Roland Emmerich confirmed to take the helm on World War II project Midway
Author: Zehra Phelan

Cannes Film Festival yesterday saw another unveiling. Independence Day director, Roland Emmerich, has officially been confirmed to take the helm of the World War II project, Midway, which he will also co-produce.

The Battle of Midway in the South Pacific was a decisive naval battle in June 1942, six months after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. The U.S. Navy defeated an attacking fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy near Midway Atoll after U.S. codebreakers were able to pinpoint the time and place of the attack. The damage to the Japanese fleet was so extensive that it never recovered and military historians regard the battle as a turning point in the war.

This won’t be the first time The Battle of Midway has been covered on film, back in 1976, Universal’s epic “Midway,” starring Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Glenn Ford, Hal Holbrook, Toshiro Mifune,...

La bataille de Midway (1976)
Independence Day Director Takes on WWII Thriller Midway Next
La bataille de Midway (1976)
The Chinese-based Bona Film Group finalized the biggest deal to come out of the Cannes Film Festival, shelling out $80 million for a new World War II thriller Midway, which has Roland Emmerich set to direct. Bona Film Group has acquired worldwide film distribution rights for every market except the U.S., with CAA brokering the deal and representing the U.S. rights. It isn't clear if there is a domestic distributor being lined up quite yet, but this project is said to be Roland Emmerich's next film.

Deadline reports that Wes Tooke (Colony) wrote the script, with Bona Film Group's Yu Dong producing alongside Mark Gordon for The Mark Gordon Company, Matt Jackson and Harald Kloser. The film is an epic telling of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II. The story follows the real soldiers and aviators who pulled...

Exclusive first look at the UK poster of Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney in The Journey
Author: Zehra Phelan

We are pleased to launch an exclusive first look at Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney in the UK poster for The Journey – the story of two of Northern Ireland’s political forces, loyalist Ian Paisley and former Ira Commander Martin McGuinness, forced together over the final peace agreement, who reluctantly begin to form a bond.

Related: Timothy Spall on playing David Irving in Denial

The poster in which Spall looks uncannily like how Ben Stiller would look in his dotage depicts both men in their stature of power yet divided by the title, a reference to the division of Ireland as it stands, in both its political and religious beliefs.

The Hole and Killing Bono director, Nick Hamm, takes the helm to bring to life a script from screenwriter and former journalist, Colin Bateman. Joining Meaney and Spall is somewhat of a stellar cast with Toby Stephens (Believe,...

13-Time Jeopardy! Champ Matt Jackson Ends Streak, Ranks Fourth All Time in Winnings
Matthew Kelly Jackson
What is winning streak over? Matt Jackson, the 23-year-old paralegal from Washington, D.C., relinquished his crown after losing his 14th round on ABC's iconic game show, Jeopardy! Tuesday night against competitor Michael Baker from New York City. While it may be somewhat of a disappointment, Jackson's wallet won't be too sad. He accumulated $411,612 during his 13-round-winning streak and landed him in fourth place in the show's overall "all-time regular season money winnings" ranking.  Still, he won't be running to the bank with all that cash. Instead, he said he will donate 10 percent to charity.  Jackson quickly became an audience...

‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant’s 13-Game Winning Streak Is Over
It’s over for Matt Jackson, but don’t feel too badly. The 23-year-old paralegal from Washington ended his 13-game Jeopardy! winning streak today, losing to New York City’s Michael Baker. But in the process, he amassed over $400,000 in total winnings ($411,612 to be exact), landing him in fourth place on the all-time regular-season (non-tournament) money winnings list. Only three players in the show's history – Ken Jennings ($2.5M), Dave Madden ($432,400) and Julia Collins…...

Alex Trebek at an event for The 32nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (2005)
Get to Know Matt Jackson, the 23-Year-Old Who Is Killing Everyone on Jeopardy
Alex Trebek at an event for The 32nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (2005)
As an avid Jeopardy! viewer, one gets to see all kinds of odd ducks from the farthest corners of these United States. We have grown accustomed to Alex Trebek's beautifully stilted intros — "Darlene from Akron, Ohio, I hear you have an unusual collection of old keys?" — and untraditional trivia geniuses. But there's something deeply fascinating about the show's newest phenomenon, Matt Jackson. A paralegal based in Washington, D.C, the 23-year-old Jackson (he auditioned when he was 22) has won just over $230,000 in eight appearances on the show, virtually destroying the competition each time. Nobody else comes close. The contestant has also provided the show with its most slow-building smile, which begins in a frown at the top of his introduction and crawls into a grin. He has repeated this, without fail, at the opening of each episode. As each smile concludes its journey, Jackson holds up the number of...

The Internet Is Obsessed With Jeopardy! Contestant Matt Jackson and Now So Are We!
Matthew Kelly Jackson
Want to be in the Matt Jackson fan club? Well, better get in line, you jerk. No cuts, no buts, no coconuts! Yeah, you haven't heard that since the late '80s, huh? Oh, you've never heard that phrase? Damn, we're old. Anyway, let's talk about Jeopardy! contestant Matthew "Badass" Jackson. The 23-year-old paralegal from Washington D.C. is on a winning streak right now, which is super impressive. However, it was his quirky introduction that got people talking in the first place. Basically, his intro was a little…off-putting to say the least. You know the producers told all the contestants beforehand to act natural when they introduced them and just smile for the camera. This is...

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance remake in the works
John Ford's classic 1962 western is to be turned into an 'urban crime/thriller' set in 1980s Pennsylvania...

It really is at the stage now where we appear to be covering at least one reboot or remake story a week. We thought this week had been quite light on them, in truth, but then comes the news that The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is getting a modern makeover. This story might not cheer too many people up.

Paramount is developing a new take on the film, which originally starred John Wayne and James Stewart. John Ford directed the 1962 original.

The new version is going to take the core narrative of the original film, and relocate it to modern day Pennsylvania. The flashback will be set in the 1980s, and rather than being overtly a western, the plan this time - don't shoot the messenger, folks - is to transform...
