Julius Avery's goofy-ass demonic thriller "The Pope's Exorcist" was released in April of 2023, but I think it knows in its heart that it's a January movie. "The Pope's Exorcist" is about Father Gabriele Amorth, a real-life priest who worked as a specialized exorcist for the Diocese of Rome, the district that the Pope himself oversees. Amorth was one of the founding members of the International Association of Exorcists, a very real enclave of some 900 priests who specialize in demonic possession. Amorth wrote two memoirs based on his experiences as an exorcist ("An Exorcist Tells His Story" and "An Exorcist: More Stories"), and the writers of "The Pope's Exorcist" extrapolated them into a very, very loose film adaptation.

Taking on a character that has already been memorialized by another actor is no small task. In many instances, a director will forgo recasting the part and simply rely on technology to do the trick, oftentimes garnering some pushback from fans. In his 2019 film, Doctor Sleep, helmer Mike Flanagan had to make a difficult choice — rely on CGI to carry audiences back to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shiningor find performers who could embody the characters as they appeared nearly four decades prior. For his adaptation of the Stephen King-penned sequel, Flanagan chose the latter, casting Alex Essoe, Carl Lumbly, and Roger Dale Floyd in the roles first held by Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd, respectively.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is a bold, grotesque, and satirical dive into the world of body horror, vanity, and Hollywood’s brutal fixation on youth. Following Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a fitness icon desperate to reclaim her glory days, the story explores the dark lengths one might go to for rejuvenation. When Elisabeth injects a mysterious elixir to regain her youthful appearance, it spawns her younger doppelgänger (Margaret Qualley), igniting a twisted rivalry between the two halves of her identity. In this candy-colored nightmare, The Substance exposes how our obsession with youth can lead to a moral struggle, haunted by the reflection staring back. If you enjoyed its surreal horror and piercing commentary, here are eight movies like The Substance that blend psychological depth, body horror, and biting satire.

Vampires are some of the best monsters in movies and TV shows and the most popular. While they're terrifying and bloodthirsty in most media, the past several decades have delved into the magnetic and seductive qualities of the creatures that much of the original writings about vampires are in conversation with. There are many ways to interpret the popularity of vampires in media, as they're typically used as a metaphor for a taboo subject or hidden desires. This forbidden nature has made vampires the perfect romantic leads for many contemporary series and films.
However, the best vampire TV shows aren't just about romance or horror. They go deeper and attempt to comment on the larger nature of the world and what it means to be human. The most powerful vampires in movies and TV are so fearsome and iconic because the stories they inhabit are so vivid and lend themselves to imaginative world-building.

With the imminent release of The Exorcism, the horror of demonic possession is once again at the forefront of moviegoers' minds. Generally speaking, films that explore demonic possessions have a pretty specific formula. The first act of the story establishes the victim being possessed. The second act involves testing the demon's defenses, which leads directly into the inevitable rite of exorcism for the third and final act.
Many films involving exorcisms draw on what most viewers associate with the rite by incorporating Catholic and Christian ceremonies. Others are more willing to take an unorthodox approach by amalgamating elements from different religions and cultures. Some even use modern-day technology to reach beyond the veil. Each film's approach is notable, but only one thing matters: how scary the exorcism is.

Others are more willing to take an unorthodox approach by amalgamating elements from different religions and cultures. Some even use modern-day technology to reach beyond the veil. Each film's approach is notable, but only one thing matters: how scary the exorcism is.

As director Joshua John Miller prepares to release The Exorcism, starring Russell Crowe, comparisons to The Exorcist are inevitable. However, the link is more than coincidental as the 1973 film featured the filmmaker's dad, Jason Miller, as Father/Dr. Damien Karras.
Speaking to ComicBook, Miller recalled what it was like to see his dad in the classic horror film. "I think the first time I saw it was on TV, so it was heavily edited but still creepy," the director said. "I just remember watching it on a tiny TV in my grandmother's living room. I just remember sitting in her living room, and it was a TV on a tray. It was kind of transgressive because it was like, 'Ooooo you're up late watching a dangerous movie."

