How PBS Plans to Celebrate the American Semiquincentennial in 2026 (Exclusive)
Image
As the American federal government is turning its back on PBS, PBS is celebrating the republic.

PBS is going all-in on America’s Semiquincentennial in 2026. You, of course, know what that word means: the country’s 250th birthday. From June 27-July 4, 2026, PBS will run an entire week of programming celebrating the milestone, which it is calling “the largest national and local engagement effort in its history.” A host of programming in the months leading up to that week is also in the works.

How much of it will be funded by the tax dollars of viewers remains an open question.

The PBS America @ 250 concept was first announced in 2024; The Hollywood Reporter can now announce the details. The initiative will be headlined by Ken Burns’ next big doc, the six-part, 12-hour The American Revolution, but history buffs — and Burns buffs — already knew about that one.

New today are its companion series.

‘Agatha Christie’: Lucy Worsley Digs Into the ‘Mystery Queen’ With New Series
Image
“I’m not interested in telling fairy tales about nice ladies doing nice things,” British cultural and literary historian Lucy Worsley says cheekily. Surely English mystery novelist Agatha Christie, the subject of her fascinating three-part series, Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen, would agree. “The reason she’s a great writer is you can read her books purely as entertainment but also as a biting critique of society,” says Worsley, who examined the creator of household-name sleuths Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple in her 2022 biography Agatha Christie: An Elusive Woman. (Credit: Tom Hayward/PBS) Here she takes a chronological approach to the life of the author, born Agatha Miller in 1890 to a wealthy, quirky family. It begins with her solitary childhood at a spooky Victorian villa and leads to atmospheric spots like Egyptian temples. Worsley conducts interviews — one with Christie’s great-grandson — and scrutinizes photos and documents (twist:...

Image
BBC Arts has unveiled two new shows exploring the rich legacy of author Arthur Conan Doyle and his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes.

Doyle came to hate Holmes and killed him off in print only to be forced to revive him upon public demand. The series follows in the footsteps of “Agatha Christie: Lucy Worsley on the Mystery Queen,” with Worsley unearthing Holmes’ origins in Doyle’s early life as a medical student, unpicking his early stories and revealing the dark underbelly of late Victorian Britain – from drug use to true crime. What Even Is a Cunk?!
Image
Being stupid, as the saying goes, is like being dead – you’re oblivious either way, so it’s only really a problem for the people around you. The people around TV documentarian Philomena Cunk therefore, have a major problem.

At the end of January this year, America met Cunk properly for the first time when new show Cunk on Earth arrived on Netflix US. A documentary series follow-up to 2018’s Cunk on Britain, it’s an ambitious attempt to sum up the history of humankind in five half-hour episodes, made even more ambitious by the fact that it’s presented by a total moron.

A deliberate total moron, let’s be clear. Some apparently still aren’t clear that Philomena Cunk is not a real TV presenter but a character played by British comedy actor Diane Morgan. When Morgan appeared on US chat show Late Night With Seth Meyers earlier this year,...

Wheelhouse UK Wins First Commission With Channel 5’s ‘Puzzling’

Jimmy Kimmel and Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse has secured its first UK commission, a Channel 5 quiz format produced with ITV Studios-backed 12 Yard. In Puzzling [working title], broadcaster and historian Lucy Worsley will challenge Britain’s brightest minds across five rounds on language, calculation, lateral thinking, visual intelligence and memory. In a dramatic plot twist, the winning team then turn on each other to be named the ‘Best of the Best’ and earn a place in the series Grand Final, where the winner will be crowned. The series is the first revealed commission for Wheelhouse’s UK arm, which is helmed by former Deal or No Deal producer Glenn Hugill, who set it up earlier this year. 12 Yard is co-producer. Channel 5 rarely dabbles in quiz formats but recently picked up Eggheads, another high-end quizshow that used to air on BBC Two.

Why is everyone in The Crown so sexy?
Image
That John Major is one mighty hunk of man-meat,” said no one but Edwina Currie probably. Watch The Crown this season, though, and you’ll be foaming at the mouth in minutes over Britain’s most boring Pm. See, Major – who absolutely, categorically did not advise Prince Charles on whether to force his mother’s abdication in 1991, thank you very much – is played in The Crown by Jonny Lee Miller, an actor so flagrantly good-looking that even dressing him up in geeky spectacles and a floppy grey wig can’t extinguish the heat.

Inappropriate sexiness is The Crown’s métier. Here is a show that thought the perfect person to play famed demonoid Margaret Thatcher was Gillian Anderson, knowledge of whose overt, indubitable sex appeal has been passed down the generations like some kind of erotic folk tale. Prince Charles has been played by both the prolifically allergic-to-clothes Josh O’Connor and,...

BBC Eyes Plan To Make BBC Four A Global Subscription Service
Image
The BBC has said it is considering transforming BBC Four into a global subscription service amid continued uncertainty about the television channel’s future in the UK.

In its 76-page annual plan published on Wednesday, the BBC revealed: “We are exploring potential commercial opportunities for BBC Four to become a new global subscription service that takes our strengths in specialist factual to the world stage.”

The British broadcaster offered no further detail, but it’s clear that it believes there could be value in adding the network to BBC Studios’ existing portfolio of international channels, including BBC Earth and BBC Brit. BBC Four is known for its experiments in slow TV and high-end history documentaries, such as Lucy Worsley’s Royal Photo Album.

The plans also help explain the surprise sideways move of Cassian Harrison, who this month vacated his role as BBC Four channel editor to take on an...
