Action Western 'The Unholy Trinity' Fails To Impress Critics on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The new action western starring Pierce Brosnan and Samuel L. Jackson hit theaters this week, promising a return-to-form for a genre that has churned out Yellowstone-lite projects over the past few years. However, it appears that critics have not been impressed with the gun-toting effort. Brosnan and Jackson combine for a formidable on-screen duo in the revenge tale, but it is their endless charm and charisma could not keep the new western outside of critics' line of sight.

Now playing in select theaters, The Unholy Trinity is an old-fashioned western film about a young man seeking revenge for the wrongful execution of his father. However, despite leaning on the period elements of the genre, it appears it did not wow critics. The film currently has a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 14 reviews. Most critics felt underwhelmed by the film's "uninspired action," while others still found some positives about the...

Image
Samuel L. Jackson has a proposal for a saloon full of owlhoots in a new Collider-exclusive sneak peek from The Unholy Trinity. However, they may not be too interested in listening. The Western thriller also stars Pierce Brosnan and will be released by Roadside Attractions on June 13. In our sneak peek, Jackson plays the mysterious man known only as St. Christopher; as only Jackson can, he strolls into a dusty saloon and orders a whiskey. There, he notes that one of his fellow customers is looking considerably worse for wear...and when her brother calls him out on it, St. Christopher wonders why the man isn't busy cutting the throat of the man who roughed up his sister.

After theatrically downing his drink, he addresses the rest of the bar's patrons. The bar doesn't seem particularly friendly to outsiders, and especially not to those of St. Christopher's race, and...

Vincent Cassel at an event for Trance (2013)
Damaged review – Samuel L Jackson comes to Edinburgh in crime thriller
Vincent Cassel at an event for Trance (2013)
Vincent Cassel and Gianni Capaldi complete an improbable trio on the hunt for a serial killer in this absurd police procedural – one for the so-bad-it’s-good genre

Here is what appears to be an authentic so-bad-it’s-good crime thriller, set on the mean streets of Edinburgh and starring the improbable trio of Gianni Capaldi (Blood of Redemption), Samuel L Jackson (Pulp Fiction) and Vincent Cassel (L’Élève). If you’ve ever wondered what a British police procedural television show inexplicably starring this combo of actors would feel like – and why wouldn’t you? – this is the movie for you.

As is traditional, matters begin with a pre-titles cold open featuring a grisly murder: a woman answers the door of her Edinburgh flat to a caped and hooded maniac who proceeds to dismember her. “Why do serial killers always gotta bring this cult shit into it?” Jackson’s character laments. But...

Damaged Review: Macabre Serial Killer Movie Lowers Iq Points
Image
Samuel L. Jackson leads a venerated European cast off a cliff in an absurd, mindless, and macabre serial killer thriller. Damaged strains credulity from the start and proceeds to lower Iq points with each passing frame. The seemingly straightforward plot of an American detective helping Scottish police find a Satanic murderer has numerous critical flaws. The biggest problem, and central to the supposed mystery, is the competence of the investigators. A melodramatic subplot further muddies these dreadful waters. Every psychotic murderer would be running loose like rabbits with these guys on the case.

Damaged opens in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a young woman (Nicolette McKeown) leaving her synagogue after worship. She doesn't see a mysterious man in a raincoat following from a distance. The shrouded figure knocks on her door with malicious intent. She foolishly opens to a frenzy of stabbing. The killer removes a hacksaw from a bag to begin his grisly work.

‘Damaged’ Review: Not Even Samuel L. Jackson and Dramatic Scottish Setting Can Freshen Up Stale Serial Killer Flick
Image
Just once, it would be refreshing to see a serial killer movie in which the detectives investigating a series of horrific murders were actually normal, well-adjusted individuals. The kind of cops who leave their work at the office, go home to their families, and drink only the occasional beer or glass of wine at dinner. The ones, in other words, who don’t live up to the title of the new thriller featuring a top-billed Samuel L. Jackson but in which the real leading player is Gianni Capaldi, who also co-scripted.

That’s definitely not the case with Damaged, a routine cop movie mainly distinguished by its extensive Scottish locations. Jackson plays Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective still haunted by a bunch of killings years earlier in which one of the victims was his own girlfriend. When a similar series of murders — in which the victims’ bodies are dismembered and...

Damaged Review
Image
Plot: Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective, travels to Scotland to link up with Scottish Det. Boyd, following the resurgence of a serial killer whose crimes match an unsolved case that he looked into 5 years previous in Chicago.

