"I never write like some people paint by numbers." ~ Dara Frazier
She says she was "some kind of nerd" in her youth, where her Saturdays were happily spent at the library, immersed in books. She has procured that affinity for reading into a busy career as produced screenwriter, an author of books and the creator of Off-Broadway plays, with production credits at MTV, Disney, Netflix and HBO Max.
Dara has been hired to write, polish and re-write screenplays and optioned a half dozen projects. Her experience spans several genres; Rom-Coms, Horror, Serial Dramas, multi-cam comedy for 6-11 year old's and single-camera comedy for adults. She is equally adept at working in live-action with real people as she is creating animated characters that come to life. She is the director and writer of the CG-animated feature film, "The Sky Princess," an official selection of the African Diaspora International Film Festival starring Vivica A. Fox.
Dara attended the Detroit High School for Fine and Performing Arts, and has since infused a bit of Detroit into her stories. You can find hints in her scripts of Motor City Car Dealerships, and hear the rhythm of the music of Motown.
While living in Harlem, NYC, Dara heard the noise that becomes white noise, loved the melting pot of New Yorkers, and living in the grayscale that is Manhattan. New Yorkers tell the truth, which Dara appreciates. "There is no maybe, you get a yes or no, which can be refreshing." Dara was honored to be accepted into the Harlem Writer's Guild. Her feature film, "Sweeter Without Sugar" was an official selection at the African American Women In Cinema Film Festival.
She directed the feature film, "Not Every Woman" starring Omar Gooding, Lodric Collins, Erika Degraff, Shannon Echols, Georgina Elizabeth Okon, and Jean Cecile Nadine. Dara loves "casting the right person for the role," and feels indie filmmaking is a place you can do that-without worrying about studio decisions and casting for funding.
Dara takes full advantage now of living in California and working in Los Angeles. Favorite time is spent taking long walks on the sunny beaches and leaning into the synergy and culture of one of the world's most international cities. Dara has a son who is part of Gen-Alpha; so Dara also wants to write stories with a particular empathy and heart, and she understands how to get to the hook of a story for people with shorter attention spans, which doesn't just include teenagers. Living in LA during some pivotal events including the Covid pandemic and BLM demonstrations, Dara is keen to explore social justice, equal rights and find ways to tell stories that matter. She is an optimist and loves working collaboratively with other creatives.
Besides writing her own work, and work for hire, Dara has been a lecturer and educator. She is developing her own web and social media clips where she will offer training tips and tools for the new crop of writers. "AWriteWay" includes biographical info as well as anecdotes. "Your heart must be fully vested..you have to keep the North Star," she says in one short form episode.
Dara is represented by Natural Talent, Inc. and More Zap Productions & Management LLC.
