James Wan and Allison Williams Offer Exciting Update on 'M3GAN' Spin-Off 'SOULM8TE'
Image
As M3GAN 2.0 brings the titular killer robot back to theaters for one more “AI goes rogue” rampage, news about the spin-off titled SOULM8TE has emerged. James Wan, franchise producer, and Allison Williams, star of M3GAN 2.0 and executive producer of SOULM8TE, have talked about the horror film which recently wrapped production. "It's like Fatal Attraction but with robots," Wan says, and well, we're sold.

Wan and Williams spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the recent release of M3GAN 2.0, and used the opportunity to also address the spin-off written and directed by Kate Dolan. The film follows a man who has lost his wife, and seeks a companion in a realistic android. As expected, the entity becomes sentient, and develops an obsession with its owner. SOULM8TE stars Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, Claudia Doumit and Oliver Cooper, among others.

How New M3GAN Spinoff Will Be A Mature Twist In The Franchise Explained By Producer
Image
M3GAN 2.0 may have only just arrived in theaters, but producer James Wan has revealed how the new SOULM8TE spinoff movie will fit within the burgeoning franchise. First announced in January 2024, the upcoming spinoff has been touted as a more mature take on the AI world first established in 2022’s original M3GAN.

Written and directed by Kate Dolan, SOULM8TE's plot will follow a grieving husband who attempts to cope with the death of his wife by purchasing an AI companion. Featuring a cast that includes Claudia Doumit (The Boys), David Rysdahl (Oppenheimer), Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise), and Oliver Cooper (Californication), the spinoff is set to arrive in theaters on January 9, 2026.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wan confirmed that while SOULM8TE is set in the same world, it follows a more adult story separate from the PG-13 constraints of the M3GAN films. Comparing it to the erotic thrillers of the 1990s,...

James Wan, 48, Claims the 'M3GAN' Spin-Off Will Be "More Adult"
Image
With M3GAN 2.0 currently playing in theaters, the sequel to the 2022 hit, fans have high hopes for what comes next: the upcoming M3GAN spin-off, SOULM8TE. Scheduled for early next year, the follow-up was announced in development in June 2024, with Kate Dolan directing and rewriting the screenplay, based on a previous draft written by Rafael Jordan. Furthermore, M3GAN co-producer James Wan will return in the same capacity through his company Atomic Monster, and unsurprisingly, he has grand plans for SOULM8TE, which he recently shared with EW, teasing a more grown-up perspective.

In SOULM8TE, slated to release in theaters in January 2026, David Rysdahl plays a man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. He attempts to create a truly sentient partner but inadvertently turns a supposedly harmless love-bot into a deadly soulmate. Evil Dead Rise star Lily Sullivan portrays the android, while...

‘SOULM8TE’: James Wan’s ‘M3GAN’ Spinoff Is Inspired by Only Erotic Thriller That Almost Won Best Picture
Image
James Wan is all set to take the M3GAN universe to a whole new direction. With M3GAN 2.0 charging in theaters this week, fans who love the killer AI doll won’t have to wait long because an R-rated spinoff titled SOULM8TE is already on the way (via Entertainment Weekly).

Kate Dolan directs the upcoming installment and will swap out the teen-friendly terror story for a much darker and sexier tone, something that might remind you of the 1987 erotic thriller titled Fatal Attraction. So, let’s look at more details about SOULM8TE and what Wan has to say about it!

M3GAN was hailed by reviewers and the audience because it had a mix of campy horror, tech, and anxiety. But now SOULM8TE is ready to explore the adult parts of the same universe.

Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
SOULM8TE: a “Fatal Attraction with robots” set in the M3GAN universe
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
Back in April, Blumhouse Productions spent some time in the spotlight during the Universal panel at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was there to witness an early preview of SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe” that is set to reach theatres on January 2, 2026. Bumbray reported, “Seems similar to Companion. Centers on a sexbot that becomes so obsessed with her “owner” that she kills anyone close to him and goes on a murder spree. Looks more violent (and kinkier) than M3GAN but has the same humor. When a woman she’s about to kill says ‘Women aren’t supposed to be pitted against each other,’ she answers, ‘Don’t start that girl power shit with me.’” Now that M3GAN 2.0 is about to make its way out into the world, Entertainment Weekly was able to dig up some more information on SOULM8TE,...

