The Restoration of ‘Beatles ’64’ Brings the Most Iconic Moment in Rock ‘n’ Roll History Back to Life
Image
In February 1964, as America was still reeling from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, The Beatles arrived in the U.S. for the first time and took the country by storm. Their debut appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” drew more than 73 million viewers, and they created a media frenzy everywhere they went, a situation playfully recreated in Richard Lester‘s classic musical comedy “A Hard Day’s Night,” which went into production right after The Beatles returned to England after their two week trip.

Before Lester’s film, however, legendary documentarians Albert and David Maysles — then at the beginning of their careers — documented the Beatles’ U.S. sojourn in footage that has barely been seen since it was shot due to a variety of clearance issues (not to mention the fact that United Artists didn’t really want the material in general release where it could dilute the appeal...

Watch Paul McCartney Debut ‘New’ Beatles Song ‘Now and Then’ in Concert

Paul McCartney played his first concert of 2024 on Tuesday night at Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. He kept largely to the script from last year until the midway point when he performed “Now and Then” for the first time.

John Lennon captured the wistful piano ballad “Now and Then” on a tape recorder at his New York apartment building in 1977. Yoko Ono gave the tape to the surviving Beatles in 1994, along with “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” for inclusion on the Beatles Anthology box sets. They attempted to...

Legendary Beatles Documentary ‘Let It Be’ Is Now Available for First Time in Decades
Image
“Let It Be,” the legendary 1970 Beatles documentary that has been out of circulation since the ’80s, is now streaming on Disney+ in a new restoration by Peter Jackson and his Park Road Post Production. This long-lost Beatles artifact, which inspired Jackson to dig deeper with his Emmy-winning “The Beatles: Get Back” docuseries, captures director Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s fly-on-the-wall snapshot of the Fab Four’s creatively productive yet tense studio sessions for their final two albums — “Let It Be” and “Abbey Road” — followed by their joyous rooftop concert at Apple Corps headquarters.

“Peter’s a Beatles fan par excellence and, through his investigation [for ‘Get Back’], he ended up with this wonderful giant’s mood of a movie because he had the time to do it,” Lindsay-Hogg told IndieWire. “And also because he was a great tinkerer as well, he was able to come up with visual things and audio things that...

The Long, Winding, and Weird Legacy of the Beatles’ Notorious ‘Let It Be’ Movie
Image
Let It Be is back? Nobody thought this day would ever come. The Beatles’ 1970 lost-lost documentary Let It Be has always been dismissed as the band’s tombstone. It’s a movie that people regard as a disaster but hardly anyone has actually seen, just like Magical Mystery Tour. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Let It Be came out in May 1970, right when the Fabs were splitting up, and went down in history as their “break-up film.” All four refused to show up for the premiere. Apple has kept it officially unavailable for decades.

Def Leppard Announce 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition of Pyromania
Image
Def Leppard have announced a 40th anniversary expanded reissue of their seminal 1983 album Pyromania, arriving April 26th.

The legendary UK band is pulling all the stops for the reissue campaign, digging into the archives for previously unreleased demos, outtakes, rough mixes, and live recordings.

The 4-cd/Blu-Ray and 2-lp editions will include the original remastered album as well as these archival recordings, including a rare rough mix of “Photograph” with an unfinished vocal track and a previously “long lost” demo of “No You Can’t Do That” — an outtake and the “11th track” from the Pyromania sessions.

“Rediscovering dusty old cassettes which were brilliantly restored by [executive producer] Ronan [McHugh] and finding the long lost unfinished ’11th track’ was a journey only few of us are lucky enough to take,” remarked singer Joe Elliot in a press release. “What a trip!”

The 4-cd box set also features two era-specific concert recordings: December 18th,...

Breaking Baz: Matthew Vaughn On The Thrills And Spills Of Making ‘Argylle’, Why Marv Films Is Not For Sale & How Claudia Schiffer Saved His Career
Image
Exclusive: Matthew Vaughn reveals that last year he received what he terms “flattering” offers to sell Marv Films, the production company behind productions that include the Kick-Ass and Kingsman franchises and the Apple Original Films romance spy-thriller Argylle. That film is having its world premiere today in London, ahead of its February 2 U.S. theatrical release through Universal.

Marv is owned and controlled by Vaughn and Claudia Schiffer, his wife of 23 years. At the time, he says, “everyone was buying everything, and it was all very flattering and tempting.”

