When actress Wendie Malick joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” she was attentive, as always, to the sustainability standards on set. “If you’re not part of the original cast, it’s harder to come on and start telling people what to do,” Malick, who plays Harrison Ford’s neurologist and love interest, told TheWrap. “Happily, there wasn’t much left for them to do.”
Now shooting the third season of the therapy-themed comedy, Malick has been concerned about sustainability in entertainment production for decades. Since 200o, she has been on the executive board of directors for the Environmental Media Association (Ema), a nonprofit whose Green Seal certification stamps Hollywood projects for their eco-conscious methods, spanning from energy efficiency to the use of recyclables.

Vince Vaughn was once the torchbearer for rapid-fire, coked-up shenanigans. His high, gravelly laugh is probably ringing in your head right now. But after his run of over-quoted crass comedies of the aughts, Vaughn took a very laudable swing at serious acting roles in the True Detective series, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Hacksaw Ridge. His latest project, the crime comedy Bad Monkey for Apple TV+ has just been renewed for a second season.

Apple TV+ has given a Season 2 renewal to breakout comedy Bad Monkey, from developer, executive producer and showrunner Bill Lawrence, star/executive producer Vince Vaughn and Warner Bros. Television where Lawrence is based.
The pickup comes more than a month after the Season 1 finale of Bad Monkey was released. I hear the delay was largely due to logistics related to relocation. In a rare good news for California production amid the recent exodus, Bad Monkey will be moving from Miami and the Florida Keys to the Los Angeles area in Season 2, sources tell Deadline. I hear the move was important to LA-based Vaughn, and the crew also faced a lot of weather-related challenges while filming Season 1. To do it, the series was awarded a $20M tax credit from California.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Bad Monkey.]
Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Fox (in his final role before disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis) as the astute deputy mayor of New York City.
Over the years, as their paths continued to cross at social events, Vaughn and Lawrence would keep tabs on each other’s progress. Vaughn became one of the most bankable stars of R-rated comedies in the late ’90s and 2000s, headlining box-office hits such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Dodgeball. ‘Bad Monkey’ just premiered on Apple TV+ and it is already sparking conversation about the show being promising and it potentially being Vince Vaughn’s best performance to date. The novel Set in the Florida Keys, ‘Bad Monkey’ is based on a novel by America's finest satirical novelist, Carl Hiaasen, who made sure to target everything from environmental destruction to political corruption in this 400 page novel. The first episode seems to be following not only the plot line but also patterns from the book. Much like the novel, the series uses dark humor and absurd situations to critique numerous aspects of society. In this dark comedy crime series we follow Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a former Miami detective turned restaurant inspector, who finds himself caught in a rather bizarre case that weirdly includes a bad-tempered monkey. I have always said that Apple TV+ is tiny, but mighty when it comes to its programming. Even though it doesn’t have a menu of show (or movie) options as large as other streamers, such as Netflix or Hulu, it’s quality over quantity for us here at Show Snob. That said, Apple TV+ is not a service you want to sleep on.
If you don’t currently have an Apple TV+ subscription, you’re missing out on great quality TV! I’m talking clever writing, engaging stories, and brilliant talent. But make no mistake, no platform is perfect, Apple TV+ does have a show we would rather skip.
Shows like Presumed Innocent and Bad Monkey need to be on your to-watch list if they aren’t already. But the series Palm Royale, for example? You can go ahead and hit skip on that! Need more suggestions? We’ve got your back!

Bad Monkey on Apple TV+ showcases a diverse cast beyond Vince Vaughn, including surprising performances like Rob Delaney's villain. Rob Delaney's quick transition from hero in Deadpool to villain in Bad Monkey highlights his range as an actor. Delaney's characters in Deadpool and Bad Monkey share nothing in common, which is a good thing.
Vince Vaughn's Bad Monkey on Apple TV+ showcases more than just its biggest star, as it also allows another actor among the cast to play a character who's the exact opposite of his persona from a massive 2024 summer blockbuster. The Bad Monkey cast is led by Vince Vaughn, but characters like Ronald Peet's Neville Stafford also play a huge part in the story. Bad Monkey is filled with morally gray individuals, but the main villain is brought to life by an unexpected actor.