James Wan Says ‘M3GAN’ Spin-Off ‘SOULM8TE’ is “Like ‘Fatal Attraction’ But with Robots”
Image
With M3GAN 2.0 hitting theaters, producer James Wan is looking ahead to the next stage of evolution: SOULM8TE, a spin-off movie that functions as an R-rated erotic thriller.

“M3GAN, obviously, dabbles in the PG-13 world, the younger demographic. We always felt like there might be a more adult story to tell, and that’s really what SOULM8TE is,” Wan tells EW. “SOULM8TE is basically set in the same AI world but seen through a more grown-up perspective, one that embraces all the great erotic thrillers from the ’90s. It’s like Fatal Attraction but with robots.”

Currently in post-production, the film follows a man who acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. He attempts to create a truly sentient partner but inadvertently turns a supposedly harmless love-bot into a deadly soulmate.

“It’s already happening in parts of the world. These exist,...

M3GAN 2.0 Vs M3GAN Rt Scores ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

M3GAN 2.0, the eagerly awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed sci-fi horror hit M3GAN (2022), is all set to hit the big screen on June 27, 2025, including Indian cinemas. The first film was well-received by critics and audiences alike, but is the sequel an upgrade (better rated) over the original? Let’s compare the Rotten Tomatoes scores of both films to find out.

M3GAN vs M3GAN 2.0 – Rotten Tomatoes Scores Compared

While the original film earned a highly impressive 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, its upcoming sequel currently holds a much lower rating of 65%. As the time of writing, the sequel is trailing behind the original by a staggering margin of 28%. While the score could shift slightly as more reviews come in, a major change seems unlikely. It remains to be seen whether the audience will agree with critics. The verdict will be out very soon.

New 'M3GAN' Collectible Doll Revealed Ahead of Action Horror Sequel
Image
Universal and Blumhouse seem to be going all-out in the marketing campaign for their latest horror movie sequel, M3GAN 2.0. Released in January 2023, the original M3GAN film was a sleeper hit at the beginning of the year, grossing an impressive $181 million worldwide against a $12 million budget. The campy horror film would quickly get a sequel greenlit, and now M3GAN 2.0 is shaping up to be an even more ridiculous film in the best way possible. To coincide with the movie's release, the marketing team behind the project have unveiled some unsettling merchandise, including a doll based on the titular character.

Mattel Creations has partnered with Universal and Blumhouse to release a special edition Monster High Skullector M3GAN doll, based on her appearance in the first movie. The fashion doll franchise Monster High has become well-known for its clever renditions of classic monsters in the form of collectible dolls, making...

M3GAN 2.0's Final Trailer Teases the Killer Doll’s Path to Redemption (& Her Next Viral Dance)
Image
The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back, and she's been given an upgrade. The final trailer for M3GAN 2.0 has dropped, showing just how the upcoming sequel will take more than a page or two from the sci-fi classic Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Just like James Cameron's 1991 sequel, M3GAN 2.0 looks set to ditch its horror roots in favor of an action-focused story that sees the killer robot go from antagonist to ally, a move that is as surprising as it was when Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 flipped over to the good side to protect a young John Connor in Judgment Day. In M3GAN 2.0, the title character's programming to protect Cady will see her help her creator, Gemma, in taking down the new rogue robot killer Amelia, played by Ahsoka breakout Ivanna Sakhno, who's out to get them. Check out the final trailer for M3GAN 2.0 below.

'M3GAN 2.0' Gets Popcorn Bucket and Other Merch at Alamo Drafthouse
Image
Alamo Drafthouse has revealed a chilling collection of merchandise for M3GAN 2.0that will be available to pick up when Gerard Johnstone's horror sequel boots up in theaters on June 27, while supplies last. Among the items is an unsettling new popcorn bucket that really hits the nail on the head with its design, as fans of the killer doll franchise who have longed for their own Model Three Generative Android (M3GAN for short) now have the next best thing: a plastic snack vessel that resembles the murderous main antagonist of the film series.

Collider shared the first image (seen below) of the epic new popcorn bucket, which is exclusive to Alamo and designed by Grace Svoboda, though be warned: it is the stuff of nightmares. The item is modeled on the M3GAN doll's head and the top half of her face cracks open to reveal the sweet or salty treat,...

