Many fans of the sci-fi genre are looking forward to seeing the sci-fi horror Alien franchise continue on the small screen with the “FX on Hulu” TV series called Alien: Earth, which stars Sydney Chandler and is coming our way from Fargo creator Noah Hawley. The 8-episode first season of the show is set to debut with two episodes on Tuesday, August 12, at 8 p.m. Et on Hulu and the FX linear channel, and via Disney+ internationally – and before we get to the premiere date, Chandler has already started working on another genre project, a sci-fi road trip movie called Anima. In this film, she will be sharing the screen with Emmy-nominated Shōgun star Takehiro Hira.
The narrative feature directorial debut of documentarian Brian Tetsuro Ivie (Emanuel), who also wrote the screenplay, Anima tells the story of an impulsive young woman and a reclusive older man who launch on a poignant cross‑country road trip.

Alien: Earth star Sydney Chandler has landed a leading role in a science fiction road movie alongside Shōgun star Takehiro Hira. Anima is being written and directed by documentary filmmaker Brian Tetsuro Ivie.
Per Deadline, Tetsuro Ivie will be making his feature directorial debut with an alternate future story that sounds like it could be a Black Mirror episode. Chandler stars in Anima as a young woman who impulsively goes on a very unusual road trip with an older man (played by Hira). When the man discovers his consciousness is fading, it's up to Chandler's character to get him to a cutting-edge facility where he can undergo a memory-upload surgery.
"I’ve always loved road movies and I’m very thankful to have two brilliant actors on the journey with me," Tetsuro Ivie said in a statement. "I really think people will be surprised by where the story goes."

Books and TV shows have had a special relationship for over a century now. There have been countless TV adaptations of popular books, and even if we count this year (which isn’t over), there have been over seven or eight. While there have been many brilliant books that were adapted through the years, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the TV shows are also good, and that’s why we decided to compile a list of the absolute best TV shows that were based on books. As a side note, we also decided not to include Game of Thrones and Dexter, mainly because of how they ended.

John Maclean’s acclaimed 2015 revisionist Western Slow West brought a Scotsman to the American West. With his second film, Tornado, Maclean takes the Western to Scotland — this time blending elements of a samurai film. This is an evocative portrait of a rugged 1790s Scotland, brought to life by Robbie Ryan’s gorgeous cinematography, which makes striking imagery out of smoke, sun and the browns of dried-out grass.
Tornado is about more than violence. It’s an exploration of clashing cultures, perceptively explored through Tornado (Japanese popstar-turned-actor Kōki) and her father Fujin (Takehiro Hira). Fujin speaks Japanese, while Tornado insists on English; she eats with a fork, he wants her to use chopsticks. Fujin intends to instill the way of the samurai in Tornado, but she seems distant during lessons. There is one message of Fujin’s that Tornado takes to heart, one that preaches patience: “Know when to move and when to wait,...

The crossover between the samurai and the western genres is one of the biggest and most important intersections in cinema history. Every movie buff knows that westerns influenced samurai movies, which inspired westerns, which influenced the samurai genre to evolve, with the back-and-forth repeating for several more cycles. Tornado, a new action thriller directed by John Maclean, is a love letter to both genres as it blends the tropes, conventions, and iconography of samurai and western movies to create a truly unique amalgamation. As you'd then expect, Maclean was inspired by some true classics, as well as some lesser-known gems of both genres.
John Maclean sat down with MovieWeb's George Edelman to discuss his new feature, Tornado. The film held its world premiere at the Glasgow Film Festival in February of this year, and is set for a wider theatrical release on June 13. Tornado is far from Maclean's first western — 2015's Slow West,...

In 2015, Viola Davis won the Best Drama Actress Emmy for How to Get Away with Murder, becoming the category's first Black winner. That left one acting category that had yet to produce a Black champ: Best Drama Supporting Actor. Ten years later, that remains the case — even the short form acting categories, which were created in 2016 and consolidated into one in 2024, have awarded Black performers — but that could finally change in September with Severance star Tramell Tillman.
Tillman is currently in third place in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actor odds, trailing Walton Goggins (The White Lotus) and Severance costar John Turturro. Tillman is the only Black performer in the top seven. Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus) round out the predicted field.

Season 2 of Shogun is currently in development, and fans of the acclaimed novel by James Clavell are equal parts anxious and excited to see how FX will proceed with the series while going off-book. The success of FX’s Shogun has seemingly inspired a resurgence in interest in the samurai genre — a genre that was admittedly perfected in the 1950s and 1960s. While filmmaker John Maclean (Slow West) doesn’t necessarily add anything to the genre with his thriller Tornado, the strong craftsmanship and economical storytelling allow it to be an entertaining reminder of many of the movies you probably love.
Tornado Review
Tornado tells the story of the daughter of a traveling roadshow performer who is forced to step into her father’s former samurai shoes when she crosses paths with a gang of bandits. Set in England in the 1700s, Tornado has a slightly different setting than viewers might be used to seeing from the genre but feels definitively throwback-y nevertheless.

Let there be no doubt: "Shōgun" was the television event of 2024. Most streaming aggregators ranked it as the most viewed series across all platforms for the year, while critics showered the adaptation of James Clavell's epic novel with praise ("Shōgun" season 1 holds a 100% Fresh rating with Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics). The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences were equally enamored of the series, bestowing it with an unprecedented 18 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most ever dished out to a single show for one season. It took home nearly all of the top creative awards for a drama series as well, losing only Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series because it was nominated twice in both categories.
After enchanting critics and mainstream viewers alike, it should come as no surprise that "Shōgun" season 2 will easily be the most anticipated television event whenever it premieres.

