A new made-in-Canada science fiction thriller is on the horizon, and Et Canada has an exclusive clip and a first look at the posters for “Simulant”.

Directed by April Mullen and filmed in Hamilton, Ontario, the movie boasts an impressive cast including Canadians Robbie Amell and Simu Liu, in addition to Jordana Brewster (of “The Fast and the Furious” franchise) and Sam Worthington (“Avatar: The Way of Water”).

Set in a not-distant future in which androids walk among humans, the film focuses on Simulants, physically indistinguishable from humans while implanted with all the memories and mannerisms of their human counterparts.

This Canadian production will be in theaters in Canada in April, then in the US this summer. A humanoid A.I.'s attempt to win over a widow's heart places it in the path of a government agent trying to stop the rise of machine consciousness. It's about an android that is reprogrammed to try and be more human to win back his ex-lover, but this puts him in the cross-hairs of the Artificial Intelligence Compliance Enforcement (Aice) agency. Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Raúl Castillo (The Inspection) will star in their next horror movie.

The film, being described as a psychological horror-thriller, “follows a realtor who must survive a night of terror when a deranged client shows up at her open house.”

Kinogo Pictures and Mad Descent are behind Open House, which is coming soon.

Exclusive: Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Raúl Castillo (The Inspection) will topline Open House — a recently-wrapped psychological horror-thriller written and directed by the duo of David Charbonier and Justin Powell (The Djinn).

The film from Kinogo Pictures and Mad Descent, which shot in Los Angeles, follows a realtor who must survive a night of terror when a deranged client shows up at her open house. Ryan Scaringe (Eradication) produced along with Charbonier and Powell, with Amy Lippens and Jilbert Daniel being joined as EPs by Sanz and Castillo. UTA Independent Film Group is repping worldwide sales.

Charbonier and Powell made their feature directorial debut with 2020’s The Boy Behind the Door — a critically acclaimed horror-thriller starring This Is Us‘ Lonnie Chavis that was released by Shudder after premiering at Fantastic Fest. The pair subsequently wrote, directed and exec produced The Djinn, a supernatural horror released by IFC Midnight in 2021.

Three Point Capital has closed on a $100 million revolving credit facility with Mitsubishi Ufj Financial Group (Mufg). The independent film financier, which was acquired last year by Forest Road, has also rebranded as Tpc.

Forest Road is the majority owner of distributor Vertical Entertainment.

David Gendron, Tpc president and co-founder, said the new facility — which closed last month — will allow it to finance either partly or, more often now, entirely, about 60 films a year with budgets in the $1 million to $20 million range, with a “sweet spot” of $4-$5 million.

Tpc, which launched in 2009 and helped finance films including The Butler and Manchester By The Sea, is fully financing upcoming Abandoned, with Vertical, as well as Clerks III and Mel Gibson-starrer On The Line. It’s a financier of thriller Hello Stranger with Sam Worthington, Jordana Brewster, Robbie Amell and Alicia Sanz, currently in post-production.

Although Sim Evan appears like human Evan in every way, Faye does not feel the same love for Sim Evan as it does for her. Sim Evan tries to win Faye back while at the same time being on the run from a government agent chasing down SIMs who have become “conscious” and could potentially be a threat to humankind.