Vaughn admits he that nearly entered into a deal to sell, but his biggest mentor — whom he won’t name — cautioned him, saying, ”There’s no money in the world which would make it worthwhile for you having a boss.”

Vaughn shot back, “What do you mean?” And his friend went, ”Trust me, it will be a f*cking disaster.”

Ringo Starr Addresses “Terrible Rumors” That New Beatles Song ‘Now and Then’ Used AI for John Lennon’s Voice
Image
Ringo Starr is brushing off “terrible rumors” that he and Paul McCartney used AI to recreate John Lennon’s voice for their newly released Beatles song “Now and Then.”

The Beatles drummer addressed the issue in a new interview with AARP magazine about his life during and after his time in the iconic band and his reunion with McCartney to produce an unfinished track.

While Starr and McCartney, along with the late George Harrison, had teamed to release other demos featuring Lennon back in the 1990s, they had left “Now and Then” on the table after an issue with separating Lennon’s vocals from the instrumentals made it difficult to complete the track. That changed when the musicians worked with director Peter Jackson on the Disney+ documentary Get Back. During the process of producing that film, a new technology was developed based on machine learning, a branch of AI, that...

It was short notice, with the session booked for May 1 at Capitol Records Studio A. The musicians who could make it said yes promptly. One was Caroline Buckman, a violist with a big, warm personality and eclectic music tastes. In her 20-odd years as a session musician, she’d performed on more than 100 recordings for Christina Aguilera, John Cale, and Harry Styles, among others. Over the years, Joe Jonas had become a good friend.

Peter Jackson Reunites The Beatles in Video for “Now and Then”: Watch
Image
The Beatles have shared the music video for their newly released final song, “Now and Then.” The visual was helmed by Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson, whose work on the 2021 Beatles documentary, Get Back, was the genesis for “Now and Then” finally being completed.

As previously reported, “Now and Then” originally began as a home demo of John Lennon’s, which was then worked on by the other three Beatles in the mid-1990s, during the same period that they made their only other post-breakup songs, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love.” At the time, though, a loud hum in Lennon’s original recording rendered the demo essentially unusable, and though an effort was made to flesh the song out, it was ultimately abandoned.

However, in 2021, while working on Get Back, Jackson and his team utilized WingNut Films’ Mal audio AI technology to separate and isolate tracks that they...

Now and Then: The Beatles transform a John Lennon demo into what could be the band’s last collaborative song
Image
Today is a special day for fans of The Beatles, as the iconic rock band has released its first song since 1995. Titled “Now and Then,” the track is a technological marvel after Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr used machine learning and an old lo-fi John Lennon demo to create the finished piece. The song’s origin dates back to the mid-’90s, when McCartney, George Harrison, and Starr reunited for the group’s Anthology album. Other new songs on the album include Free as a Bird” and “Real Love,” but work on “Now and Then” stalled when layering technology failed the band’s attempt to polish the track.

“In John’s demo tape, the piano was a little hard to hear. And in those days, of course, we didn’t have the technology to do the separation,” McCartney said in a new documentary about the song. “Every time we wanted...

The Beatles Return for One More Masterpiece With New Song ‘Now and Then’
Image
The Beatles have released their new single, the long-awaited “Now and Then.” It’s an emotionally powerful song written by John Lennon as a home demo in the 1970s. But it’s also a true Beatles collaboration, with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr playing and singing together. Nothing like “Now and Then” has ever happened before. It’s a unique music story: John Lennon leaves a song unfinished, but years later, his friends come together to complete it for him, simply out of love and musical brotherhood. It...

The Beatles’ Last Song “Now and Then” Is a Final, Melancholic Goodbye From the Band
Image
In a most dignified way, The Beatles will release their last song this year. The rollout will be minimal — a cassette photo here, a title billboard there, a digital/streaming release on Thursday, Nov. 2 — and the last recording made by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr will still be a classic rock standard by the end of the year. All the rumors are true. The song is “Now and Then,” and it is beautiful, bittersweet, timeless, and completely natural. It will be issued as a double-a side single with “Love Me Do,” the band’s first release. Yes, it will be the version with Ringo on drums, not tambourine.

“Love Me Do” will be the first song heard on the upcoming reissue of The Beatles’ 1973 “Red” album (officially titled 1962-1966). “Now and Then” will close the remastered reissue of the “Blue” record (1967-1970) comprised of the group’s greatest hits.

