The Prosecutor's Donnie Yen On Balancing Courtroom Drama With "Extravagant" Action In Return To Director's Chari
Image
Donnie Yen is continuing his return to the director's chair after a 20-year break with The Prosecutor. Having started his career as a stuntman in Hong Kong, Yen first began finding success with the TV adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury, as well as choreographing and starring in numerous Hollywood action movies, including Blade II. Though having worked as an action director multiple times throughout his career, Yen's list of full directorial efforts is relatively smaller, ranging from 1997's Legend of the Wolf to 2004's Protégé de la Rose Noire, after which he wouldn't direct again until 2023's Sakra.

The Prosecutor sees Yen reteaming with Ip Man franchise writer Edmong Wong and producer Raymond Wong, also centering himself as lead character, Fok Chi-ho, a police detective who, after a gang leader is acquitted of his crimes, elects to become a public prosecutor instead. After joining the Department of Justice,...

The Last Dance Review: Cultural Reflections Through Humor and Drama
Image
In Anselm Chan’s The Last Dance, Dayo Wong plays Dominic Ngai, a wedding planner whose life falls apart after the pandemic forces him into the funeral business. This change not only serves as a plot device but also reflects how fragile life is and how we can end up going in unexpected directions during crises.

The film uses nonlinear action telling, combining flashbacks and present-day interactions to increase our understanding of Dominic’s struggles. This method is reminiscent of modern film directors like Noah Baumbach, who use complicated character interactions to explore adult complexities. In traditional stories, the difference between happy weddings and sad funerals creates a compelling tension that makes the story more interesting.

The relationship between Dominic and Master Man Kwok (Michael Hui), a traditionalist whose strict adherence to Taoist practices clashes with Dominic’s more contemporary methods, is at the heart of the narrative. This conflict...

‘The Last Dance’ records Hong Kong’s biggest ever single-day box office for a local film
Image

This includes $1.1m (Hk$8.6m) – or $1.2m (Hk$9.18m) inclusive of Macau – on November 16 alone, surpassing 2016’s Cold War 2 to take the biggest single-day box office for a Hong Kong and Chinese-language film.

The data is provided by Hong Kong Box Office, a...

Short Film Review: Life of Cloud (2023) by Wylie Chan
Image
There is a common saying about people living in their dreams and having lost touch with reality. With their “head in the clouds”, it is often difficult to communicate with friends and colleagues who do not seem to look beyond their dreams, how it is affecting others and what purpose it has in the long run. This phrase and many other seem to be at the core of director Wylie Chan's 2023 short feature “Life of Cloud”, his overall third directorial effort, which may also serve to highlight his skills as a visual storyteller since it includes various CGI elements to enhance the tale of a person facing the truth about his life.

Life of Cloud is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival

Ever since his childhood, inventor Cheung Tak-hung (Chu Pak-Hong) has been obsessed with the creation of clouds. He has forgotten everything around him, including his friends and family,...
