Exclusive: Britton Rizzio’s boutique management firm Curate Management, focused on creators in film and TV, has announced its acquisition of Zipa Entertainment, the Mexico City-based management company founded by Sofia Escallon. Escallon now joins Curate as a Partner, and will spearhead the company’s efforts to expand internationally.
Zipa’s focus on bilingual and bi-cultural showrunners, writers and directors working in Latin America, with the potential to cross over to other markets, broadens Curate’s value proposition and significantly increases its scope of representation. The UK Jewish Film Festival winners have been revealed. The Best Debut Feature Award has gone to Leona, directed by Isaac Cherem. The Spanish-language Mexican film, which received its UK premiere at the event, follows a young Jewish woman from Mexico City who finds herself torn between her family and her forbidden love with a non-Jewish man. The Dorfman Best Film Award went to Polish film Dolce Fine Giornata, directed by Jacek Borcuch. Pic charts how the stable family life of a poetess begins to fall apart as she makes a controversial speech. The movie beat out other titles Flawless, Jojo Rabbit, My Polish Honeymoon, Stripped and The Unorthodox. The Best Documentary Award winner has been announced as Advocate, directed by Philippe Bellaiche and Rachel Leah Jones. The film is a look at the life and work of Jewish-Israeli lawyer Lea Tsemel who has represented political prisoners for nearly 50 years.

Coming off the success of “Sharp Objects” and “Big Little Lies,” director Jean-Marc Vallée spent last week at one of Mexico’s most secluded and luxurious destinations.
Far from kicking up his heels on vacation to bask in the success of both of his HBO series, the Oscar-nominated director was a mentor and honoree at the ninth annual Gnp ArteCareyes Film & Arts festival in the small town of Careyes, nestled on the Jalisco coast between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta.
The Careyes Creation Lab selects a group of rising Mexican and Latin American filmmakers to be guided by role models such as Vallée and Emmy-winning director Joan Darling (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), who tutor them in their quest to become the next Alfonso Cuarón.
