Everyone Else Burns Season 2 Review: Praise Be to the Return of this Cult Hit Comedy!
Image
Set in the close-knit community of an evangelical church in Manchester, Everyone Else Burns makes its triumphant return for a second season of belly laughs and thought-provoking fun. Drewing from writer Dillon Mapletoft’s own upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian environment, this cult sitcom charmed audiences with its first outing. While Season 1 centered around family man David Lewis’ ambitions and dreams for his children, the new episodes shift focus to relationships and matters of the heart.

As ever, comedy gold arises from probing the eccentricities of cult life through the day-to-day happenings of the Lewis family. Dad David remains a hapless leader, mom Fiona seeks purpose beyond motherhood, and rebellious daughter Rachel comes of age—now faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage.

Besides sharp wit and razor-thin social satire, what makes Everyone Else Burns such unmissable viewing is its deep care for humanizing even the most extreme of characters.

The series, which ran for three seasons, was turned into a feature film in 2011 and followed the friends on a chaotic vacation to Crete. The first movie was a reasonable box office success, leading to the production of a sequel, which shipped the friends off to Australia.

Joe Thomas Reveals ‘Inbetweeners’ Cast Open to Third Film
Joe Thomas
Joe Thomas, the actor known for portraying Simon Cooper on the popular British comedy series “The Inbetweeners,” has indicated there could be another film featuring the show’s characters. In a recent podcast appearance, Thomas said he would be open to reuniting with his co-stars for a possible third movie installment.

While speaking on the “Always Be Comedy” podcast, Thomas expressed that he remains close with James Buckley, Simon Bird, and Blake Harrison, the actors who played his friends on the sitcom. According to Thomas, the cast enjoys working together and would consider collaborating again under the right circumstances. He proposed a “stag do,” or British bachelor party, as an engaging plotline that could bring the characters back together years after the original series.

Thomas believes a film format would better suit a potential reunion compared to reviving the television show. He noted challenges in scheduling new episodes years later.

Amandaland | Motherland spin-off greenlit at the BBC
Tanya Moodie, Lucy Punch, Paul Ready, Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, and Philippa Dunne in Motherland (2016)
Motherland spin-off Amandaland has been commissioned for a series at BBC Two, here are the details.

Motherland was a terrific sitcom created by Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, Helen Serafinowicz and Graham Linehan, who stepped away from the show after the first series. It chronicled the never ending stress of motherhood through the eyes of the perpetually put-upon Julia, (Anna Maxwell Martin), who tries to do the best she can as she battles with the ‘Alpha Mums’, led by the acerbic Amanda (Lucy Punch). She’s supported by her blunt best friend Liz (Diane Morgan) and stay at home Dad Kevin (Paul Brady).

Earlier this year, Horgan confirmed that the show had been quietly cancelled by the BBC, but she also revealed that a spin-off was in the early stages of development.

According to the British Comedy Guide, the spin-off will be called Amandaland, and a six episode series has been commissioned.

Friday Night Dinner’s Goodmans are the Perfect Horrible Comedy Family
Image
Friday Night Dinner knows the truth about families. Not that they bicker, mock and childishly compete – sitcom’s known about that since Steptoe & Son. No, Friday Night Dinner knows that families aren’t made up of people; they’re made up of odd habits.

Did you ever invite a friend home from school and pray that none of your family’s Weird Stuff would leak out into the playground the next day? That your mum’s special word for a fart wouldn’t follow you down the corridor into Maths, and the dinner hall wouldn’t echo with the high-pitched voice in which you all talk to the dog? Perhaps you hoped against hope that your brother wouldn’t be wearing his comedy Viz Buster Gonad t-shirt, that no-one would see the wooden clothes peg holding open the choke on your dad’s car, and that nobody would call...

‘Such Brave Girls’ Review: Hulu’s Family Comedy Is Cringe Humor at Its Finest
Image
“Most people aren’t wet for trauma like we are,” Josie (Kat Sadler) tells her sister Billie (Lizzie Davidson) in the pilot of Hulu’s “Such Brave Girls,” as they scroll through the social media of the girl Billie’s ex is now seeing. “She’s ‘live laugh love.’ We’re…death, silence, hate.”

While it’s arguably the thesis of Hulu’s new series, produced by A24 and Various Artists Ltd., “Such Brave Girls” has a lot of laughs and a lot to love. Sadler created, executive produced, and stars in the gloriously uncomfortable comedy as the perpetually depressed Josie, on a search to find herself with the often misguided help of Billie and their mother Deb (Louise Brealey). Simon Bird directed all six episodes, which premiered on BBC Three in November.

What immediately sets “Such Brave Girls” apart and pops off the screen is the chemistry of real-life sisters Sadler and Davidson,...

The CW Cancels Two More Scripted Shows Despite the Recent Renewal of One of Them
Image
The CW continues to cancel series, including Run the Burbs and Everyone Else Burns, limiting its scripted show catalog. Successful shows like Supernatural, the Arrowverse, and Riverdale have helped The CW stay alive despite streaming competition. The network needs to find new original shows that follow successful models to sustain its brand identity.

The crisis continues on The CW. The network has canceled a long list of series in recent months, increasingly limiting its scripted show catalog, and they continue to do so with two new victims, Run the Burbs and Everyone Else Burns.

Run the Burbs premiered in 2022 on the Canadian network CBC Television, and was acquired by The CW in July 2023. The plot centers on a family living in the suburbs of the fictional town of Rockridge, and they seek to give a new spin to their lives, trying extremely new things. The show was created by Scott Townend and Andrew Phung,...

Image
Because the fall festivals had fewer actors and writers on hand due to the strikes, more independent movies came into the season looking for buyers. Below is the running list of movies that have found buyers.

Movies Acquired After the Festivals

‘Everyone Else Burns’ Review: The CW’s British Comedy Laces Doomsday Cringe With Sweetness as Well as Snark
Image
For nearly two decades, The CW wasn’t TV’s most popular network — outside of carefully curated demographics — but it might have been the network most confident in its brand. Shows on The CW looked and felt like they were shows that could exist only on The CW.

Currently, I struggle to find the proper analogy to describe the grab bag of acquisitions that fill The CW’s schedule since the network was acquired by the Nexstar Media Group.

Is the process of surfing through the CW slate, trying to guess a program’s origins, like taking a road trip with the family and playing the license plate game? “There’s New Mexico! There’s British Columbia! How did New Brunswick get all the way over here?”

Or is The CW’s strategy of picking up motley offerings that weren’t on the radar of Netflix or Hulu or Max...

The CW Renews British Comedy For Season 2 Ahead Of Premiere After Slashing Scripted Line-Up
Image
The CW has renewed the British comedy Everyone Else Burns for season 2 ahead of its US premiere, demonstrating their commitment to acquiring cost-effective programming. The CW's acquisition of Everyone Else Burns as a co-producer aligns with their new direction of creating programming for a wider audience through older casts and sitcoms. The early renewal of Everyone Else Burns allows The CW to account for potential delays caused by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and adjust their programming schedule accordingly.

Amid cutbacks on scripted programming and a change in direction, The CW has renewed British comedy Everyone Else Burns for season 2 ahead of its US premiere. The series stars The Inbetweeners' Simon Bird, Kate O'Flynn, Harry Connor, and Amy James-Kelly as the incredibly devout and strict Lewis family. James-Kelly's Rachel attempts to find her own way outside of her family's lifestyle without damning her soul. Everyone Else Burns premiered on Channel 4...
