Tons of A-list Hollywood names couldn’t save Expend4bles -- also known as The Expendables 4 -- from a dismal box office haul when it was released in 2023. Now, the fourth installment in the Expendables franchise featuring Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, and Dolph Lundgren is finding new life on streaming.
Per FlixPatrol, Expend4bles is in the No. 6 spot in Starz' Top 10 movies in the United States as of July 1, 2025. The movie is ahead of M3GAN, Imaginary, Don’t Breathe 2, and Never Let Go. In addition to Statham, Stallone, and Lundgren, Expend4bles also stars Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Andy Garcia and Randy Couture.
Expend4bles earned just over $51 million at the worldwide box office, which was about half of its reported $100 million budget. The movie also garnered the most Golden Raspberry Awards nods of any film in 2023. It was nominated for seven “Razzies” that year, including Worst Picture, Worst Supporting Actor for Stallone,...

Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s Distant (2024) joins the ranks of schlocky outer-space dramas that are as generic, predictable, trope-y as it gets. Random creatures are mounted as assailants. They are predators and that throughline is taken to supply the narrative with blasts of action and heightened chase sequences. The drama is dialled up, moments of stillness and companionship are shattered by the invasion of massive threats. Surprise at the threat is followed by attempts to outdo the stalking monster. Life, endangered as it is, becomes doubly imperilled. Escape is evasive. Hope seems forsaken, yet the two characters persist.
The lesson here is solidarity and allyship, a chance connection that rips out peril. Hope shines brighter in this companionship, despite physical separateness. The emotional need for anchorage trumps obstacles, looming danger. Backstories peep out in scattered mini-flashbacks. Trauma and loss are entrenched deep. Nevertheless, people fight back, latching onto whatever is available.

With tarot readers just a few swipes away on TikTok and the uptick of interest in astrology over the last several decades, the idea of a horror feature based on the practice was always right around the corner. Earlier this year, a story finally made its way to the big screen with Spenser Cohen and Anna Halbergs co-directorial debut, Tarot. Based on Nicholas Adams 1992 novel, Horrorscope, the movie centers on a group of college friends who have a little fun one night with a Tarot deck. Soon theyll find they shouldve stuck to the more classic Kings Cup or any other favorite card-based drinking game as the deck seemingly comes to life and picks them off one after the other with the survivors scrambling to put an end to the madness before fate comes for them.

Adapted from Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel, the much better titled Horrorscope, Tarot is the feature directorial debut from writers/directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. The story opens at a rented mansion inhabited by a group of college students celebrating a birthday, although tensions are high due to a recent break-up within the group. When they run out of beer, the group search the mansion for hidden alcohol only to discover strange tarot cards within the basement.
Despite saying that it is a sacred rule of Tarot to not use someone else’s deck, Hayley (Harriet Slater) agrees to use the strange deck to read everyone else’s horoscopes. One by one, their horoscopes come true as they meet their ends, with it becoming clear that the group are...

Following a well-worn formula and offering a milieu of genre thrills, Tarot can be described as the perfect slumber party flick that doesn't take itself too seriously. Each death in this astrological slasher is wildly absurd, gruesomely creative, and pleasantly theatrical, but not necessarily outright terrifying. Though some do come close, like Paige's (Avantika Vandanapu) stint in the Magician's box, or the glimpses of the Hangman on the bridge. One particular scene, however, undeniably surpasses the others in terms of genuinely scaring us, as it creeps up on us unawares. It is when Jacob Batalon's Paxton hops into an elevator and sees his grotesque fortune unfold that we are confronted with real terror in Tarot. Directors Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen masterfully executed the jarring and horrifying atmosphere in this scene, enhanced by the fear-stricken performance by Batalon and an unforgettable Fool.

The story revolves around a group of friends who find an old tarot deck and decide to do personal readings based on both the tarot cards and their astrology signs. The following day, things take a turn for the worse when each reading starts coming true.
As expected from the supernatural sub-genre of horror, most of the main characters get picked off one by one. This is an expected outcome for the classic group of friends who get cursed or haunted set-up. Until "Longlegs" became the biggest box office surprise of the year, things weren't looking all that great for horror in 2024. A usually reliable genre was seemingly losing some of its appeal, as no one single film was able to repeat the breakout success of 2023's "Talk To Me" or "Skinamarink." Sydney Sweeney's dour nun horror pic "Immaculate" failed to wow critics and the generic yet enjoyable "Night Swim" couldn't quite become the breakout hit Universal were surely hoping for. Neither of these films were out and out financial failures, but it's actually quite difficult to lose a ton of money when your budgets are around the to $9-15 million mark.
Of course, the aforementioned "LongLegs" has proven that horror can still very much succeed at the box office, especially if you deploy one of the best marketing campaigns of recent years to support it. Which, as it happens, is...

