Michael Fassbender has not appeared in a film since 2019, and his return to the screen in David Fincher's The Killer is just the kind of nuanced performance the actor needed at this time in his career. However, the film in which his slick performance resides contains a script too simplistic to properly engage. The characters are never fully developed, feeling like caricatures. This causes the stakes to be significantly lowered because the audience is not connected to anything occurring in the film. However, a solid lead performance and stylish filmmaking push The Killer's watchability.
In The Killer, Fassbender is the title character, a cold and calculated assassin who treats his profession like any other job. He's great at it, and in the first 20 minutes of the film, the viewer is presented with the unnamed killer-for-hire preparing his next assignment. He's holed up in what appears to be an abandoned building in Paris,...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Killer.
The Killer has a unique soundtrack featuring mostly songs by the British indie rock band The Smiths, which are used by the protagonist to help calm his heart rate during assassination attempts. The film marks the first collaboration between director David Fincher and actor Michael Fassbender, who delivers a stoic and mysterious performance as the highly-trained hitman known as The Killer. In addition to The Smiths songs, the film is also scored by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who have previously worked with Fincher on other films. The soundtrack can be found on popular streaming platforms and Netflix has an official playlist.

Like the “Jeanne Dielman” of assassin movies, “The Killer” centers on how the self-started glitches in one character’s routine cause their carefully ordered world to fall slowly off its axis. David Fincher’s sleek if small genre exercise plants us into the orbital sockets of an unnamed killer-for-hire, played by Michael Fassbender, whose self-deceptions catch up to him amid a contract job gone just about an inch wrong in Paris.
There are few surprises in this straight-line thriller, well-executed within a millimeter of its life as ever by the “Gone Girl” and “Social Network” director. Here, the perfectionist, you-might-say-control-freak director punches up a nimbly sketched screenplay by “Seven” scribe Andrew Kevin Walker that evokes no sympathy for its protagonist,...

Tabloid reports have claimed that The Smiths are considering reuniting for the Coachella music festival. The 1980s indie band, which featured Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, have been offered £2.8 million by organisers, according to The Sun. Morrissey has repeatedly ruled out the idea of reforming the group during interviews, once claiming: "I'd rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths - and that's saying something coming from a vegetarian." Rifts between the group developed further in 1996 when Joyce successfully sued Marr and Morrissey for unpaid royalties. (more)...
