the candidates, and there are lots of minor candidates that are only on the ballot in, like, three states and that becomes really complicated.”
Of course, “SNL” has had candidates on before Election Day in the past, most notoriously when Donald Trump hosted in November 2015, before he became the Republican frontrunner in the 2016 election. At the time, NBC measured Trump’s time onscreen...

Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season will kick off nearly over a month ahead of the 2024 presidential election with plenty of material for its cold opens and other political skits.
With Maya Rudolph returning to portray Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, its likely that James Austin Johnson will portray Donald Trump and or Joe Biden in parodies of the candidates. Doug Emhoff (who has been portrayed in the past by Martin Short) and Vice President Tim Walz will also likely receive parodies, though Short’s Only Murders in the Building costar Steve Martin has declined the ask to portray Walz.
The first five consecutive SNL shows’ hosts and musical guests have been announced, and given the volume and talent of cast members over the years, a look back at political parodies by hosts, guests and members of the comedy ensemble can be found below.

For the time being, Saturday Night Live viewers will have to settle for the show’s political impressionists.
In a recent interview ahead of the show’s 50th season, SNL creator and long-running maestro Lorne Michaels revealed that he hadn’t reached out to the real-life candidates, and he didn’t intend to before the 2024 election. “You can’t bring the actual people who are running on because of election laws and the equal time provisions,” he told The Hollywood Reporter, and then clarified: “You can’t have the main candidates without having all the candidates, and there are lots of minor candidates that are only on the ballot in, like, three states and that becomes really complicated.”
Michaels has focused his attention instead on the mix of new and returning performers that he’s tapped to impersonate the Washington, D.C. power players, including Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph), Tim Walz...

He is slightly embarrassed to admit it, but Nicholas Podany first watched When Harry Met Sally as he was gearing up for an audition to portray the classic rom-com’s star, Billy Crystal.
Podany was going out for Jason Retiman’s Saturday Night (in theaters this weekend in limited release before opening wider on Oct 11.) Told in real-time, it tracks the 90 madcap minutes before the first episode of Saturday Night Live in 1975.
Podany, who trained at Julliard and had appeared on Broadway in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, auditioned first for SNL cast member Dan Aykroyd. For that self-tape, he recreated Aykroyd’s “Super Bass-o-Matic” sketch that saw the actor pulverizing a bass in a blender. Podany was then asked to audition for the role of a young Lorne Michaels and got a callback, but not for Michaels. Instead, he was sent pages from the script to read for a young Crystal.

Vice President Kamala Harris told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that if anyone breaks into her home is going to “get shot.”
Harris made this comment while discussing gun violence on Thursday night during the live-streamed event Unite For America hosted by Winfrey.
“Look, I think for far too long on the issue of gun violence — some people have been pushing a really false choice to suggest you’re either in favor of the Second Amendment or you want to take everyone’s away,” the vice president said.

During a televised interview, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) supported the former president and condemned Vice President Kamala Harris.
On Saturday, news anchor Rosanna Lockwood questioned Palin on her show Global News Today with Rosanna Lockwood.
Lockwood asked the ex-Alaska governor why she thought the former president “was fact-checked more than Harris” at the debate.

“I think it’s very obvious over here in the U.S. that our mainstream media is quite liberal, and they would love to see a puppet like Kamala Harris be elected – somebody who is actually controlled not by her own convictions and her own experience and her own vision for this country and the world but for globalists really, not just socialists but communists who want to control the people,” Palin stated.

Director Aj Schnack takes viewers on an informative journey across Alaska in his documentary Majority Rules. Released in 2024, the film examines recent electoral reforms in the state, which eliminated traditional party primaries and introduced ranked choice voting. Drawing from interviews on both sides of the issues, Schnack aims to present an unbiased look at these changes and their potential wider implications.
Majority Rules centers on Alaska’s decision to open up its primaries and implement ranked ballots for certain races. This new system was unexpectedly put in place following the death of long-time Congressman Don Young. His vacant seat triggered a special election where the reforms could be tested for the first time. Viewers are shown campaign battles between familiar figures like Sarah Palin as well as new contenders embracing altered strategies.
On the national level, Schnack explores ongoing debates around modernizing America’s voting processes. While some see reforms as making elections more representative,...
