Why ‘Yearly Departed’ Said Goodbye to 2020 With Eulogies and Green Screen Pod Production
Image
Director Linda Mendoza has more than three decades years of production experience across scripted and specials content, and ironically it was HBO’s “Greater Tuna,” which she worked on in 1984, that best prepared her for Amazon Prime Video’s “Yearly Departed.”

“Greater Tuna” featured two lead actors playing all of the roles of the inhabitants of the small-town of Greater Tuna, Texas in the comedy project, which meant its visual style needed to feature a lot of locked-off shots, with a heavy post-production lift to insert the same two actors into a scene multiple times, in each role. Because “Yearly Departed,” a “variety special meets ‘Waiting for Guffman,'” as Mendoza puts it, was filmed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it, too, isolated performances and dropped them into the same scene via VFX.

“It was a very long process just thinking about how do you put people in a room when...

Nick Stahl and Luke Bracey in American Dream (2021)
Trailer for Mob Thriller 'American Dream' Directed by Janusz Kaminski
Nick Stahl and Luke Bracey in American Dream (2021)
"You want me to kill Him?" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled American Dream, arriving on VOD at the beginning of January. This is actually the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, who was still is Steven Spielberg's regular cinematographer for years and years (he even recently filmed West Side Story with him). Strange we've never heard of this before now! The film is about two young American entrepreneurs who face a Russian mobster's vengeance after they cut him out of a business deal. American Dream stars Luke Bracey and Michiel Huisman, with Nick Stahl, Agnieszka Grochowska, Samantha Ressler, Ed Metzger, and Kathleen Gati. This doesn't look particularly unique, another mobster vs entrepreneurs story with all the usual tropes. Fire it up. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Janusz Kaminski's American Dream, direct from YouTube: Academy Award winning cinematographer Janusz...

‘Buffaloed’ Director Tanya Wexler Wants to See More ‘Kick-Ass’ Female Characters in Hollywood
Tanya Wexler
Tanya Wexler’s new film “Buffaloed” is “Wolf of Wall Street” but with a feminist twist, with Zoey Deutch scamming her way to the top. Peg Dahl (Deutch) is a self-proclaimed “aggressive little s—” who is obsessed with making enough cash to escape her blue-collar existence. With an unquenchable thirst for power, Peg finds her calling in the underground world of debt-collecting #DollarSignEmoji.

WrapWomen recently caught up with director Tanya Wexler who took us behind the scenes of the film (now available on DVD and VOD), revealed what she learned from Deutch and gave advice to aspiring female directors.

What about “Buffaloed” made you realize, “I need to be a part of this!”

I found out that Zoey Deutch was attached and I was a huge fan, and then I read the script and it was hilarious. I couldn’t imagine a better marriage of an actress to a role.