The Beatles Are Releasing a New Song in the Year 2023
Image
Who had the release of a new Beatles song on their 2023 bingo card? On November 2nd, the legendary band will return with what is being described as their “final song.”

Featuring all four Beatles — John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr — “Now and Then” began its journey as a home demo of Lennon’s, which was then worked on by the other three Beatles in the mid-90s, during the same period that they made their only other post-breakup songs, “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love.” At the time, though, a loud hum in Lennon’s original recording rendered the demo essentially unusable, and though an effort was made to flesh the song out, it was ultimately abandoned.

Fast-forward to 2021, when Peter Jackson was working on his celebrated documentary, The Beatles: Get Back. For that production, Jackson’s team utilized WingNut Films’ Mal audio AI technology to...

The Last Beatles Song: ‘Now and Then’ Is the Fab Four’s Final Farewell
Image
The last Beatles song. Sixty years after their debut single, “Love Me Do,” there’s a new closing chapter to the world’s most beloved group. On Thursday, Nov. 2, the Beatles will drop their final song, “Now and Then.” John Lennon wrote it and sang it at the piano, at home in 1977. George Harrison played his guitar parts in 1995, when the three surviving Beatles attempted it at the Anthology sessions. Now, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have finished their friends’ work — a labor of love that seems to sum up...

Ringo Starr talks about 'New' Beatles Track at 83rd b'day celebration
Image
The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, as is his custom, took the occasion of his 83rd birthday to lead local friends in a chant of “peace and love” in a Beverly Hills park, while a worldwide audience of streaming Beatles fans looked on, admiring his youthful looks and demeanour and wondering if there’s any way to have what he’s having.

Brother-in-law Joe Walsh joined him for the event, as did their respective wives, sisters Barbara and Marjorie Bach, reports Variety. By coincidence, both Starr and Walsh have been a part of headline news stories in recent days — the former because of a forthcoming Beatles single, the latter because of the announcement of an Eagles farewell tour.

The two stars talked with press about those headlines, among other things, before the late-morning party got underway in earnest.

As Paul McCartney recently did, Starr took time out to say that a...

The Chemical Brothers Release New Single And Music Video “No Reason”
No Reason (2010)
“Good lord. Demonstrating their status as all time icons and one of the single greatest influences on electronic music as a whole, The Chemical Brothers left the crowd in a state of jaw-dropped awe.” Billboard (Portola Festival, San Francisco Sept 2022)

“Thirty years in, the Chemical Brothers are still digging their own purely escapist sonic rabbit holes. At a time of great cultural and global insecurity, there’s never been a more tempting time to get lost in their sensory overload.” Pitchfork

17 March 2023 – The Chemical Brothers – one of the most successful bands in the history of electronic music – return with a new single. A highlight of the Grammy Award-winning band’s recent live shows and DJ sets, No Reason is unmistakable and irresistible, built from a cascading melody, a heavy acid riff and a snare roll that rattles like a military tattoo. The Best Alternate Takes From The Beatles Revolver
Image
Albums revolve at 33-and-a-third spins a minute. The Beatles’ Revolver seemed to bend time when it was first released, putting more into the grooves than any rock and roll band had done up to that point. This was by design, as the group tried to put a world of musical education into one record in a class all its own.

While many fans are rightfully content with the official release, the castoffs and early attempts at the songs are jewels for the more avid Beatlemaniacs who collected bootlegs. The alternate takes were fascinating, the flubbed ones hysterical, and the few songs which got out that had never been released officially became part of an ever-expanding regular rotation. As a fan, these are treasures, to musicians they are an education. Giles Martin’s remastering of the 2022 Revolver: Special Edition is a crash course in elation.

In his liner notes section, Paul McCartney...

‘If These Walls Could Sing’ Review: Abbey Road Studio Gets a Slight, Sunny Tribute
Anton Corbijn
This review originally ran September 3, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.

If you’re a fan of a particular era of British rock ’n’ roll, this was the right year to be at the Telluride Film Festival. The festival’s opening day brought onetime photographer Anton Corbijn’s “Squaring the Circle,” which looked at the rock design company Hipgnosis through memories from Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Roger Waters, Noah Gallagher and many others. And it was followed the next afternoon by onetime photographer Mary McCartney’s “If These Walls Could Sing,” which looks at London’s Abbey Road recording studio through memories from, oh, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Roger Waters, Noah Gallagher and many others.

