Sales company 101 Films Intl. has picked up the distribution rights to Paddy Slattery’s debut crime thriller “Broken Law,” and will present it to buyers at the Cannes Virtual Film Market.

The Stranger actress Dervla Kirwan has landed the lead role in Smother, the noir thriller produced by BBC Studios for Irish broadcaster RTÉ.

Kirwan, who features as the recurring character Corrine Price in Netflix’s The Stranger, will play family matriarch Val Ahern in Smother, which is penned by The Spanish Princess and Mr Selfridge writer Kate O’Riordan.

Renée Zellweger may be earning praise for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, but the real-life story behind the Wizard of Oz star is much more tragic.

Garland dominated movie screens with roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis and the Easter Parade, but the star struggled with substance abuse and body image issues since her breakout at the age of 16.

The new film on her life, Judy, follows Garland from 1968 to 1969 as she performs a series of sold-out concerts in London while struggling to cope with depression and her addictions.

Contrary to the biopic “Judy,” the first encounter between Judy Garland and her future husband Mickey Deans was in no way a “meet-cute” at a party. In fact, their first encounter was decidedly unglamorous.

As the film tells it, Garland (played by Renee Zellwegger) was invited to a party by her daughter Liza Minnelli (Gemma-Leah Devereux), who, by that time, had already wowed audiences in a chip-off-the-old-block way with a Tony-winning performance in “Flora the Red Menace.” We see Garland and Deans (Finn Wittrock) lock eyes across the crowded room, his approach, flirtation, flying sparks, and so on.

But the truth is, there was no happenin’ Hollywood party, no instant chemistry, not even a magical moment when their eyes met. The truth: They first met when he delivered drugs to her hotel room in the middle of the night.

Take away the gore in Peter Nicholson’s story of young hikers and you’d have an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism

Peter Nicholson’s low-budget horror-thriller starts better than it ends. As two young hikers (Gemma-Leah Devereux, Rebecca Night) are led off the beaten track by a hunky guide (Callum Blue), the first act’s every set-up benefits from the screen-filling backdrops of the eponymous moors. It’s disappointing, then, that Nicholson should retreat from this spectacular stage to a farmhouse haunted by mysterious deaths; doubly so when the relationships, dialogue and action all stop ringing true. Redact the gore, and it’d make an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism, but A Night in the Woods (2012) hounded its characters far more persuasively over this particular terrain.

British psychological thriller Dartmoor Killing is using an innovative distribution, starting with self-distribution in cinemas from September 18 followed by a DVD and VOD release by Soda Pictures later in the autumn.

The story follows two friends When on a hiking weekend on Dartmoor, both are carrying secrets they have not shared. An encounter with a man on the moors leads them into a terrifying ordeal.

It seems safe to assume that clowns became “scary” in the mid-1970s, when John Wayne Gacy, branded “The Killer Clown,” murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men. 35-plus years later, director and co-writer Conor McMahon makes them funny again in Stitches, a horror-comedy about a grease-painted balloon folder who returns from the dead to exact revenge on the kids whose taunting inadvertently caused his death six years before.

Aiming for a gruesomely silly vibe that plays like equal parts American Pie and Evil Dead 2, Stitches preys on teenage foibles and clown clichés alike, offering mostly solid if not quite cult-classic-level fun.

Ross Noble has always been entertaining to me, but he’s not a comedian with universal appeal. But enough about his standup, how successful is both Noble himself, and Stitches as a whole? As it turns out, it’s not bad. I was reminded a few times of the 1994 oddity Funny Man where a cheeky supernatural killer dispatches people in various horrific and outrageous ways. And that’s what’s on offer here. After accidentally meeting a grizzly demise during a children’s party, Stitches returns to get his bloody revenge on the pesky kids (now teenagers) who were responsible. And each one is picked off in increasingly gory ways.

The effects aren’t stellar. The film’s low budget and you can tell. But...

In case you’re not so familiar with this title, we’re here to inform you that Comedown is an upcoming horror-thriller (currently in post-production) which comes from director Menhaj Huda and has quite interesting cast on board. Huda directs the movie from a script written by Steven Kendall, which centers on a South-East London teens who break into an abandoned tower block but soon realize there is someone else in the building – not a friendly psychopath, that’s for sure!

Ross Noble was a pretty constant presence at FrightFest the 13th. He took the stage for an impromptu stand-up intro routine before the event organisers even appeared, was frequently seen milling around in the foyer, and in particular introduced his big screen debut as psychopathic revenging clown Stitches. Noble’s intros were always entertaining to me, but he’s not a comedian with universal appeal and some audience members weren’t as amused.
