Exclusive: Emily the Criminal Spirit Award Supporting Performance nominee Theo Rossi is set to make his directorial debut with the upcoming action/heist film Shell Game.

Based on an original script from Rossi, Tommy DeNucci and James Crewe, the pic will tell the story of a notorious crew of thieves who reunite after years apart. They must navigate old grudges, new enemies and a high-stakes heist that could set them up for life — or destroy them for good.

Rossi tells Deadline, “some of my favorite films ever made have been about how relationships navigate and are tested in the underworld of society. This film gives us the opportunity to explore that even more through these deeply flawed characters trying to find their way in a pressure-filled world they inhabit.”

Introduced in Robert Hall’s 2009 slasher Laid to Rest, intimidating villain Chromeskull cut a striking figure onscreen, with multi-pointed shark blades in each hand and a shiny skull mask sat atop his pitch black suit. Co-created by the man behind the mask, Nick Principe, Chromeskull has been absent from screens for the last fourteen years, though Hall attempted to craft a trilogy capper with Laid to Rest: Exhumed before his untimely death in 2021.

Also joining the Verdi Productions pic, that just wrapped production, in key roles is William Forsythe (The Devil Rejects) and Vanessa Angel (Kingpin). The Roaring Game centers on Rickey, a high school janitor who loses everything when his girlfriend, Kelly, is selected to play hockey for Team USA and compete in the World Games.

To win her back, Rickey creates a misfit curling team and uses his sweeping skills to compete for gold and complete a comic quest for redemption that captivates the nation.

Rourke is best known for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, which earned him Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Former New England Patriots tight-end Gronkowski has acting credits that include The Clapper, Entourage, Boss Level and the buddy comedy The Instigators.

Chad Verdi’s Vmi Releasing has acquired the opioid crisis drama “Junction,” which is the directorial debut of “How to Make It in America” actor Bryan Greenberg. Greenberg stars in the film along with Josh Peck, Sophia Bush and his wife Jamie Chung.

Under Vmi releasing, “Junction” is slated for a theatrical and VOD release on Jan. 24. As per the press release, the film description reads: “[‘Junction’] chronicles the modern-day opioid crisis in America from three different points of view: the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, a doctor and a patient. Each character will have to come face to face with the decisions they have made and their role in the epidemic.” Also starring in the film are Griffin Dunne, Ashley Madekwe and Ryan Eggold.

If I had a dollar for every time I predicted the twists and turns in the new movie The Collective, I wouldn’t be even close to being a millionaire, for there are not that many twists here in the first place. Directed by Tom DeNucci, The Collective is like a stepping stone for the performers to showcase their skills, and the film unfolds like it’s well aware of that fact. The film has a decent star cast with actors like Don Johnson, Paul Ben-Victor, and Tyrese Gibson added to the mix who do a good job, but it is Lucas Till who gets to play the title role. I should add that he falters badly as he is unable to add to the stakes of this action thriller. See, that’s what Tom Cruise does well in the “Mission Impossible” franchise. Exclusive: Rhode Island-based production company Verdi Productions has halted pre-production on the next feature film on the company’s slate, a biopic of Muhammad Ali Jr., due to the impending SAG strike.

According to producer Chad A. Verdi (Bleed For This), the indie movie was due to enter principal photography on September 1 in Rhode Island with cast attached, but will now be pushed to late 2024. Tom DeNucci directs.

The movie will chart the story of Ali Jr. who has struggled to live in his legendary father’s shadow, dealing with bullying, abandonment, drug addiction and family issues. More recently, Ali Jr. has found greater peace with himself, his former relationship, his father and his own children.

Verdi recently produced a documentary on the same subject.

Vault director Tom DeNucci’s new film Johnny & Clyde is usually referred to as a “crime thriller”, but we’ve also heard that the story shifts gears to become a “balls-to-the-wall slasher/horror” flick. Since I have been a dedicated slasher fan since the 1980s, I’m looking forward to checking it out when it receives a theatrical and VOD release this Friday, May 5th. With the release just a few days away, a trailer for Johnny & Clyde has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Fremantle Boosts Revenue By 25% For Rtl Group

Hand of God outfit Fremantle increased its revenue by 25% last year to €1.9Bn ($2.1Bn) as owner Rtl Group, the European media conglomerate, recorded a 10% turnover rise to €6.6Bn ($7.3Bn) and a profit boost of 35% to €1.1Bn ($1.2Bn). Rtl this morning said it is making progress on Fremantle’s growth plan, following four acquisitions in the past year including, most recently, the purchase of 70% of respected Italian producer Lux Vide, along with 12 Nent Group production labels. Fremantle put 81 drama productions into production across the year and scored hits with the likes of Paolo Sorrentino’s Oscar-nominated Hand of God for Netflix. Exclusive: Bleed For This producer Chad A. Verdi is lining up movie biopics of Muhammad Ali Jr. and Lennox Lewis’s former manager Kellie Maloney.

Verdi is already in production on two documentaries about the subjects and next year is planning to make the two feature dramas.

Verdi, an executive-producer on Martin Scorsese movies The Irishman and Silence, is making his directorial debut on documentary My Father Muhammad Ali: The Untold Story alongside co-director Tom DeNucci (Vault).

The doc, which is said to have full buy-in from its subject, will chart Ali Jr.’s struggle growing up as the son of “the greatest”. The film will tell the story of the champion boxer through the eyes of his only biological son and explore themes of bullying, abandonment, addiction, family, and finding peace.

Exclusive: Screen Media Ventures has acquired all North American rights to the boxing doc Lennox Lewis: The Untold Story and plans a Q4 launch.

The documentary, originally titled Tough Love: The Lennox Lewis Documentary, was set to premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival before the fest was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The film chronicles the childhood, rise and domination of Lewis, the last boxer to hold the undisputed heavyweight title. Narrated by Dr. Dre, it features interviews with the fighter’s toughest opponents, including Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

We spoke to Lewis about the film earlier this year and debuted the film’s first trailer.

Directed by Rick Lazes and Seth Koch, the feature was written by Josh Dubin and Koch. Producers are The Irishman executive producer Chad A. Verdi, Rick Lazes, Nick Koskoff and Tom DeNucci. Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Joker) and Michelle Verdi (Wander) are executive producers.
