Brennan Lee Mulligan on ‘Dimension 20: Titan Takedown’ and Why Learning About WWE Was Like ‘Dante’s Inferno’
Image
Brennan Lee Mulligan has shown “Dimension 20” viewers countless new worlds as the dungeon master of Dropout’s tabletop actual play series, but now he’s stepping into a new realm: professional wrestling.

The latest season of “Dimension 20,” “Titan Takedown,” is a four-episode side quest that swaps Mulligan’s usual crew of comics and D&d aficionados for a quartet of WWE wrestlers: Bayley, Chelsea Green, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods/Austin Creed.

Though Dungeons & Dragons and pro-wrestling may seem like two different universes, Mulligan says the idea for a wrestling season of “Dimension 20” has been brewing for some time. “These wrestlers have tons of fans among the Dropout staff and the ‘Dimension 20’ cast and crew,” he told Variety.

“We’d had Austin [Creed] on ‘Um, Actually’ and word got to me that he loved playing D&d, so there was immediately a connection there. I was like ‘Oh,...

8 Characters Who Still Need To Return Before Lone Star Ends
Image
9-1-1: Lone Star season 5 has had some of the best storylines of the show's five-year run, but there are still several characters who need to return to the 9-1-1 spinoff before the show officially ends. 9-1-1: Lone Star ended its midseason finale with a satisfying closure to Carlos' father's murder investigation, which had been consuming Carlos for the entirety of season 5. Owen also turned down his offer to become the Fire Chief of NYC after discovering his replacement, Judd, was not ready to take over. Meanwhile, Tommy started her cancer treatment after a devastating diagnosis.

With only three episodes left in 9-1-1: Lone Star season 5, there is still a lot that could happen. The 9-1-1: Lone Star finale trailer revealed that an asteroid is set to impact Austin, leading to apocalyptic emergencies in the already intense show. The dramatic closing arc of the show...

Image
Exclusive: With the Mohamed Al Fayed exposé generating headlines this week, the disgraced business mogul’s portrayal as a mild-mannered matchmaker in The Crown, which landed Salim Daw a BAFTA nomination, has been in the spotlight.

But the EP behind the BBC’s Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods has said he is “reluctant to point a finger” at The Crown over choosing to portray him in this way, positing that The Crown is “a drama, not a current affairs program” – a theme that has repeatedly come up with regard Netflix’s now-ended smash royal series.

More than 20 women have accused Al Fayed – who died last year – of sexual assault via the BBC exposé, five of whom say he raped them. In the doc, a number of his victims say that they were emboldened to speak out after watching The Crown and growing angry at how Al Fayed was portrayed.

‘Civil War,’ ‘The Fall Guy,’ and J.Lo Take #1 Spots in Home Viewing
Image
Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.

Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.

“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Willingness to Get Wet, Conor McGregor’s Velvet Gloves, and Why the Stunts of ‘Road House’ Work
Image
There’s a moment in “Road House,” at a low point for Jake Gyllenhaal’s haunted ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer Dalton, where he’s been slapped around by crazed mob enforcer (Conor McGregor) and is ready to give up and leave. McGregor watches him go with a bloodthirsty grin (plus a lot of actual blood) on his face and says, “There’s something wrong with you. Me too.”

It’s a threat, a nod of respect, and a bit of a thesis for how the film’s action works. There’s something wrong (in the best way) with everyone in “Road House,” from the stars to the stunt team to director Doug Limon and cinematographer Henry Braham, who designed his own handheld gimbal that looks like a robotic arm and responds like a Steadicam’s stabilizers but is able to be thrown around a speedboat (presumably along with the...

15 Fantastic Movies That Are Based On Banned Books
Image
Ever since the printing press was invented, there's been no shortage of instances of books being banned. The reasons for these bans run the gamut from the religious to the political to the moral. Because the standards of decency have changed so much over the centuries, books that were once considered obscene are now socially acceptable, and sometimes, it's the other way around.

While the general intent of banning a book is to prevent readers from engaging with it, it often has the opposite effect. Labeling a book "forbidden" can bring more attention to it. This "Streisand Effect" makes a lot of sense. When the powers that be condemn a piece of media, this only increases the audience's curiosity about why it's so controversial. Not only have bans led to books becoming more popular, but it has also led to them getting the big screen treatment. Hollywood has rarely shied away from capitalizing on controversy,...

Image
Exclusive: Italian director Mario Martone, who has been on the festival and awards circuit over the past year with Oscar submission and Cannes title Nostalgia, is at the Berlinale with his passion project Somebody Down There Likes Me.

Selected for the Berlinale Specials sidebar, the documentary plays at a sold-out screening on Saturday, on the eve of what would have been the actor’s 70th birthday on February 19. Deadline can reveal a trailer.

Martone says he wants to shed light on the popular actor who he believes has never been properly celebrated.

“Massimo has always remained alive in the collective consciousness because he was a great actor and a great artist,” says the director.

Image
Italian auteur Mario Martone, who was recently in Cannes with “Nostalgia,” is set to direct a high-profile doc about the late Massimo Troisi, one of Italy’s most beloved comic actors who starred in the Oscar-winning film “Il Postino.”

Troisi, who played the simple postman who rides his bicycle on the sandy terrain of an Italian island to deliver mail to his sole client, the Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, died tragically of congenital heart failure at age 41 in June 1994, the day after “Il Postino” finished shooting at Rome’s Cinecittà studios.

Hellbound Hearts (Book Review)
It’s hard to believe that Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart was published more than 20 years ago. The novella first appeared in 1986’s Night Visions collection, and was reissued later on as a standalone book. If you haven’t read The Hellbound Heart or seen Hellraiser, the Barker-scripted-and-directed movie it inspired, then you probably shouldn’t be reading Pocket Books’ recently published Hellbound Hearts.

Edited by Paul Kane and Marie O’Regan, this anthology includes 21 tales inspired by Barker’s hellraising universe. So if you don’t know what a Cenobite is, have never heard of the Lemarchand Configuration and think Pinhead is one of the actors in Tod Browning’s Freaks, you should check out the source material and film before opening up this tome. However, if you’re familiar with and a fan of Barker’s work, then let’s open up this Box, I mean book,...
