Exclusive: Odette Annable (Supergirl) is set to topline Anima, a psychological horror film written and directed by Colombia’s Andrés Beltrán (Tarumama).

Others on board for roles include Allegra Leguizamo (Tin Soldier), Julio Cesar Cedillo (Sicario), Tony Revolori (Scream VI), and Andres Londono (Fear the Walking Dead). Production is underway now in Bogotá.

Anima follows Helena (Annable), a forensic medical investigator overwhelmed by grief after the death of her husband Richard (Londono). When she becomes obsessed with a disturbing new case, Helena starts to believe she can bring Richard back — unleashing a cascade of terrifying consequences.

Revolori plays Pablo, a key figure tied to the mystery that pulls Helena further into a spiral of obsession and horror. Leguizamo portrays Helena’s daughter, Julia.

Shudder's Quicksand is a generic, run-of-the-mill survival horror flick that does little to keep the audience rooting for its main characters. The film is predictable and doesn't offer anything overtly memorable or original. The stakes are high, but not high enough, and because the audience never gets to know the characters, it all feels redundant. Quicksand is competently made, but can never manage to stand above mediocrity.

Directed by Andres Beltran from a script by Matt Pitts, Quicksand follows married couple Sofia and Josh (Carolina Gaitán and Allan Hawco), who travel to Columbia for a conference. Shudder survival thriller Quicksand builds an entire premise around its namesake, leaving a bickering, estranged married couple trapped in a pit of despair. Director Andrés Beltrán and writer Matt Pitts approach the B-movie concept with a seriousness that nearly works for their efficient thriller, placing relevance on the emotional stakes for its leads over jungle thrills. It leaves the thrills underplotted in Quicksand, however.

An opening sequence introduces the unforgiving terrain; a pair of poachers prowl a dangerous area of the Colombian jungle called Las Arenas to hunt and retrieve valuable skin from a venomous snake. Cut to couple Josh (Allan Hawco) and his wife Sofia (Carolina Gaitán) as they head to a medical conference in Bogotá; but the car ride there is rife with friction despite Josh’s best efforts to diffuse the tension. The estranged couple is gearing up for divorce, making this business trip even more uncomfortable.

This week brings along with it brand new original horror movies from both Screambox and Shudder, while a hit horror movie over at Netflix gets a fresh new spinoff installment.

Quicksand, the new Colombian thriller from Andres Beltran, follows a married couple who are on the brink of divorce, as they travel to Colombia together for a work conference. The couple decides to take a hike on an isolated route to a nearby waterfall, and after stumbling upon a carjacker, run away through the forest and fall into a pit of quicksand. The story is written by Matt Pitts, and stars Allan Hawkco, Carolina Gaitan (Encanto), and Sebastian Elslava.

The film is produced by Dawn's Light, Elemental Stories, Sangre Films, and Twenty Two Pictures, and is a Shudder original movie, available on the horror-centric streaming service (and AMC+) on Friday, July 14th, 2023.

Remember quicksand? Movies back in the day probably made you terrified of being sucked down into a patch while walking in the woods, but there’s a good chance you never actually ended up encountering any quicksand in real life. That’s a good thing, of course. But the characters in the upcoming survival thriller Quicksand, you may have guessed, aren’t so lucky.

Some of them were known performers taking on new characters, with established actors like Ed Harris as the mysterious Man in Black and Anthony Hopkins adding a little class to the story of a very adult theme park full of robots just waiting to go kill-crazy. However, the performers who weren’t as well-known stood out because they all had very distinctive looks, and few characters in Westworld stood out quite like Angela Sarafyan. Exclusive: Altitude Film Sales has boarded worldwide sales rights to high-concept survival thriller Quicksand and will introduce first footage to buyers in Cannes next week.

The U.S.-Colombia co-production recently completed shooting in Bogota and is now in post-production. Above is a first look.

Exclusive: Carolina Gaitán, the Colombian actress and singer who voiced Pepa in Disney’s Encanto and will perform at the Oscars on Sunday, is leading the cast of survival thriller Quicksand.

Gaitán will star alongside Allan Hawco in the English-language movie, which follows a married couple on the brink of divorce who become trapped in quicksand while hiking through a Colombian rainforest. It’s a struggle for survival as they battle the elements of the jungle and must work together in order to escape.

Andrés Beltrán is directing the pic, which was written by Matt Pitts. The project is produced by Las Vegas-based production company Sangre Films, which is a joint venture between Colombian outfit Elemental Stories and U.S. companies 222 Pictures and Dawn’s Light Movies.

Producers are Jason Cherubini of Dawn’s Light Media, Nicolas Reyes of Elemental Stories and Sean Patrick Burke of 222 Pictures.

And we’re back — not literally back in Westworld, mind you, despite Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) stopping by his former home on the way to Delos headquarters. No, the most notable return in an episode filled with returns is that of the tried and untrue “Westworld” house style. Flashy twists on top of long bouts of bewildering exposition add up to very little substantive development, while plenty of choices simply don’t add up at all. All the work Episode 1 put into rebooting the series is tossed aside this week as “Westworld” screws around in its old game before crashing back to reality — or wherever we are now.

