No, Guided By Voices Aren’t Breaking Up — They Actually Have New Music
Image
Guided by Voices super fans were stunned Monday when news broke that the long-running band had broken up. Their team, though, tells Rolling Stone the band is still going strong — so strong, in fact, that they have another album in the works. Thick Rich and Delicious drops on Halloween. No other details about the upcoming album were given.

Rumors started swirling after Bobby Bare Jr. appeared on the latest episode of Lou Barlow and his wife Adelle Barlow‘s Raw Impressions podcast. In it, Adelle mentioned she’s never seen Gbv play before,...

Guided By Voices Preview New Album With Latest Single ‘I Will Be a Monk’
Image
Two days before Guided By Voices release their new album Universe Room, the prolific indie-rock stalwarts have shared one last preview from the LP, “I Will Be a Monk.”

The 90-second salvo is prototypical Gbv, with frontman Robert Pollard and company concisely dispensing lo-fi riffs over the track, one of 17 songs on Universe Room, out Feb. 7.

“I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to...

Guided By Voices Tease New, Hi-Fi Version of Classic Track ‘I Am a Scientist’
Image
It’s a fan-favorite on Guided By Voices’ epic set list, and, now, it’s getting a makeover. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bee Thousand, Gbv has re-recorded “I Am a Scientist” in hi-fi. The song drops on streaming Wednesday, and will also be available as a limited-edition seven-inch.

“The song and the album opened the door for me and allowed me to play rock music for a living,” Gbv frontman Robert Pollard tells Rolling Stone. “To be able to do what I always wanted to do. And I’m still doing it.

Guided By Voices Return to the Stage in a Spray of Miller Lite and an Avalanche of New Songs
Image
Near the end of Guided by Voices’ beer-drenched, 60-song-plus set at Columbus, Ohio’s Athenaeum Theatre Saturday night, frontman Robert Pollard mused to the audience: “I was born on the stage. I was squirted out on the stage…”

The crowd — a motley crew of locals and super-fans who had crossed the country for the event — roared back, Miller Lite and White Claw soaking all manner of Gbv shirts commemorating scores of albums, from 2019’s Zeppelins Over China to 1994 track “Hot Freaks,” off of Bee Thousand. Bob was finally back, and,...

Guided By Voices Announce Third Album of 2020, Drop New Song ‘Mr. Child’
Image
Whenever Guided By Voices hit the road again, they’ll have three new albums to tour on: Surrender Your Poppy Field, Mirrored Aztec, and, now, Styles We Paid For. The band’s third album of 2020 drops December 11th, but you can hear the first single, “Mr. Child,” now.

“Mr. Child” is a poppy rocker about the titular character, a fun-loving Peter Pan who “sees a rainbow/sees no rain” — whose M.O. is to “roll with the punches and remain a child.” Still, there’s something ominous about the forever-boy,...

Bobby Bare Tribute: Margo Price, Steve Earle Highlight Outlaw Country Cruise Concert
When the fourth annual Outlaw Country Cruise docked in Nassau in the Bahamas on Wednesday morning, it picked up a new passenger: Country Music Hall of Fame member Bobby Bare. The 83-year-old singer, who became synonymous with the Outlaw genre via progressive albums like Bobby Bare Sings Lullabys, Legends and Lies, boarded the ship for two special concerts, one with his son Bobby Bare Jr., and another that evening as the subject of an all-star tribute.

Emceed by Deadwood actor — and perennial tribute host — W. Earl Brown, the production was a loose,...

Classic 'Heartworn Highways' Documentary Gets Sequel 39 Years Later
Dennis Price
There's a scene in the original 1976 Heartworn Highways that's become a central heartbeat of the cult film that chronicled Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Young, David Allan Coe and others as they lived, wrote music and filled their lungs with smoke and song in Nashville, Tennessee. Van Zandt is sitting in his wood-paneled kitchen in a denim shirt, plucking "Waiting Around to Die" on a cherry red guitar. His girlfriend sways, but "Uncle" Seymour Washington, a retired blacksmith born to former slaves, just nods as his eyes, circled by tree-rings of wrinkles,...
