Al Sgro began his professional music career as a multi-instrumentalist touring the world with Gary Jules on the success of his seminal "Mad World" cover from the movie Donnie Darko. Following the tour, he interned with the movie's composer, Mike Andrews, and was given his first glimpse into the process of scoring for motion pictures.
During this time, he helped launch The Hotel Cafe, a renowned music venue in Hollywood, and opened his first studio, with partner Will Golden, where he began producing and touring with many of the venue's burgeoning artists including Joshua Radin, Joe Purdy, Meiko and Holly Conlan.
When tracks to his credit began being licensed for use in Film & Television, Al was gradually drawn again to composing, and in 2008 he was part of a team that scored six seasons of the ABC Studios comedy Cougar Town, starring Courteney Cox. Since then, he's composed for CBS's prime time reboot, Rush Hour, and recently scored YouTube Red's single-cam comedy, Me and My Grandma, with Rhea Perlman and YouTube star Eva Gutowski.
Al is also a founding member of the Son of Semele Ensemble, a non-profit theatre company based in Silverlake, Ca. With SOSE, he directed and scored two West Coast premiers of plays by avant-garde pioneer Richard Foreman-one of which (Film is Evil: Radio is Good) was featured on the cover of American Theatre Magazine.
A recipient of an ASCAP Film & TV Music award, a Latin Grammy, and two LA Theatre Ovation Award nominations, he's also co-owner of The Chalet Recording Studio in Culver City, Ca.