Television series Revolution, which ended a two-year run on NBC in May 2014, are going to get a resolution to the show's storylines that were left open-ended in the final broadcast episode. In response to passionate fan efforts to revive the show, the entire creative team behind the series - including executive producers Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Rockne S. O'Bannon and Jon Favreau - regrouped to create a special four-chapter digital comic book with DC Comics that will serve to continue and ultimately resolve the adventures last seen in Revolution's second season finale.

An oddly subdued episode, “The Children’s Crusade” feels like a placeholder episode despite some big revelations and moments. The flash-forward sequence in the teaser seems out of place, yet there are few other complaints about a solid episode.

It provides with an intriguing look at a band of hardy kids who live together without an adult. When one is captured by the Militia to be brainwashed and conscripted into a soldier, Charlie leads the charge in bringing him back in the reasonably entertaining lead story.

While it’s a spin on the bad-guy-of-the-week trope, Charlie being branded is a bold move, and should provide greater tension in the weeks ahead. The troubles that clearly lie ahead because of this is neatly foreshadowed when the kids check...

This time Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) is caught up and sucked into a sob story involving several orphaned children. One in their group has been captured, Peter (Griffin Freeman), and his brother, Michael, wants him back. Rescuing Danny can pretty much be forgotten at this point. The next fourty minutes is spent in a swashbuckling episode that puts Charlie in a precarious position. This was an exciting episode despite the show's main plot moving forward ever so slowly. The children, "a hairless group of Ewoks" (Aaron), have been left alone by their parents for eight years now.

After last week’s disappointing episode, Fringe is back in fine form this week, abandoning the wacky and more extreme elements in favor of a straightforward character study of the often overlooked Lincoln Lee. Granted, on Fringe “straightforward” is a trip to the Other Universe and a homeless shapeshifting vigilante, but the majority of the episode is spent with Agent Lee getting to know Fauxlivia and Linclone and evaluating himself and how he’s come to this point in his life.

This week, on Fringe: Lincoln isn’t sleeping, Olivia has migraines, Peter’s having trouble adjusting, and Eugene just wants to be seen

After last week’s excellent episode, “Wallflower” has a lot to live up to, and, frankly, a dip in quality is almost to be expected. Even with that in mind, this week’s episode of Fringe fails to impress, ruining a promising setup and interesting cliffhanger by committing one of the cardinal film and television sins in its third act- plot-necessitated stupidity. There’s nothing wrong with a character being stupid or making foolhardy mistakes, but when a character makes an out of character, stupid decision for no legitimate reason other than that the plot demands it, any attachment to the character or moment goes out the window.

We were never meant to know exactly what other people are thinking. It's a given fact that our own egos, not to mention our hearts, are saved a great deal of grief by not being able to peer into the mind of the person sitting across from us at the dinner table, or the girl at the coffee shop, or the estranged lover whose mixed signals you're desperately trying to parse. Sometimes, it's better not to know what secrets lurk inside that mind, what true thoughts they're concealing from you, and perhaps just what feelings they're struggling with. For Olivia, the opportunity to peek into Peter Bishop's mind would be a gift, to be able to separate the feelings that he claims to have for Olivia from the experiences he shared with Fauxlivia. I haven't written about 'Fringe' this season, largely because it's one of those shows that I tend to sit back and just watch.

But hot damn was last night's episode good, continuing a trend of excellent episodes since the start of this season.

One of the problems with these Monster-of-the-week episodes is that the monster/bad guy themselves aren't really that interesting. Too often, they're played as stock villains, who have no real motive other than to be evil. So kudos to writers David Wilcox and Matthew Pitts for creating a villain with a real conflict, and kudos to Marcus Giamatti for playing it so well. I really felt for the poor guy as he realised that in order to complete his mission, he'd have to abandon his life as a civilian with a family.

Bloody Disgusting learned that Fringe writer Matt Pitts is packing up for a vacation into the horror genre with Spring Break Zombie Cruise, a new 3-D feature. With most of the partying students turned into zombies, its up to a soldier and a group of co-eds to contain the virus before it reaches land and before they are eaten." In an article focusing on Hollywood's 3D craze, the L.A. Times reports that Matt Pitts has penned Spring Break Zombie Cruise , a new horror film aimed for, of course, 3D. Story: A man dying of cancer is going around intentionally exposing specific victims to his disease — but cancer isn't supposed to be contagious, and it's certainly not supposed to kill an infected host mere minutes after exposure! Cue the Fringe team, as Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) begins to realize that this isn't just any man, but one of her former Cortexiphan classmates from Jacksonville.

But the sick man is just one pressing matter on Olivia's plate, as the tightly wound special agent debates whether or not to betray Walter (John Noble) by telling Peter (Joshua Jackson) the truth about his alternate reality origins.

Cancer Man & The Cortexiphan Kids: Cool name for a band, no? Mysteries of the week are always compelling when they have interplay with the overarching mythology of "Fringe," which was exactly the case in tonight's installment.
