Kim’s Convenience stars Andrew Phung and Nicole Power have landed their next projects at Canada’s CBC, less than a month after the comedy’s producers said the series would end with its fifth season. Their latest titles will launch during the upcoming 2021-22 broadcast season.

Phung, who appears in the Korean Canadian family comedy as Kimchee, has teamed with The Secret Marathon‘s Scott Townsend to create Run the Burbs. The original series will focus a young, bold Canadian family taking a different approach to living life to the fullest in the suburbs. Phung will star as a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids. The series has been in development since May 2020 and is produced by Pier 21 Films, with additional details to be announced later this spring.

The semifinalists have been named for the 13th annual NBCUniversal Short Film Festival, which celebrates diverse stories in a search for the next generation of storytellers.

Chosen from more than 3,400 submissions, the semifinalists feature stories about people of ethnically diverse backgrounds, the Lgbtq community, and women. Of the 15 projects that made the cut this year, 11 are directed and/or directed by women, topping 2017’s record inclusion rate, and about half feature stories centered on female protagonists.

“In a time where female storytellers are powerfully calling on the industry for more opportunities and recognition, it is fitting that our Short Film Festival has set a new record for female writers and directors represented in our semifinal shorts,” said Karen Horne, Svp programming talent development & inclusion at NBC Entertainment. “I’m proud that our festival not only puts more female storytellers into the spotlight but also features an array of impactful shorts about diverse people.

After seven years, Lionsgate finally brought back the Saw franchise with Jigsaw last fall, and it seems there are already plans for for Saw 9. While promoting the home video release of Jigsaw, directors Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig revealed that certain aspects in Jigsaw actually set the foundation for Saw 9 and the future of the franchise. Here's what Peter Spierig had to say when asked about how this movie sets up Saw 9.

"There's a lot of things that go on in Jigsaw that we talked about where they could go in further movies, and so there's things with the characters and ideas that have the foundations of other things that could potentially come in the next couple of movies. The box office was expected to take yet another hit this weekend, with three newcomers arriving, each of which debuting in less than 3,000 theaters. Sure enough, all three movies came in far under expectations, with Jigsaw, the eighth movie in the Saw franchise, coming out on top with a paltry $16.5 million, which managed to come in under even the most modest of expectations. Still, the movie had no troubles coming out on top, with the other two newcomers Universal's Thank You For Serving and Paramount's Suburbicon both severely underperforming.

While Thank You For Your Service was at least a critical hit, with a solid 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Jigsaw and Suburbicon failed to impress the critics, with the Saw sequel earning a 39% score on Rt with Suburbicon faring even worse, with a 29% score. Still, Jigsaw has already made its money back from a $10 million production budget, taking in a $5,525 per-screen average from 2,941 theaters.