M3GAN spinoff SOULM8TE sets new, slightly later, release date
Image
Less than a year after it was first announced, Universal has revealed that M3GAN spinoff film SOULM8TE has a new release date. Instead of releasing on January 2, 2026 as was originally planned, the film will now come out a week later, on January 9, 2026, via Bloody Disgusting.

SOULM8TE is being directed by Kate Dolan, known for her creepy Irish psychological horror film You Are Not My Mother. Dolan is also penning the script, based on a story by horror icon James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan. Wan will also produce under his Atomic Monster alongside frequent collaborator Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions.

Described as a sci-fi erotic thriller, SOULM8TE is about a man who purchases an android to use as a coping mechanism after his wife passes away. The plot isn't exactly an original one, as we've seen similar in movies like this year's Companion, Subservience, and even in the series Black Mirror.

Evil Dead Star's Retro Erotic M3GAN Spinoff Gets a New Release Date
Image
The M3GAN franchise is set to expand beyond the titular robotic doll in 2026. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little longer now before they can see SOULM8TE in theaters.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Universal Pictures has delayed SOULM8TE by exactly one week, moving the erotic thriller spinoff from Jan. 2, 2026, to Jan. 9, 2026. The move means that SOULM8TE no longer has zero competition during its opening weekend, as the Jason Statham action movie Mutiny will also be released that day. While January is typically seen as dumping ground for studios since it's in between the holiday and spring blockbuster seasons, 2026 is so far packed with several anticipated movies, such as Sony's 28 Years Later sequel The Bone Temple (Jan. 16), Chris Pratt's sci-fi thriller Mercy (Jan. 23), and Sam Raimi's return to horror Send Help (Jan. 30).

What Is SOULM8TE About?

'This Isn’t Going to Be the Movie That I Pitched': Nia DaCosta Shares Regrets About The Marvels
Image
The Marvels, directed and co-written by Nia DaCosta, was a box office bomb for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a shake to the foundations of what had previously been an untouchable franchise.

Now, DaCosta has revealed she wasn't entirely happy with the process of making the wildly expensive MCU movie. Speaking at the Storyhouse screenwriting festival (via Deadline), she gave fans a glimpse at what seemed at times like a difficult experience for her. "They [Marvel] had a date, and they were prepping certain things, and you just have to lean into the process hardcore,” DaCosta said during a conversation with Kate Dolan. “The way they make those films is very different to the way, ideally, I would make a film, so you just have to lean into the process and hope for the best. The best didn’t happen this time, but you kind of have to trust in the machine.

The Marvels | Nia DaCosta says the film wasn’t what she pitched originally
Nia DaCosta
Nia DaCosta has been reflecting on her experience on directing The Marvels for Marvel Studios, which came with its ups and downs.

Director Nia DaCosta tipped her toes into the MCU with 2023’s The Marvels – her ambitious but flawed sequel to Captain Marvel. The film received middling reviews and was a box office disappointment, failing to break even in cinemas.

Speaking at Storyline, the second annual screenwriting festival in Dublin, DaCosta reflected on her time making The Marvels. As you might have guessed, DaCosta was a small part of a huge filmmaking machine and it came with certain expectations.

“They had a date, and they were prepping certain things, and you just have to lean into the process hardcore,” the director said in a chat with filmmaker Kate Dolan, as reported by Deadline. “The way they make those films is very different to the way, ideally, I would make a film,...

SOULM8TE: a more violent, kinkier film set in the M3GAN universe
Amie Donald and Jenna Davis in M3GAN 2.0 (2025)
Last night, Blumhouse Productions spent some time in the spotlight during the Universal panel at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas. A major focus of their time on stage was the sequels they have coming out this year – M3GAN 2.0, which is set to reach theatres on June 27th; The Black Phone 2 follows on October 17th; then Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will help wrap up 2025 with its December 5th release. But they also shared a preview of SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe” that is set to reach theatres on January 2, 2026.

The M3GAN movies and SOULM8TE come from the recently merged companies Atomic Monster (headed up by James Wan) and Blumhouse Productions (headed up by Jason Blum).

‘M3GAN’ Spinoff ‘SOULM8TE’ Debuts Sexy Trailer With Romantic Companion Gone Wrong
Image
M3GAN spinoff SOULM8TE revealed its steamy first footage at CinemaCon, courtesy of producers James Wan and James Blum.

The Blumhouse CEO noted that the pair “share a demented sensibility.” Wan noted of the title character in M3GAN, “She kicked open a door to twisted ideas we can explore together. What if we can design a perfect partner for grown-ups?”