FX is plotting its return to feudal Japan, setting a production start date for season two of its Emmy-winning drama Shogun.
Season two of the series — which set a record at last year’s Emmys with 18 wins — is set to begin production in Vancouver in January 2026. The announcement serves as official confirmation that a second season will indeed happen (though it was never really in doubt) after FX announced it was developing two additional installments in May 2024.
Co-creators and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks recently wrapped a writers room for the coming season, which will jump off from the James Clavell novel that formed the source material for season one.

John Maclean returns five years after his haunting debut Slow West with Tornado, a samurai-western revenge thriller transplanted to the grimly beautiful British Isles of the 1790s. Once again teaming with cinematographer Robbie Ryan and composer Jed Kurzel, Maclean threads a tale of relentless pursuit through landscapes that seem suspended between history and myth.
At its heart is Tornado (Kôki), a fiercely determined puppeteer’s daughter raised in the itinerant carnival she shares with her samurai-trained father, Fujin (Takehiro Hira). When she seizes two bags of stolen gold, she ignites a merciless chase led by the steel-eyed bandit Sugarman (Tim Roth) and his mutinous son, Little Sugar (Jack Lowden). Their slow, foot-bound advance across wind-lashed fields evokes a world rugged enough to swallow any conventional pursuit whole.
Dialogue is sparse; every whispered threat and clipped response lands with the weight of ancient rites. The film unfolds in weather-scarred frames where...

Japanese jidaigeki movies are among the most popular genres of Japanese cinema, especially those made by Akira Kurosawa. Similar to what Westerns were in Hollywood, these movies captured the essence of old Japanese culture while providing viewers with amazing stories.
And while the West has tried to replicate such movies with its own period pieces, on a general level, they were not as successful, although the recent success of the Shogun series might point to a new trend.
In light of that, we are happy to announce that Joh Maclean’s period piece Tornado is getting a wide release soon, and in this article, you are going to find out how it is all connected to jidaigeki films.

Collider is thrilled to partner with IFC Films to unveil the first exclusive trailer for Tornado, which premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival in February. In addition to Roth, Hira, and McCann, Jack Lowden and Kōki, have also been set for roles in Tornado, which is a thriller coming from writer/director John Maclean. Maclean made his feature debut in Slow West, the 2015 R-rated Western thriller starring Kodi Smit-McPhee opposite Caren Pistorius.

The script is lean, the sword edges keen and the characters mean in Tornado. The second feature from John Maclean – a long time coming since 2015’s Slow West – is a stripped back and propulsive affair centring on a Japanese puppeteer’s daughter, Tornado (model-turned-actress Kôki), who finds herself unexpectedly on the run from a gang of criminals led by Sugarman (Tim Roth) against the bleak and wild backdrop of 1790s Britain.
Maclean plunges us straight into a chase, with Tornado and a young boy (Nathan Malone) desperately fleeing Sugarman, his son Little Sugar (Jack Lowden) and the rest of Sugarman’s cronies, before winding us back to show how a puppet show performance with her father (Takehiro Hira) – a skilful and entertaining interlude in its own right – led Tornado’s path to cross theirs.

Ten years ago, John Maclean launched his directorial debut Slow West at the Sundance Film Festival, and in that 1860s Western film, the writer-director populated the story with immigrants from Ireland, Germany and Scotland who all mixed on the American frontier with Native Americans. For his second directorial effort Tornado, which opened the Glasgow Film Festival on Wednesday, the Scottish helmer applied a similar premise.
“Slow West was populated from people all over the world and I wanted to suggest the same thing in Britain,” Maclean tells Deadline of his newest film. “I had read and heard a few things about samurais turning up in Spain and, a bit later, turning up in Scotland. There was a bit of an exodus of samurais because they were changing position all the time in Japan and they were becoming less warriors and more guns for hire, or swords for hire, and they wandered.

The second feature from John Maclean is an almost surreal tale of itinerant martial arts performers and a band of thieves in 18th-century Scotland
John Maclean’s new movie is a dour, pessimistic, almost surrealistically downbeat revenge western set in Scotland in the late 18th century – but it could as well be happening in some post-apocalyptic landscape of the distant future or on another planet. This is the follow-up to his debut Slow West, and as with that film it is shot by Robbie Ryan with music by Jed Kurzel (director Justin’s brother and collaborator). I have to admit, though, that this does not quite have the energy or the fluency of that previous film, perhaps not the same production resources either – and by comparison it is more strenuously contrived. Yet the pure strangeness of the movie commands attention and there is a charismatic lead performance by Japanese actor-musician Mitsuki Kimura,...

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is MCU’s most recent installment and Sam Wilson’s first solo adventure as Captain America as he faces Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus Ross, who over the course of the movie becomes the Red Hulk.
The film has allegedly faced its share of challenges, including reshoots, plot leaks, and mixed reactions from test screenings. Some reports suggested that test audiences found the political themes unengaging, the action underwhelming, and the romance lacking chemistry.
To address these concerns, reshoots took place over the summer, reportedly adding $100 million to the budget. Some sources even hint that elements of the ‘World War Hulk’ storyline may have been incorporated into the story.

There's enough information for viewers who haven't read the book to get the gist of what's important, but most of the rich detail of the book is necessarily omitted. If you're a fan of the show who's looking for a fuller understanding of these characters' often-overlapping family trees and alliances,...