While “Squaring the Circle” comes from a photographer and video director who has made several other feature films in the past, including “Control” and “A Most Wanted Man,” “If...

Was ‘Taxman’ Inspired by ‘Batman’? And Other Burning ‘Revolver ’ Questions
Image
The Batman TV show, with Neil Hefti’s indelible “na-na-na-na-na-na-Batman” theme song, debuted in the U.S. in January 1966, hitting the U.K. in May. In April of that year, the Beatles started recording what would become the opening track of Revolver, George Harrison’s “Taxman,” which resembles the Batman theme when the band harmonizes on the title phrase. There were already three cover versions of the Batman theme released by April, including a hit version by the Marketts, so it’s entirely possible that the Beatles might have heard...

Why the Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ Sounds More Gloriously Weird Than Ever
Image
No Beatles album has a mystique quite like Revolver. John, Paul, George, and Ringo threw all their craziest ideas into their experimental 1966 masterpiece, turning Abbey Road Studios into a hotbed of madcap creative frenzy. Revolver was underrated for many years — especially in America, where the complete album didn’t even get released for 20 years. So it took time to get recognized as the Beatles’ boldest, brashest statement. But the shock of the new Special Deluxe Edition, with a treasure trove of unheard outtakes, is realizing there’s so much more...

The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ Box Set Pulls Back the Curtain on the Fab Four’s Shared Genius
Image
Some Fab Four folklore: In 1966, when Paul McCartney tried to impress Bob Dylan with an acetate of “Tomorrow Never Knows” — the sprawling, experimental acid freakout that concludes the Beatles’ seventh (and arguably best) LP, Revolver — Dylan quipped, “Oh, I get it: You don’t want to be cute anymore.”

In the liner notes for the weighty, new Super Deluxe edition of the album, the Cute One offers a different take: In the half a decade since they’d busted out of Liverpool’s bar-rock caverns, they’d simply become worldly.

Wait, John Lennon Singing ‘Yellow Submarine’? Hear Wild ‘Revolver’ Outtake
Image
The Beatles could pack an emotional punch like no other band. Their 1966 masterpiece Revolver is full of moments where John, Paul, George and Ringo reach right for the heart. But not “Yellow Submarine.” Until now. The world has always cherished this song as a cheerful kiddie novelty, something the lads whipped up fast for a laugh.

So it’s a real shock to hear John Lennon sing it, alone with his guitar, as a sad acoustic ballad. Taken from the new Super Deluxe Edition of Revolver, out October 28th, it...

Hear the Beatles Work Out ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ on First ‘Revolver’ Take
Image
When the Beatles started work on their masterpiece Revolver, in April 1966, they knew they were after the sound of the future. And they got there on the very first day of the sessions, with the wildly experimental buzz of “Tomorrow Never Knows (Take 1).” The psychedelic outtake was released on Friday and it’s a taste of the new Super Deluxe Edition of Revolver, which arrives on October 28. The new edition tells the story of how the Beatles took their gigantic creative leap into the unknown. As producer Giles Martin says,...

The Beatles’ Unheard ‘Revolver’: An Exclusive Preview of a Blockbuster Archival Release

In the summer of 1966, the Beatles dropped Revolver — an album so far ahead of its time that the world is still catching up with it. It’s the moptops mutating at warp speed, outgrowing all their former incarnations. Paul McCartney is exploring avant-garde art and music. John Lennon is reading The Tibetan Book of the Dead. George Harrison is studying sitar and Indian mysticism. Ringo Starr has installed a pub in his basement. They’re ready to shock the world — and themselves — with their masterpiece. The result: Revolver, routinely acclaimed...

‘If These Walls Could Sing’ Review: Mary McCartney Takes Her Own Crosswalk to Abbey Road
Image
It’s fair to say that Abbey Road Studios is the most documented recording facility in the world, but only if you count the crosswalk outside. Otherwise, the nine-bedroom mansion turned studio hasn’t really had its day in the cinematic sun, the way that more modest studios like L.A.’s Sound City and Alabama’s Muscle Shoals have. Making up for that with an A-lister-filled movie treatment is “If These Walls Could Sing,” the first feature-length documentary from Mary McCartney, who has a hell of a shared Rolodex to draw upon in gathering the firsthand rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes you expect and want in a film like this. She’s also savvy enough to know that the guy working in the back gluing irreplaceable mid-century microphones back together deserves a few seconds of screen time, too.

McCartney starts her film off by showing a baby picture of herself at the studio,...