Fate has finally dealt Tarot a winning hand with audiences, at least on streaming. The quite disappointing horror film, which stars Spider-Man alum Jacob Batalon, is currently trending at No. 3 on Netflix following its online debut on Thursday, August 1. Directors Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohens attempt at scaring up audiences theatrically resulted in mixed results. First, its important to note that Tarot did well financially while playing in cinemas.
With a budget of only $8 million, Tarot made $18.8 million domestically (per Box Office Mojo), but the macabre movie did even better business overseas. Internationally, the Batalon-led flick made an additional $30.3 million. And Tarot did particularly well in both Spain ($2.4 million) and France ($2.2 million) en route to a worldwide total of $49.1 million. Thats over six times its production budget definitely a win.

Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.
Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.
Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

It has not been a particularly great year for horror movies theatrically. 2024 has been, to put it mildly, pretty rough at the box office overall, with the summer season suffering one disappointment after another. Smaller movies like "In a Violent Nature" are finding success right now, but Hollywood has yet to have a true horror movie breakout hit this year. However, amidst the rubble there is a pretty impressive success story in the form of "Tarot."
Released by Sony on May 3 right alongside Universal's splashy blockbuster "The Fall Guy" to kick off the summer season, "Tarot" opened to an unassuming $6.5 million, placing number four on the charts that weekend. That's not exactly a blockbuster debut, to put it lightly. But the studio was thrifty with this one, making it for just $8.5 million. Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tarot.
Tarot is one of the oldest and most popular methods of divination. A form of cartomancy, it’s the practice of connecting with ancestors, spirit guides, or hidden aspects of the self by drawing cards and interpreting their hidden meanings. British occultist Pamela Colman Smith illustrated the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith deck which remains the standard representation of each card and forms the basis of most tarot analysis today. But there are endless interpretations of the 78-card structure. Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s Tarot imagines a similar deck with the power to bring a reading’s final outcome to bloody life. Designed by a witch who infused the deck with her dying blood, this grisly stack contains malevolent variations of tarot’s most frightening faces.

Big-budgeted films with a stellar cast are normally expected to perform better at the box office than low-budgeted films. However, the 2024 box office so far has seen more major flops, big-budget films failing to make it to the breakeven point, and low-budgeted movies garnering millions across the world. And so it was for actors like Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling, who despite their fanfare and talent, failed to woo the audiences with their feats.

While Henry Cavill so far has recorded two flops this year (Argylle & The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) despite some pretty astounding collaborations, last year’s box-office dominating stars Gosling and Emily Blunt failed to live up to expectations with their action-packed romantic comedy, The Fall Guy.

Tarot is now available on VOD through Amazon and Vudu for $9.99 to rent or $14.99 to buy. Despite negative reviews, Tarot earned $37.2 million globally, surpassing its $8.25 million budget. Tarot succeeded at the box office in a year where horror films struggled, even outselling movies with more prominent casts.
Tarot has now made its way over to VOD. A 2024 horror film, Tarots plot turns harmless fortune-telling cards into something far more sinister when a friend group goes against the most fundamental rule of Tarot card reading, inadvertently releasing an evil into the world that they must fight to stop or risk a fatal fate. Tarot is co-directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg and features a leading cast including Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Jacob Batalon, Avantika, Humberly Gonzlez, Wolfgang Novogratz, Larsen Thompson, and Olwen Fourre. It was released in theaters on May 3.

Look, far be it from me to tell a young, diverse, and predominantly non-male group of horror-movie protagonists what to do. But if I were ever in a situation that involved dabbling with the supernatural in highly creepy settings while also breaking long-established rules involved with the aforementioned dabbling, I would simply not do that. Of course, there wouldn't be a movie for us to talk about here in that hypothetical, but that ain't my problem!
For better or worse (you can probably guess which one it is), nobody involved with the production of "Tarot" bothered to listen to my advice. For this group of college kids who committed the faux pas of all faux pas by messing with a tarot deck that wasn't theirs to begin with, the end result was ... pretty messy, to put it mildly.

Henderson recently explained to Bloody Disgusting, “I couched it as doing a fun slumber party horror movie, like a Thirteen Ghosts kind of thing, and having the chance to do a whole bevy of different monsters in one film really excited me a lot.”

Hollywood constantly brings a new generation of stars to the horror genre in an effort to draw in younger viewers and provide an abundance of thrills. One example of this is Tarot, the latest horror film from Sony Pictures that stars a number of well-known up-and-coming actors. The cast features Jacob Batalon from Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avantika Vandanapu, the breakout cast member from Mean Girls.
Well, Tarot has caused quite a stir in the horror community as it heads to digital platforms much sooner than expected. Despite earning over 4 times its budget of $8 million, many horror fans are feeling slighted by the decision to release the film online so quickly.