Trim Season
Production designer Ariel Vida's sophomore directorial feature, Trim Season, follows a group of young people who isolate themselves on a secluded farm in Northern California, making easy money trimming marijuana. When Emma (Bethlehem Million), Julia (Alex Essoe), and Dusty (Bex Taylor-Klaus), begin to suspect the farm and its matriarch Mona (Jane Badler) are shrouded in dark practices, they realise they might not escape with their lives.
When I connected with Essoe virtually, she was full of enthusiastic energy. The Canadian actress has long been a personal favourite genre performer after first seeing her in Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Starry Eyes. The visceral character she played in Marcus Dunstan's The Neighbour, opposite Josh Stewart, remains one of her most seductive and captivating performances. Together they show her emotional range, moving effortlessly between vulnerability and a cold, distant and rawer presence, that she has built upon throughout her career,...

If you’re in the mood for a splatter flick with more gore than logic, Trim Season might be your ticket. We first see a woman in the woods killing herself as if driven by an unseen force. Cut to a city, where we meet a couple of twenty-somethings, Emma (Bethlehem Million), who is strapped for cash; and her big-sisterly pal Julia (Alexandra Essoe). At a bar, they’re introduced to a guy who offers them temp jobs trimming marijuana plants. It’s quite lucrative, paying $5,000 for two weeks of seasonal work. The recruiter drives them along with a few others to a remote forested region miles from the nearest paved road. Though the year isn’t specified, it seems to be set shortly before weed growing was legalized.

Imperator Furiosa is, in my humble opinion, one of the most important characters to hit the big screen in the last 20 years. She represents a justified rage often denied to women in post-apocalyptic films, a physical capability typically reserved for men who have been shaved down from slabs of meat on a GyroKone, and serves as a protector of the five wives — a woman looking after other women who are treated as little more than a form of currency. When "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller expressed a desire to make a standalone epic prequel focusing on Furiosa, fans were thrilled at the prospect. Charlize Theron beautifully brought Furiosa to life, so it was only natural that she'd be brought back for the film.
During a special screening of "Furiosa" and a press event with Miller at IMAX Headquarters, he explained that replacing Theron was a matter of logistics.

Russell Crowe's performance as Father Gabriele Amorth has propelled The Pope's Exorcist to cult status in just a short time. Producer Jeff Katz has confirmed a sequel is in the works, exciting fans of the supernatural horror film. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a box office success and has a strong international following, hinting at brighter sequel prospects.
Despite only being released in 2023, The Pope's Exorcist has already achieved a level of cult status that some horror films have waited years for. Thanks in large part to Russell Crowe's scenery-chewing performance as Father Gabriele Amorth, the film continues to win over moviegoers who have watched it, and it doesn't hurt that it has been the subject of several internet memes, which has made Crowe on a moped the movie's signature image. It’s been one year since Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems brought The Pope’s Exorcist (read our review Here), a supernatural thriller starring Russell Crowe, to theatres. Just two weeks after the film was released, our friends at Bloody Disgusting heard that a sequel was in development… but then things went quiet for a while. Crowe recently said that The Pope’s Exorcist was meant to kick off a trilogy, but the franchise’s progress had been slowed down by “a change of studio heads.” Things have apparently been worked out, though, because producer Jeff Katz of Worldwide Katz has just taken to social media to announce that the Pope’s Exorcist sequel has been given the greenlight!

The Pope's Exorcist's success paved the way for a possible sequel, or even a trilogy, opening up new avenues for storytelling. Crowe's enthusiasm and a wealth of source material from Father Gabriele Amorth's books suggest exciting possibilities for potential sequels. A stalled ambitious vision for a franchise due to studio changes hints at a future trilogy that could explore exorcism globally.
Russell Crowe has hinted 2023's The Pope's Exorcist might just be the beginning of a larger saga.
With a modest budget of $18 million, the movie managed to rake in over $77 million. The film's box office performance prompted discussions of a sequel. However, Crowe, the star of the film, suggests that the future might hold even more than just one additional installment.
And remember, the man that's based on, Gabriele Amorth, he wrote 12 books. So we have more than enough source material to do one or two more of those films.

Disney capitalized on its popular movies by releasing sequels several decades after the original films, setting the record for the longest gap between sequels. A sequel to the iconic film Easy Rider was released after 43 years, but was poorly received. The longest gap ever between live-action sequels was 54 years, as seen with Mary Poppins Returns, which successfully maintained the charm of the original.
It can appear like every popular movie quickly churned out a follow-up before audiences even had time to take in the first film, however, there were some examples of movies having decades-long gaps between sequels. In the world of animation, this was easier to do as characters didn’t age and sequels could pick up right where they left off without any issues, although live-action movies have also returned after seriously long breaks. Sometimes these sequels recast their long-dormant characters, but other times the original actor returned.
