Masterchef: United Tastes of America: Did The Midwest Bring the Heat and the Heart?
Loyd Grossman in Masterchef (1990)
Is Midwest the Best?

As a Northeast gal, I'll have to stand beside my region.

And we kicked things off nicely during the premiere.

Even though I didn't see my people, I heard my people. Buffalonians will chant "Let's Go Buffalo" anywhere; deal with it.

Nevertheless, I don't mind putting some respect on the Midwest, and they brought all the heart and the heat from the Heartland during MasterChef Season 13 Episode 2.

Fifty Countries in a Trench Coat

Masterchef Tastes of America understands the assignment and understands it well, putting some recognition on the sheer diversity in food spanning across the States.

How does the saying go? The US is like 50 countries in a trenchcoat, and there's no better indicator of that than our food profile, which not only varies from region to region but state to state and damn near county to county.

And that's what makes this latest season of Masterchef a sheer delight,...

Image
By the conclusion of the 22nd Food Network South Beach Food & Wine Festival (Sobewff), 450 chefs had participated in 110-plus events attended by more than 60,000 food and beverage industry professionals, foodie fans, fine-dining fanatics, lovers of burgers, tacos and fried chicken, and the culinary-curious masses on the hunt for tasty bites and sips and a Guy Fieri selfie.

The wizard behind this culinary oz in the sand is Lee Brian Schrager, arguably one of the most influential people in Miami’s food scene as the founder of Sobewff and chief communications officer and senior vice president of social responsibility for Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, the largest liquor distributor in the United States.

Every winter, he makes magic happen in the Magic City as the event has transformed into being as much about culinary television, book and endorsement deals and celebrity chef sightings as it is about wine and food.

Underrated MasterChef Contestants Who Were Eliminated Too Early
Image
There have been hundreds of home cooks who have competed on MasterChef, but while some competitors overstayed their welcomes, others were sent home too early. The American version of MasterChef has retained a strong fan base since the series kicked off in 2010, and over the past twelve years, 20 home cooks have won the hefty 250,000 grand prize between MasterChef and its spin-off, MasterChef Junior. Known for its consistency and generally-wholesome content, MasterChef has been judged by co-creator and Hell's Kitchen host Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, Joe Bastianich, Christina Tosi, and Aarón Sanchez. Several world-renowned chefs have also appeared on MasterChef, such as Wolfgang Puck and Masaharu Morimoto.

Although Hell's Kitchen and other popular cooking competitions feature contestants with extensive culinary backgrounds, MasterChef is special in that its cast members are regular people with ordinary professions. Naturally, this means that while many MasterChef contestants have excelled at difficult individual and team challenges,...

The Best MasterChef Seasons To Rewatch (& The Worst) Ranked
Image
The American version of MasterChef has wowed fans and given a chance for home cooks to shine for over a decade, but while some MasterChef seasons are remembered fondly, others can do without a rewatch. Since MasterChef season 1 premiered in 2010 with Hells Kitchen's Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot at the reins, the series has expanded into a franchise with spin-offs like MasterChef Junior and MasterChef Celebrity Showdown. Over the years, hundreds of people with no professional experience in the kitchen have grown from basic home cooks to qualified chefs, with some alumni having gone on to open their own businesses.

Most recently, a group of former contestants returned for a second shot at the title and 250,000 grand prize when MasterChef season 12, titled MasterChef season 12, premiered in mid-2022. With Gordon and Joe now joined by Aarón Sanchez, MasterChef season 12 was the series' latest success despite some detrimental mistakes made.

The Worst Mistakes Made By MasterChef Contestants Ranked
Image
There have been hundreds of beautifully delicious dishes served throughout the years on MasterChef, but some contestants have made such detrimental mistakes that they have gone down in MasterChef history for the wrong reasons. Since MasterChef premiered back in 2010 with Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and Joe Bastianich as judges, the franchise has expanded dramatically with dozens of spin-offs and international renditions. Unlike Gordon's equally popular series Hell's Kitchen, MasterChef has featured wholesome home cooks who not just support one another, but are also faced with some seriously impressive challenges despite their lack of experience.

That being said, however, it's not rare for home cooks to fail mystery box challenges and pressure tests on MasterChef, especially as the show operates under a strict time frame. While some contestants have risen to the occasion and wowed the judges with their creations, others have crashed and burned. Now that MasterChef season 13 has been greenlit by Fox,...
