Her father was Liberian ambassador to East Africa Henry Boima Fahnbulleh, Sr., her mother was educator and civil right activist Mary Brownell (1929-, and her brother is Presidential Security Advisor, Dr. H. Boima Fahnbulleh. Her maternal grandfather was lawyer Nete Sie Brownell, the former Attorney General and former Postmaster General of Liberia.
