‘Spacewoman’ Doc About First Woman to Command a Space Shuttle Mission Screens at Cph:dox While NASA Axes Pledge to Land a Woman on the Moon
Image
Hannah Berryman’s documentary “Spacewoman” chronicles the life and career of astronaut Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot and command a spacecraft in an era where many men still thought there was no place for women in space. During her time working at NASA in the 1990s, Collins broke many glass ceilings, which culminated in four dramatic and dangerous space shuttle missions. Through archival materials and intimate interviews, Berryman’s doc celebrates Collins’ groundbreaking work in space while also considering the emotional drama Collins’ family experienced during her trailblazing career.

The film is timely, given the fact that in February, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered NASA to purge diversity, equity, and inclusion frameworks specifically targeting women in leadership. In 2023, NASA proclaimed that it would “land the first woman, first person of color, and first international partner astronaut on the moon using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before.

“Satisfied,” a documentary about Renée Elise Goldsberry’s life while creating her iconic onstage role in “Hamilton” and “Black Box Diaries” — the Oscar-nominated documentary about a director’s investigation into sexual assault — are part of the 2025 Athena Film Festival at Barnard College’s line-up.

Aff announced its narrative and documentary feature lineup ahead of the event taking place from March 6-9 on the Barnard campus in New York City. Chanel Doc-Maker Hannah Berryman Sets New Feature Documentary ‘Spacewoman’ About Astronaut Eileen Collins (Exclusive)
Image
“Coco Chanel: Unbuttoned” director Hannah Berryman has set her latest documentary, about Nasa’s first female spacecraft commander Eileen Collins.

The feature-length doc is based on Collins’ memoir, “Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars,” which was co-written by Collins and Jonathan H. Ward.

According to the logline, it will focus on “the extraordinary achievements of Eileen Collins, the first woman to pilot and command a spacecraft, paving the way for the next generation of female space explorers.”

“Eileen’s journey from an underprivileged childhood in small town America to becoming the first woman to pilot and command a space shuttle is a fascinating one,” said Berryman. “The emotional drama of her family’s tale is just as gripping as the risks the shuttle astronauts like Eileen had to take.”

Collins said: “I am enormously excited to be involved with this film project. It is more than my personal journey...

‘Coco Chanel Unbuttoned’ Director on Making the BBC/Fremantle Documentary: ‘She Was the First Influencer’
Image
Coco Chanel is one of the world’s most famous fashion icons, but her legacy has rarely been tackled on screen. Director Hannah Berryman aims to change that with a new feature-length BBC Two documentary about the designer.

Chanel’s absence on screen is partly down to the fact that very little footage of her exists aside from a couple of interviews from the 1950s and some 1930s B-roll.

But it’s also, the director says, because Chanel has long been underestimated. “She’s — for me — the most legendary designer ever, not even just ‘woman designer,’” says Berryman, who has directed documentaries about topics as varied as music studios, robots and beauty queens and is a former creative director of film at British Vogue.

In “Unbuttoned,” which was produced by WhyNow Studios and executive produced by Janet Lee, Berryman examines Chanel’s life and legacy, including her early years as an orphan and,...