Apple TV+'s newest show Bad Monkey uses a complex narrative to weave character storylines into an engaging mystery. The show's intricate storytelling proves every element is crucial to the overarching plot, bolstered by stellar performances by Vince Vaughn, Jodie Turner-Smith, and more. Despite occasional detours, Bad Monkey always circles back to Yancy's story with comedic and dramatic moments that make the series uniquely engaging.

Time Bandits star Lisa Kudrow recently shared that Taika Waititi slid into her DMs to ask her if she would star in the Apple TV+ series. According to the former Friends star, getting her to sign on to the fantasy adventure project didn't take much convincing.
In an interview with Collider, Kudrow confirmed reports that Waititi offered her the role of Penelope, leader of the Time Bandits, via a Dm. "I was thrilled. Ever since Bridesmaids was released in 2011, fans have been hoping for a sequel. While director Paul Feig has been hesitant to develop a follow-up, he hasn't completely shot down the idea.
"It's funny to me... So many people think they want something," Feig told The Direct when asked about a potential second Bridesmaids film. "Sequels are so hard to get right. And the reason that movie works so well. It's outrageous and hilarious, but it's also because her character is going through this major life crisis. And she comes out the other side victorious. To do a sequel... We don't want her to have another major life crisis. So maybe it's just a big funny wedding. If a great script or a great idea came up, I think we would all jump at it, but at the same time, it's kind of a great thing to just sort of leave it alone.

The first two episodes of Bad Monkey are now streaming on Apple TV+ and give audiences much to unpack. Let’s recap by highlighting the key events. Spoilers ahead!
Bad Monkey’s premiere episode gets right down to business. The severed arm is found by an immature fisher and the authorities at Key West, Florida, want to keep this as underwraps to avoid media attention and panic from tourists. The arm is handed over to Detective Ro (John Ortiz), who takes it to Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a suspended detective down on his luck. You see, Yancy had an affair with Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan) and things didn’t go well when Bonnie’s husband caught them together.
An angry Yancy decided the best thing to do is push Bonnie’s husband, who was minding his own business sitting in his golf cart, into the ocean…in front of dozens of witnesses.

How Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence’s 25-Year Friendship Led to the Apple TV+ Cop Comedy ‘Bad Monkey’
Vince Vaughn first met Bill Lawrence more than 25 years ago, so when cop comedy “Bad Monkey” came around, the actor jumped at the opportunity to finally work together.
“We just laughed a lot,” Vaughn told Variety at the Apple TV+ show’s premiere on Monday night. About collaborating with the “Spin City” and “Ted Lasso” hitmaker, Vaughn added: “He’s got such good ideas. He welcomes ideas. It was easy.”
It’s hardly a surprise things worked out so well, since Lawrence has made a bit of a habit of working with friends and family. At this stage in his career, “it’s just so fun to work with the people you want to spend time with,” he said, as his daughter, singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, walked past him on the sand-colored carpet outside the Hammer Museum in Westwood.
Lawrence was initially apprehensive about casting her in the show, though he knew she had the chops.

If you can worm through the detritus of overt influence, homage, and repetition of battered tropes, Bad Monkey on Apple TV+ might be worth your time. Inherent to the process of adaptation -- from book to TV -- is that words become flesh, and in the magic of incarnation, certain things come to light that might have lived and looked very differently within the mind. On paper -- the book by Carl Hiaasen -- Bad Monkey is not only attuned to the oddball frequencies of characters who comprise Florida's most interesting, mildly threatening aspects but is rendered in language of the distinctly Orange State lineage. It is rhythmically alluring, with each page devoted to at least two gags, a minor plot nudge, and someone saying something so ridiculously matter-of-fact about an incredible occurrence that you'll be more charmed to the end in a single sitting. The show has a little...

Neville Stafford is in over his head in the Apple TV+ original series Bad Monkey. An adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's acclaimed book, the TV show makes Neville an unexpected ally for disgraced ex-detective Andrew Yancy, after Yancy comes across a severed arm. That grisly find pulls both characters -- and many more -- into a caper full of greed, corruption, romance and dark comedy.
Cbr spoke to actor Ronald Peet, who portrays the charming fisherman Neville, about what interested him in his Bad Monkey character. He also talked about reading the novel that the TV series is based on. Plus, Ronald dished on the experience of sharing scenes with an actual monkey, which is just one of the many quirks of this off-the-wall mystery.