Spider-Man franchise star Jacob Batalon appears in a much darker movie with his role in the new horror film Tarot. It's not your average horror movie, as the slasher features a unique storyline.
In Tarot, a group of friends are plagued with one after another dying mysteriously in ways that are reminiscent of their fortunes from a tarot card reading. Speaking about the film with Cbr's Kevin Polowy in a new interview, Batalon addressed how the interesting plot was what drew him to get involved. The actor commented on how there's been an abundance of more traditional horror movies lately, and this opened the door for something like Tarot to stand out in a big way.

The new horror movie Tarot did not have the warmest reception with critics upon release, to say the least. At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a low approval rating of 21 percent, but that doesn't mean the horror flick was not a success.
Via The Numbers, Tarot will be rounding out the weekend with $3.4 million earned at the domestic box office, landing in the No. 4 spot with its second weekend in theaters. That brings the film up to more than $12 earned domestically, and counting in $8.2 million from overseas ticket sales, Tarot has surpassed $20.2 million worldwide. Given the low budget of the film, which was made for around $8 million, Tarot can be seen as a big financial success by earning so much more in less than two weeks in theaters.

Tarot surprises with financial success, earning $20 million on an $8 million budget in just 10 days. Despite lukewarm reviews, Tarot delivers a mix of humor and horror, with standout performance by Jacob Batalon. Batalon's role injects needed charisma, making the film a more fun experience for viewers of all ages.
Tarot has emerged as an unexpected box office success, despite a wave of critical disapproval. The new horror film has nearly tripled its production budget in a mere ten days.
With a modest budget of $8 million, Tarot has stunned industry observers by pulling in a whopping $20 million globally, as reported by Variety. This includes a projected $3.4 million from the domestic market by the end of its second weekend, combined with substantial international earnings. It is, generally speaking, ill-advised to go into creepy basements in rented mansions. It is also not a good idea to play with the hand-painted, sinister tarot cards found in the aforementioned basement. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what the group of college pals in Tarot do.
Based on the 1992 YA novel Horrorscope, co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s debut feature is horror-by-numbers, with characters that scarcely deserve (or get) a name. Instead, they are introduced through their horoscope-assigned personalities, when they convince resident astrology girl Haley to read their tarot. Almost immediately, the malevolent force attached to the tarot cards starts picking them off, matching their deaths to the specific tarot cards they were dealt.

The stars have aligned for Jacob Batalon. The Spider-Man and Reginald the Vampire actor garnered good reviews for his role as funny guy Paxton in the trippy Sony horror thriller Tarot, which hit theaters last week. Now, theres buzz about Season 2 of Reginald the Vampire, which drops May 8 on Syfy. Based on the Fat Vampire books, the hit series centers around a newbie young vampire who struggles to find his groove in a world of traditionally beautiful vampires. Batalon is also an executive producer on the series.
In this exclusive MovieWeb interview, the actor opens up about taking on Tarot, the upcoming season of Reginald the Vampire, possibly diving into another Spider-Man outing, the moment he seriously considered becoming an actor, and much more. We even go so far as to pull a few tarot cards for Batalon for a mini-reading. Read on or watch the video interview.

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Filmmakers often say that they have to personalize their work. After all, they painstakingly devote at least two years of their lives to bring a film to fruition, but in the case of Tarot co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, they turned what would normally be a genre exercise into something from the heart.
Tarot — which serves as the writer-directors’ feature directorial debut — is a supernatural horror film involving a group of college friends who, during a weekend getaway, crack open a cursed deck of tarot cards to learn their ominous horoscopes. The tarot card reading is reluctantly led by Harriet Slater’s Haley, who, like Halberg, is a Minnesota native, and shortly after the friend group returns to their Boston-area university, all hell breaks loose as each individual reading comes true in lethal fashion.

The latest in a string of studio horror movies to under-perform at the box office, Sonys Tarot opened to soft numbers this past weekend. Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Tarot finished fourth on the domestic box office chart, behind the summers first tent-pole, The Fall Guy, and a 25-year-old film that most people dont even like. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace handily out-performed Tarot despite playing in less than half the number of domestic theaters, which isnt something that Sony would be pleased about. To make matters worse, the films overseas performance was just as underwhelming.

A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.