Review: Ever since David Fincher’s Se7en, I’ve been a fan of the simple premise of a detective hunting down a serial killer. This game of cat and mouse allows for just the right amount of mystery and intrigue that will keep you guessing until the end. I’d argue the big reveal at the end is nearly as synonymous with crime thrillers as cops and criminals. If there’s one thing a good mystery needs, it’s something unexpected. And Damaged certainly has that.

The story follows Detective Lawson (Samuel L. Jackson) as he travels to Scotland to help with a case. Someone is recreating the murders that Lawson investigated back in Chicago five years prior,...

‘Damaged’ Review
Image
Stars: Samuel L. Jackson, Gianni Capaldi, Laura Haddock, Brian McCardie, Vincent Cassel | Written by Paul Aniello, Koji Steven Sakai, Gianni Capaldi | Directed by Terry McDonough

Five years ago, a serial killer terrorized Chicago. Detective Dan Lawson was assigned to the case but couldn’t bring the killer to justice. It left him a badly damaged man, drinking on the job and obsessed with revenge. Doubly so because one of the victims was his own girlfriend whom he discovered, her head and limbs in the shape of a cross, her torso missing.

In Edinburgh, Detective Glen Boyd finds himself investigating a murder that looks to be the work of the same person. He reaches out to the Chicago Pd, who are only too happy to put Lawson on the next flight to Scotland. Fortunately, there weren’t any motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.

Things, of course, don’t go well.

King of Killers Review | Frank Grillo Slaughters the Competition
Image
A ruthless puppet master lures a grieving hit man into a deadly competition of assassins. King of Killers, adapted by Kevin Grevioux from his Darkstorm Comics graphic novel, is a swift and bloody actioner that goes in a surprisingly unexpected direction. Arteries spurt as limbs are sliced off like ham at the deli counter. Brutal beatdowns and stylized gunplay are followed with frenzied stabbing that would make Ghostface jealous. The film is a check your brain at the door adrenaline rush of violence. Frank Grillo, a Hollywood stalwart and one of my favorite actors, steals the show with a deliciously exaggerated performance.

Marcus Garan (Alain Moussi) strains as his mangled face is about to be driven through a wall spike. The film then cuts to a wintry scene a year earlier. A disguised Marcus casually walks into a bar. He observes a shady group of men heading towards the bathroom.

With the possible exception of rock stars and professional athletes, hitmen have the worst record for staying retired. And the central character of King of Killers is certainly no exception.

Marcus Goran was one of the best killers in the business until his boss Robert Xane calls needing him to do a job on his anniversary. We see him trying to pull the job off intercut with his wife getting ready to go out later thinking he’s working late at the office. Then she gets a text, allegedly from him telling her to meet her at the club where he’s stalking his target.

By the end of the night his target is dead, and so is his wife. Now he’s retired and a single...

‘A Day to Die’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Bruce Willis, Kevin Dillon, Frank Grillo, Leon, Brooke Butler, Gianni Capaldi | Written by Rab Berry, Scott Mallace | Directed by Wes Miller

Since this is a day ending in “Y” that means it’s time for another Bruce Willis movie to arrive, this time it’s A Day to Die. I may have used that line before, but he’s putting out so many films I’m running out of ways to introduce them.

A Day to Die opens in the middle of a hostage situation. A special security team that includes Connor and Mason is called in to deal with a hostage situation at a school that involves what appears to be some well-armed militia types. It all goes very badly due to the police somehow not noticing several guys with RPGs on nearby rooftops. It also didn’t help that the attackers had a landmine that not only...

Bruce Willis, Kevin Dillon, and Frank Grillo in A Day to Die (2022)
Bruce Willis in Another Pointless Action Thriller 'A Day to Die' Trailer
Bruce Willis, Kevin Dillon, and Frank Grillo in A Day to Die (2022)
"We got the element of surprise... and we got violence." Vertical has released an official trailer for a generic action thriller titled A Day to Die, yet another boring new Bruce Willis movie to ignore. Even the title is generic and forgettable. After killing a drug syndicate member while protecting a parolee, Connor Connolly has one day to pay two million dollars in reparations he doesn't have to Tyrone Pettis. He is forced to ask his old military ops crew, led by Brice Mason, to come together and somehow get two million dollars before Connor loses everyone he loves. Bruce Willis co-stars with Kevin Dillon, Frank Grillo, Leon, Gianni Capaldi, Johnny Messner, Vernon Davis, and Brooke Butler. Not a bad cast, but nah... These dime-a-dozen Bruce Willis movies are as bad as they've ever been, and I really hope no one is wasting their money on them. Just stay away.

