His father, a military architect and an experienced musician, taught him his first guitar chords at age 5, and his grandfather gave him formal music lessons at home. He played at parties as a teenager, then got a gig playing the requinto (a smaller, higher-pitched guitar) in a six-person ensemble on the radio. Producers at the radio station reduced the sextet to a trio, which became famous as Los Tres Caballeros.