If you’ve ever fumbled through a dusty old deck of tarot cards, hoping they’d reveal something about your future, Tarot (2024) might just make you think twice before you shuffle again. This horror flick, helmed by first-timers Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, deals a hand that’s both terrifying and delightfully over-the-top. The film taps into the old-school charm of supernatural slashers, where a group of friends find themselves in a deadly game of cosmic consequences.

The horror movie Tarot doesn't understand the nature of its subject and has forgettable characters, but the engaging performance from Jacob Batalon adds humor and relatability. The jump scares are surprisingly effective thanks to good editing, and the concept of the tarot cards as horror characters is cool. The film lacks true horror intensity thanks to its PG-13 rating, and it relies on the usual horror tropes.
A box office joyride may not be in the cards for Tarot. The new horror film from co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg suffers from an overuse of horror tropes and disposable characters. And there arent that many characters in the film. Its saving grace is Jacob Batalon, an actor who is clearly having a moment. Despite an 8% Rotten Tomatoes score, Tarot is projected to take No. 4 in its opening weekend with a domestic gross of $6.25 million. This total has already nearly recouped the horror movie's $8 million budget. It shouldn't be difficult for the movie to hit its break-even point, though it may not make a huge profit.
Tarot is on its way to recouping its budget despite only earning an 8% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The new horror movie, which was written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, is based on the 1992 Nicholas Adams novel Horrorscope and follows a group of friends trying to break a deadly curse that they accidentally unleashed from a deck of tarot cards. The Fall Guy is kicking off summer movie season with a No. 1 debut at the box office this weekend, but it’s coming in below initial tracking. After earning $10.4 million on Friday, the feature is now projected to open to $28 million for the weekend, down from earlier tracking that had it in the $30-$35 million range.
The film earned an A- CinemaScore from audiences, so it’s possible word of mouth could help the movie make up ground in the coming weeks. The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million when accounting for incentives for shooting in Australia. Overseas, it is projected to take in another $25.8 million over the weekend, which would bring its global haul to $65.4 million. (It already opened in some markets last week.)
David Leitch, the stuntman who over the past decade has become an in-demand director, is behind the project. Ryan Gosling...

Tarot features a group of college friends fighting against fateful tarot card predictions before time runs out. Some inventive kills are present in Tarot, but the scares wear thin due to a lack of surprises and easily predictable scares. Despite some clever moments and a solidly clever ending, Tarot falls flat due to thin character development, dull plot, and lack of major scares.
At first glance, the premise for the new horror film Tarot, from directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, reads like a combination of tropes derived from other movies in the genre. A group of friends indulge in a familiar game/ritual and soon find themselves getting picked off one by one, unable to avoid their fate (Final Destination). Of course, when it comes to horror, sometimes originality isn't necessary; what's key are the scares, and how everything unfolds. Unfortunately, Tarot falls flat in the former category, and the latter isn't particularly engaging.

Before he returns to the role of Spider-Man’s best friend, “Guy in the Chair” and emergency sorcerer, Jacob Batalon is deepening his relationship with Sony Pictures. Today, Batalon is back on the big screen in the studio’s supernatural horror film, Tarot. Written and directed by Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen, Tarot chronicles seven college friends whose individual tarot card readings come to life in deadly fashion. Batalon plays Paxton, the impulsive life of the party within his friend group.
Tarot partially utilizes Batalon as comic relief, a role that he’s perfected since breaking out in Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but the film also allowed him to play afraid, something young actors often cite as being the most difficult emotion to play given the mechanics of a film set.

If we're comparing failed Final Destination rehashes, Tarot is up there with the worst. Writers and directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg aim for PG-13 sleepover-branded chills in Tarot, but sell the entire experience abysmally short. Their story about a cursed tarot deck is ludicrously underwritten and dopey, discarding established in-universe rationale mere minutes after cement dries. It's a movie that sequences events like they're mistakenly out of order, with Cohen and Halberg treating the audience like they’ve never seen a horror movie before — or maybe they’re praying we haven’t
In the film, stereotypical college students rent the equivalent of Scrooge McDuck's mansion on Airbnb for one of their birthdays. When the last beer can pops open, partiers panic and search the premises for hidden alcohol, which leads them into a musty once-locked basement filled with astrological artifacts — one being a hand-drawn deck of tarot cards in an engraved container.

A deck full of terror awaits in the new Screen Gems horror movie Tarot, which features a variety of new supernatural entities designed by concept artist Trevor Henderson.
Tarot, in theaters now, is written and directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg, very loosely based on a novel by Nicholas Adams.
The plot sees a group of friends unleashing a curse when they decide to play with a mysterious box of tarot cards. One by one, they come face to face with their fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.
Trevor Henderson designed the creature concept art, which was transformed into the cursed tarot deck by artist Richard Wells.
