Heretic Spoilers: A24's Religious Horror Starring Hugh Grant Ends On A Shocking Note
Image
A24's latest twisty chiller, Heretic, is now in theatres, and we're breaking down what happens in the final act of the critically-acclaimed religious horror flick.

Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who broke through with their script for John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Heretic stars Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed, who has some fiendish plans for two missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who come calling.

Initially wary of coming inside the house, the girls feel more at ease when the seemingly gregarious and welcoming Reed tells them that his wife is at home and currently baking a pie in the kitchen. Alarm bells go off when one of them notices a blueberry pie scented candle burning on the table, and Reed's mask begins to slip.

Reed tells his "guests" that they...

Heretic Cast Says The Horror Movie 'Reaffirmed' Their Faith
Image
Heretic will put religion to the test when it hits theaters this November. According to the cast of the A24 horror thriller, the story had an impact on their personal beliefs.

Speaking to ComicBook, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, who play Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton, explained how the film strengthened their faith. "I learned a lot about earlier religions, so I think that's interesting to learn that a lot of religions are just re-iterations of the same story. So that was interesting. But yeah, I've always been kind of agnostic. So this kind of re-affirmed my belief."

'It's a Recognition of Our True Nature:' Hugh Grant Explains Why Villains Like Heretic's Mr. Reed Fascinate Audiences
Image
Heretic promises to up the ante when it comes to its antagonist, Mr. Reed. According to Hugh Grant, who brings the character to life in the upcoming psychological horror from A24, viewers' fascination with villains stems from our true nature.

"If you go to any pantomime, who does the audience love? They love the baddie, and we are drawn to baddies," Grant told GamesRadar+ when asked to share why he thinks audiences are often drawn to bad guys in films and on television. "My personal theory is that it's because we are bad, and it's a recognition of our true nature - selfish, evil, cruel, vicious."

Heretic Star Hugh Grants Villain Was Inspired by Real People in His Life
Image
Hugh Grant is going full-blown baddie in A24s upcoming horror flick, Heretic. True, the award-winning actor has played scoundrels in the past. Grants Daniel Cleaver certainly caused problems aplenty for Bridget Jones (Rene Zellweger) over the years. And who can forget Grants deliciously naughty performance as Fletcher in The Gentlemen? Well, theres no gray area this time: Grant is ghastly! And the thespian draws on real life, particularly people he knows, as inspiration for his cringy character, Mr. Reed. Grant said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

"There have been people in my life who were useful to me, people who were very, very clever - brilliant, really, and in some ways very plausible and quite charming and quite bewitching, but who you gradually realize that there's something deeply wrong with them. And these people very often really struggle to have any relationships in life, any meaningful friendships,...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Is She or Isn’t She? It’s a Dubious Question in Alexandre Aja’s Horror Film
Image
After playing around with genre in a more confined sandbox with Crawl and Oxygen, Never Let Go finds Alexandre Aja venturing back to terrain similar to that of 2003’s High Tension. As in that home invasion thriller, the remote setting in Never Let Go generates an oddly claustrophobic tension all its own, only here the home is a reliable place of safety. It’s a bastion in the woods that protects fraternal twins Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and Sam (Anthony B. Jenkins) from “the Evil” that lies outside their doorstep, and which could destroy them with a single touch. Or so their Momma (Halle Berry) tells them on a daily basis.

Momma demands that whenever her boys go outside, they tie a rope that’s connected to the home around their waists, allowing them to wander only so far into the surrounding woods. This symbolic umbilical cord imagery spells out...

‘Never Let Go’ Review: Halle Berry Hangs On For Dear Life In Gripping Psychological Horror Thriller
Image
French director Alexandre Aja has been known as a member of the horror helming fraternity called the “Splat Pack,” named for the extreme violence in their films. Certainly, many of his pictures, from the 2003 breakthrough Haute Tension and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes, to his exceptional, and most successful film to date, 2019’s Crawl — in which a family is trapped in the crawl space of their home as alligators surround them during a Category 5 hurricane in Florida (a personal favorite of Quentin Tarantino) — have proved his chops as a genre filmmaker. Now, he steps up to another level with a less gory and more psychological thriller style of film, Never Let Go, in which Halle Berry stars as a mother of twin boys who is traumatically haunted by her own lifelong demons, which she passes on to them in their remote house deep in the woods.

Heretic Review: A Test of Faith Verses Logic with a Great Hugh Grant
Image
Sometimes, the scariest thing isnt the possibility of a zombie outbreak, a werewolf, or a vampire its being confronted by the flaws in everything you believe, and realizing you may be a pawn in a game you never consented to play. Writer/directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods take a big detour from their work on A Quiet Place and 65 with their latest film, Heretic, a far from prototypical horror movie. At least for the bulk of Heretics runtime, the narrative is a stage-like, elegant philosophical joust between three characters. Although the film might lean into conventional horror stylings in its third-act attempt to address the interesting questions it poses, the misstep is not enough to knock it off its relatively confident axis.

It's important to note that Beck and Woods are not necessarily using Heretic as a vehicle to say religion is bad. Instead, they utilize this story...

“A weird but devastating tale of a mother’s twisted love”: Halle Berry’s Horror Movie is Surprisingly Good Thanks to Terrific Performance From the Cast
Image
Hollywood’s favorite, Halle Berry, is all set to return to the big screens, and this time, the project she is starring in is a good one as well. Although she does hold commendable credits to her name, like that of Storm in the X-Men film series, her movies, as of late, haven’t been gaining much momentum. Like her most recent The Union, which went down with strikingly rotten ratings.

But the case with her upcoming horror-suspense movie Never Let Go seems to be different. To say the least. While the film is still a week away from hitting the big screens worldwide, the cast still sounds like they have done wonders this time around. This is because the film’s initial screenings already seem to have won fans over with massive, massive acclaim from global audiences.

Halle Berry Battles Evil Spirit in ‘Never Let Go’ Horror-Thriller Trailer
Image
Halle Berry plays a mother with twin sons battling an evil spirit closing in on their wilderness home after a world-ending event in the trailer for Lionsgate’s Never Let Go, which dropped Thursday.

In the horror-thriller, director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl) has the remote house in the woods fitted with a long ropes to enable mother and sons to remain connected at all times as unseen dangers approach.

“The evil out there is clever. One touch without a rope is all it takes,” Berry’s character tells her sons at one point in the trailer, as they commit to keep tethered to the ropes for safety and connection. But as demonic forces engulf their off-the-grid house, one of the twins questions whether evil exists.

And that breaks the family bond and triggers an all-out battle for survival. “That rope is your lifeline. Never let go. Say it,...

Halle Berry Learned How to Skin Squirrels for Spooky ‘Never Let Go’

Halle Berry can’t let go of psychological thrillers.

The Oscar winner turned up in Las Vegas on Wednesday during Lionsgate’s studio presentation to promote its new film, Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go, which brings Berry back into a genre she explored more than 20 years ago, in earlier work like Gothika. But this one pushed her to new limits.
