‘In Her Hands': Afghanistan’s Youngest Mayor Zarifa Ghafari Fights For Women’s Rights During Taliban Takeover in Trailer (Video)
Hillary Clinton
Netflix has released the trailer for the Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton-produced documentary “In Her Hands,” a feature about Afghanistan’s youngest mayor and her struggle to survive under Taliban rule after Western forces withdrew from the region.

The film chronicles Zarifa Ghafari’s journey from becoming Maidan Shahr’s first and only female mayor at age 26 to the devastation her nation faced when the Taliban reclaimed power.

For two years, directors Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen followed Ghafari as she is forced to make difficult choices to protect her people and herself. In one harrowing sequence, Ghafari receives a final warning to leave the region or else risk an assassination attempt – which she ends up narrowly surviving.

The trailer also covers Ghafari’s fight for women’s education, which she describes as “the key to a country’s development.”

The film documents her fight for survival against the backdrop of her country’s accelerated unraveling as Western forces announce their retreat and the Taliban returns to power. Amid these tectonic changes, Zarifa must make the most difficult decision of her life.

“In Her Hands,” which is directed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen (“Watani: My Homeland”), premiered in Toronto on Sept. 9.

The Clintons served as executive producers on the film, which marks the first non-fiction effort for their London-headquartered HiddenLight Productions. Ben Silverman’s...

In 2020, the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) is set to expand its pitching event FACTory, to give greater exposure for projects from development to rough cut stage.

Submissions are now open, and the updated forum will include three strands: Forum Pitches, Rough Cut Sessions and New Talent Pitch.

For projects in development and production, Forum Pitches will be organised with a new focus on genre to ensure the best possible visibility to commissioners, funders, streamers, networks, distributors, sales agents and more. For projects in post-production, Rough Cut Sessions, will be a new closed-to-public program of rough cut screenings for invited decision makers only. This has been specifically designed to close financing gaps, and secure sales, distribution and festival opportunities. Projects including a first-time director or first-time producer will immediately be considered for the New Talent Pitch, providing Aidc an...

2017 Oscar Nominated Documentary Shorts Review: Humanity Prevails in This Politically Charged Group
Aleppo (2015)
When the nominees for best short films are read during the Oscars ceremony, most viewers at home have little to no associations with any of the films. That’s something that ShortsHD is hoping to fix when they partner with Magnolia Pictures to show the nominated films in all three short form categories — live action, animated, and documentary — in 500 screens across North America this Friday. This year’s short documentaries are not lighthearted, but tell vital human stories about resistance in the face of suffering.

Three of the films show different groups affected by the war in Syria: The civilians risking their lives for their homeland, the bystanders thrust into the fray, and the children caught in the crosshairs, while the other two offerings also highlight personal sacrifice in the face of struggle. Third Delivery Man Poster Puts Vince Vaughn In Front of Happy Group
A new poster is in from DreamWorks' Delivery Man throwing star Vince Vaughn's David Wozniak in front of some of the kids he's unknowingly fathered. It looks a bit too photoshopped with the group in the back blurred, indicating a previous image with Vaughn transplanted over the front, and perhaps working that a bit to make it come off a tad more realistic, would have improved the overall product, but not too shabby. Delivery Man really does look like a solid comedy, mixing in moments of drama, that should leave audiences feeling warm and fuzzy come its November 22nd, 2013 release date. At the recent Los Angeles red carpet premiere, we caught up with Vince Vaughn, Cobie Smulders, writer Martin Petit, who co-wrote the original Starbuck on which this film is based, alongside helmer Ken Scott, producer Andre Rouleau and executive producer Scott Mednick, Dave Patten, Derrick Arthur and Stephen Ellis.
