Between The Bear, The Menu, Boiling Point and now House Of Spoils, it has never looked less appetising to be a chef. What's coming to our screens is back-breaking, stressful work judged by ungrateful customers and snooty critics. As a celebrated New York chef-patron tells us in House Of Spoils’ opening scene, “To be a chef, you've got to love the taste of blood. You've got to love the fight.” And then follows that ominous advice with a line that would have even Remy from Ratatouille abandoning his aprons: “I gotta remember to not just cook with my head but with my balls.”
Unsanitary cooking advice and toxic workplaces aside, things get considerably worse for House Of Spoils’ Chef (Ariana DeBose). Nefarious forces set upon her new rural fine-dining restaurant, and having employees that can't tell a monkfish from a chicken prove to be least of her problems.

There are several culinary series about making food, about chefs, about traveling and being introduced to a variety of foods from different cultures and movies about the restaurant industry (the dark comedy The Menu instantly comes to mind). A lot of the time the focus is so much on the stress of working in the food industry and the experience of a high-end meal, but not on the soil it comes from. House of Spoils is an exploration of witchcraft, land, and the respect it should be given, and a study of the perversion and stress of the restaurant industry.

A surprisingly clever riff on a familiar recipe, Prime Video’s “House of Spoils” seems like a dark fairy tale you could make better yourself — at first. Part “The Bear” and part “The Witch,” this supernatural horror outing follows a nameless Chef (Ariana DeBose) in an allegory about ambitious women that lacks bite but isn’t without its own special sauce.
Writer/directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy broke out with their tenacious crime thriller “Blow the Man Down” in 2019 and show a well-earned confidence in this imperfect but still occasionally enchanting first-time genre effort. The duo’s second feature builds on a bare-bones concept that feels more rudimentary than rustic much of the time, and yet, the filmmakers’ decisive presentation is enjoyable enough as an entrée served straight to streaming.

Plot: Follows an ambitious chef as she opens a restaurant on a remote estate where she battles kitchen chaos, crushing self-doubts… and a haunting presence who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.
Review: The restaurant business is murder. If The Menu and The Bear did not give us enough insight into the stress, anxiety, and sheer psychological warfare of being a chef, Gordon Ramsey and every cooking reality competition should have made it abundantly clear that the artisans that create haute cuisine are emotionally broken by the work they love. The latest Blumhouse offering, House of Spoils, takes the work of starting a restaurant to a new level with a tale of supernatural cookery that may have you rethinking any upcoming reservations at a fine dining establishment. Led by Ariana DeBose, House of Spoils presents a conventional horror yarn through a distinctly epicurean lens.

A film headlining a chef and overtones of witchery are combined in Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s “House of Spoils.” The garden both inspires and holds secrets to yesteryear’s terror. What does all the foliage hold in themselves? The directors attempt a dark mystery, but the film squanders it freely, cobbling together a lazy plot that spruces up an explanatory flashback to bolster a story of female agency and determination.
The narrative fizzles out quickly, saved only up to a degree by its lead, Ariana DeBose, who admittedly works a tad too zealously. It’s the case of an actor so stubbornly convinced she can single-handedly rescue a terribly clueless script that her presence, despite being the sole sincere spot, starts to stand out in some other distracting register.

Witches have gotten a bad rap. Portrayed alternately as conniving tricksters, bearers of bad omens, casters of curses, and perpetrators of evil, these herbal and medicinal craft practitioners have been given the decidedly short end of the stick. House of Spoils, from writing-directing duo Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, makes a noble attempt to reframe neopagan practices and their proponents as much more than cackling antagonists. Inherent to witchcraft is a connection to the natural world, a distinction that this present film seeks to elucidate, which makes it a far more intriguing affair than the typical archetype-trundling trifle.
We begin with a flurry of mysterious images: hands mashing a cerise concoction of ambiguous ingredients, pages of a manuscript containing humanoid figures sprouting leaves from their heads. For those who don't particularly care for codicology, the mandrake, and its artistic anthropomorphization are intrinsic to witchcraft, the personification of a plant...

An ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) opens her first restaurant in a remote location and faces kitchen chaos, immense self-doubt, and a supernatural presence trying to sabotage her success at every turn. This is the simple, straightforward premise of House of Spoils, written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (Blow the Man Down), with DeBose as the main attraction. I consider DeBose (West Side Story) a versatile artist unafraid to take on roles in new genres, as her career has shown so far, so expectations were mostly positive.

As The Bear regularly commits category fraud to pass off its boiling-over stresses as comedy, House Of Spoils throws an extra ingredient into the heart attack atmosphere of high-end kitchens: a ghost. The haunted restaurant horror tosses plenty into the pot, but the half-developed flavors rest uneasily on the palate.

Delicious food, darkened bruja folklore, and Ariana DeBose? House of Spoils is a complete meal, albeit smaller bites. Filmmakers Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy lose themselves in witch’s brew of naturalistic psychological horrors, filtered through the cutthroat business of restauranteurship. Don't expect The Menu — Cole and Krudy find salvation in soil borne worship that connects with Mother Nature's literal roots. There's so much power in thematic ideas, yet storytelling feels restrained in unfortunate ways. Cole and Krudy replicate Chef's Table cinematography as immaculate dishes head to tables, juxtaposed against unappetizing rotten visuals. However, there's an apprehension that leaves the audience still craving something more.
Ariana DeBose stars as a driven New York City chef who gambles her career on a scenic upstate restaurant. She ditches Tauras, comfortable paychecks, and her mentor Marcello (Marton Csokas) for entrepreneurial partner Andres (Arian Moayed) and a haunted house in the middle of nowhere.

Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy’s House of Spoils takes viewers on a haunting journey through the shadows of one ambitious chef’s dreams. Ariana DeBose stars as the unnamed lead, a talented culinary artist who has spent years refining her skills under a renowned mentor. Now, she’s ready to strike out on her own by opening an innovative new restaurant in a remote, centuries-old estate.
DeBose’s character envisions turning the property’s sprawling grounds into an epicurean destination, where foodies will travel for miles to experience her avant-garde tasting menus among lush natural surroundings.
Partnering with an investor, she throws herself into the venture with laser focus. However, strange events soon threaten to derail her ambitions. Food becomes plagued with mold and infestations, while nighttime in the creaky old house brings unexplained occurrences.

The latest collaboration between Blumhouse and Amazon, House of Spoils, explores the high stress restaurant environment with a witchy twist. Writer/Directors Bridget Savage Cole & Danielle Krudy (Blow the Man Down) deliver a culinary visual feast when it comes to the food and the inner workings of the kitchen, one that happens to be a little haunted. But don’t expect heavy scares in this feminine horror film that feels more like Hell’s Kitchen meets Practical Magic.

Ah, they grow up so quickly. It seems like only yesterday Ariana DeBose was playing "The Bullet" that inches closer and closer to ending Alexander Hamilton's life over the course of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway smash-hit "Hamilton." Now, she's an Oscar-winning actor thanks to "West Side Story" and is snagging all manner of gigs, from a role on "Westworld" to a part in Sony's Spider-Man Universe with the upcoming "Kraven the Hunter." On top of all that, DeBose is slated to return for even more meta musical mischief in the second season of "Schmigadoon!"
Adding to her workload, DeBose has now lined up a leading role in Blumhouse's "House of Spoils." The original thriller hales from writers and directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, the duo behind the splendidly chilly, sea-soaked, Coen Brothers-style crime-comedy "Blow the Man Down." Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy are directing the project off their script based on their original idea. ‘House of Spoils’ reteams Cole, Krudy, Secret Engine and Amazon Studios following the latter’s acquisition of Cole and Krudy’s Blow the Man Down, produced by Secret Engine, out of 2019 TIFF. According to Deadline, cameras are expected to roll in the fall.