Wan then teased the film’s “adult M3GAN,” and joked, “What could possibly go wrong?”

The trailer, which has not yet been publicly shared, featured Lily Sullivan as an AI-powered companion hired by a grieving man (David Rysdahl). As might be expected, the title character takes things a bit too far.

“Tell me you love me,” Sullivan says in the footage. “Nobody will ever know you like I do.” Later, she asks, “Have I been a bad girl?”

When facing off with a female rival, she quips, “Don’t try that girl-power shit with me.

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Trailer Brings the Mayhem as Blumhouse Unveils New ‘M3gan 2.0’ and ‘Black Phone 2’ Footage at CinemaCon

Jason Blum’s house runneth over at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Horror label Blumhouse brought four new films to tantalize global theater owners on Tuesday, which will roll out steadily through 2025.

The titles feature homicidal robot girls, murderous animatronic mascots, a jacked and terrifying (and undead?) Ethan Hawke and a sentient sex doll. It’s what we love and expect from the producer of “Whiplash” and “BlacKkKlansman.”

This is the first time Blumhouse has presented to exhibitors since merging with horror company Atomic Monster, founded by “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” mastermind James Wan.

Here’s a rundown of the Blumhouse wares:

Five Night’s at Freddy’s 2

Blum himself kicked off his section of the Universal presentation dressed as the titular animatronic bear, Freddy. He pumped up the crowd of exhibitors by revealing that “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” will debut exclusively in theaters in December.

Frewaka Review: Chilling Irish Folk Horror Wants To Eat Your Children [Panic Fest 2025]
Irish Filmmaker Aislinn Clarke returns with another dose of eerie Irish Horror in her sophomore feature Frewaka, a story about family, and marriage….and monsters that want to eat your children. Clarke’s debut feature, a 16mm Found Footage chiller entitled The Devil’s Doorway (2018) introduced the horror community to her ability to craft a good scare, but it’s her short film Childer (2017) (still one of my personal favourites) that I think really sets the scene for the atmospheric dread of Frewaka. Which is to say that if you’re a fan of brooding unsettling Horror, creepy shadows whispering from the recess of the crawl space, or ominous goats(!), you might want to invest in a bright night light before braving the rural superstitious nightmare that is Frewaka.

She’s Back: Watch the Grammys Teaser for ‘M3GAN 2.0’
Image
Universal and Blumhouse brought a big surprise to the Grammys tonight, debuting the first official teaser for M3GAN 2.0, which is slaying its way into theaters on June 27, 2025.

The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back.

And this time she’s not alone….

The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster, Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone—reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.

“Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Every Studio Film Directed by Female Filmmakers Coming Out in 2025 and 2026
Image
The question comes up whenever we publish this list: Why only studio movies? Isn’t this IndieWire?

But here’s the thinking: For most moviegoers and for many filmmakers, helming a studio-backed film is the pinnacle of a career, or at least the pinnacle of visibility. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director. It’s not the end-all, be-all. It may not even be a goal for many filmmakers.

By looking at this portion of the release calendar (and all the box office bucks that come with it), we can get a sense of who Hollywood is letting into its most rarefied spaces. And that matters.

As we’ve too often discovered in the making of this list, that landscape isn’t really changing. While the most recent USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study does not quite show a decline in inclusion,...

M3GAN 2.0 Still Reveals M3GAN's New Look As Director Teases Franchise's Evolution Ahead Of "Erotic" Spin-Off
Image
M3GAN was a bigger hit than expected in 2022 and Blumhouse is acting quickly to capitalise on the movie's box office success. Along with a sequel about the killer doll titled M3GAN 2.0, an erotic-thriller spin-off, SOULM8TE, is also in the works.

So, you could call it an all-new MCU (M3GAN Cinematic Universe). "I am terrified to imagine what that would mean. What is the Thanos equivalent?" star Allison Williams tells Entertainment Weekly (via FearHQ.com). "Let's just keep going as long as they're interesting and each one has its own story to tell."

While plot details are being kept a secret ahead of the sequel's release in theaters next year, director Gerard Johnstone teases, "I had actually a different idea for the ending of M3GAN, which would've been interesting but probably not as satisfying. The good thing about doing a sequel is I got the chance to expand on that idea into a longer narrative.