The Florida Keys is paradise on earth. As long as you ignore the crime, the corruption, the eccentric locals and some issues involving a pet monkey in a mini diaper. After a fisherman pulls a severed arm from the water (one that’s flipping the bird), the authorities want the problem disposed of immediately. Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a detective on suspension due to an unfortunate incident involving his girlfriend’s husband, is tasked with dumping the limb. He senses that not all right is in this case, and soon he finds himself on the hunt for a possible murderer. Cue the treacherous family members, a gorgeous coroner assistant, a real estate scheme in the Caribbean, voodoo queens and, yes, one misbehaving primate.
Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” brings together TV maven Bill Lawrence of “Scrubs” and “Ted Lasso” fame and Carl Hiaasen, perhaps the most beloved comedy crime writer in America.

It’s been nearly 30 years since Vince Vaughn first exploded onto movie screens as Trent, the slick, confident best friend to Jon Favreau’s Mikey in Swingers, who was forever convinced that a trip to Las Vegas could solve any emotional problem. In the decades since, Vaughn has never lost that irrepressible presence, though some projects have taken better advantage of those gifts than others. Age comes for all of us, so it seems appropriate that in his latest role, as Florida cop Andrew Yancy in Apple’s Bad Monkey,...

Bad Monkey brings Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name to the screen. Known for biting satires of Florida life, Hiaasen’s works blend darkness and humor. This limited series does justice to that tone with its offbeat characters and scenery.
Former police detective Andrew Yancy lives a simpler life now as a restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys. But his curiosity gets the better of him when a severed arm washes ashore. Yancy pairs up with medical examiner Rosa Campesino to investigate what really happened. Their search leads beyond the Keys to the Bahamas, uncovering corruption threatening a small island.
Vince Vaughn captures Yancy’s charm and drive perfectly. You believe this flawed man just wants the truth, even if it costs him. Natalie Martinez is a worthy foil as the no-nonsense Rosa, their banter rich with chemistry. In the Bahamas, Neville Stafford fights for his home, brought to life by Ronald Peet.

To lift a title from kids’ novelist Wilson Rawls, this has become the Summer of the Monkeys.
Before we get to HBO’s Chimp Crazy and Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans, devotees of the simian arts will be treated to Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, a Carl Hiaasen adaptation from the streamer’s comedy patron saint, Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking).
Contrary to the show and novel’s name, the eponymous monkey is not, in fact, bad. Played by veteran animal thespian Crystal — you know her from Community, The Fabelmans and more — she is, in fact, quite good, reliable for reactive cutaways or wild, furry hijinks. She (actually, Crystal is playing a character who seems to identify as male, but we are not going down the path of monkey pronouns here) doesn’t always feel particularly connected to the plot of Bad Monkey, but it’s charming and fun just to have her around.

Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), the big-hearted, fast-talking cop at the center of Bad Monkey, has a way of stumbling into trouble. Based on Carl Hiassen’s 2013 bestselling novel of the same name, the series begins with a severed arm turning up in a tourist’s sport-fishing catch off the Florida Keys. Yancy’s boss, Sheriff Sonny Summers (Todd Allen Durkin), wants to avoid the hassle of an investigation and offers Yancy—who’s been suspended for assaulting the husband of his sometime girlfriend, Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan)—a deal: If he wants his badge back, he must make the arm (and the case) disappear.

Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel’s Shrinking returns for season 2 on Apple TV in October, and here are the details.
According to Deadline, Apple has confirmed that the Shrinking season 2 will begin on the 15th October.
Bill Lawrence is probably best known for creating Scrubs, the wonderful hospital sitcom which ran for nine seasons from 2002 to 2009. It showcased Lawrence’s skill in weaving incredible pathos through a show crammed with jokes – My Lunch from season 5 may just be one of the best examples of this in any sitcom – and he has only gone from strength to strengh.
After six seasons of Cougar Town starring Courtney Cox, he co-created Ted Lasso with Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt, which soon became a global phenomenon due to its mix of hope, kindness and uncynical humour.
That brings us to Shrinking, which he co-created with Jason Segel and Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein.
