Interview With Julian Pham: The Genesis of This Film Came From a Photo, so It Was a Lot of Building This Plane As It Flew.

One of the exciting parts to themed-film festivals is the discovery of new, local voices, like that of Julian Pham. Pham's first feature, “Owl,” speaks a story that is both Oakland-specific and universal to parent-child relationships. The narrative film follows locksmith Jean Kaneko (Marica Petrey), who returns home to take care of her ailing father. Coming home is not easy, however. As memories of her absent mother well up, her father's stubbornness ignite arguments, and her childhood friendships become entangled, she finds herself consistently frustrated – until she stumbles upon a windfall that could change all of their lives forever.

We spoke to director Julian Pham over Zoom in the advent of his world premiere at CAAMFest 2024. We talked about how to make a community out of nothing and marinating in open-ended relationships.

What inspired “Owl”?

Film Review: Owl (2024) by Julian Pham

The example of “Owl” demonstrates that filmmaking is both a lengthy and intricate process. This passion project was in production for 6 years, and towards the end, the creators had to crowdfund to complete it. The director of the movie, Julian Pham, who is also a writer, cinematographer and a dancer, wrote: “We weathered a pandemic. We kept running out of money. We've been trying to pay for it on our own all along the way, but have run out of options […]” on his debut's campaign page on Indiegogo. Although it is his first full-length feature, he can't be considered a beginner in the industry, as his short films were screened at festivals such as the New Renaissance Film Festival, Kinofilm Manchester International Short Film Festival, and Blow-Up International Arthouse Film Festival.

Colonial Pipeline, which operates the largest gasoline pipeline in the country, was forced to shut down operations on Friday due to a ransomware attack.

In a Saturday statement, Colonial Pipeline said that it “proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our It systems.”

Colonial’s pipelines are a crucial delivery system for the eastern seaboard of the United States. According to the company, their pipelines transport 2.5 million barrels per day and supply approximately 45 percent of all fuel used on the East Coast.