Mickey Rourke and Michael Jai White in Le commando (2022)
Michael Jai White & Mickey Rourke in Action Film 'The Commando'
Mickey Rourke and Michael Jai White in Le commando (2022)
"Don't worry, I'm built for this." Saban Films has unveiled the official trailer for action crime thriller The Commando, another forgettable formulaic action feature to ignore because all of these films are the same nowadays. A DEA agent with Ptsd returns home after a botched mission and must now protect his family from a home invasion after a recently freed convict and his henchmen come back for their stash of millions hidden inside the agent's home. "Stakes are high and lives are at risk in this head-to-head battle as the agent stops at nothing to protect his family against the money-hungry criminals." Why do they always recycle the same "protect your home because they want the money" plot over and over? The Commando stars Mickey Rourke and Michael Jai White, with Jeff Fahey, Brendan Fehr, John Enos III, Donald Cerrone, and Gianni Capaldi. At least the action doesn't look so bad in this film.

‘Among the Shadows’ Review
Lindsay Lohan
Stars: Lindsay Lohan, Charlotte Beckett, Gianni Capaldi, Dominik Madani, Reynald Biales, Barry Jay Minoff | Written by Mark Morgan | Directed by Tiago Mesquita

There is surely a market for an Underworld B-movie knock off, even a badly made one…. Is what I thought before I saw Among the Shadows. The film mashes the Underworld vampires and werewolves conflict idea with some hardboiled detective nonsense – the fit and healthy young lady is actually a grizzled old, alchy gumshoe.. with narration, whiskey, the whole thing.

We are in the near future, and in the “United States of Europe” thanks to Brexit, apparently. Kicking off, with quite the prankster uncle Harry calling his young, attractive niece to tell her he had been shot… her reaction implies she gets a lot of calls like this from him (possibly at 3am with uncle Harry breathing heavily and crying loudly).

The mugging of poor uncle Harry – who...

Robert the Bruce Review – Eiff 2019
A loose continuation of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, with Angus Macfadyen reprising his titular role as Robert the Bruce, Richard Gray’s spin-off takes place after the death of William Wallace but before the Battle of Bannockburn — both depicted in the 1995 classic. Reeling from a string of defeats, Robert the Bruce disbands his loyal troops only to find himself on the run from the traitors among them, tempted by the price on his head. Enter Morag (Anna Hutchinson), a kindly widow whose husband gave his life for The Bruce’s cause; her young son Scot (Gabriel Bateman) encounters the injured king while hunting deer with his sister (Talitha Bateman) and cousin (Brandon Lessard), and together the family of crofters resolves to nurse him back to health, despite the threat posed by Morag’s bounty-hunting brother-in-law (Gianni Capaldi).

Considering the film was co-written by Macfadyen, for whom Robert the Bruce has long been a passion project,...

Lindsay Lohan Battles Werewolves in Trailer For a New Film Called Among The Shadows
Lindsay Lohan is back and this time she’s battling werewolves! The first trailer has been released for her latest film project, Among the Shadows. As you might expect, the movie is campy, cheap, and terrible looking. But, I know you’re all curious to see what a Lindsay Lohan werewolf movie looks like, so I thought I’d share it!

Kristy Wolfe (Charlotte Beckett) is a Brussels private eye descended from werewolves who must go to work when her uncle Harry Goldtsone is murdered in a politically-motivated attack. Patricia Sherman (Lindsay Lohan), the wife of European Federation President Richard Sherman, hires Wolfe to investigate Goldstone’s killing, as he was her husband’s campaign manager. Wolfe finds bodies falling all over city and must use her innate instincts to unravel the case and stay alive long enough unmask the conspiracy.”

It’s interesting to see where Lohan’s career has gone.

Among the Shadows Trailer Teams Lindsay Lohan with a Werewolf Detective
Momentum Pictures has released the long-awaited Among the Shadows trailer. Lindsay Lohan stars in the supernatural thriller, which is her first movie in six years. Lohan was last seen in 2013's The Canyons, which was slammed by critics. However, Lohan's acting work in the movie was given praise by fans, who assumed that she was going to start working more frequently. Filming on Among the Shadows actually started in 2015 and Lohan was under the impression that the movie was going to hit theaters in 2016.

Among the Shadows centers on Kristy Wolfe (Charlotte Beckett), a private investigator who, along with her partner (Gianni Capaldi), seeks to unravel the mystery behind her uncle's murder, all while trying to conceal the fact she descends from a line of werewolves. Lindsay Lohan stars as Patricia Sherman, the wife of a European president, who hires Wolfe to find out who is trying to murder her husband.
