La nueva serie original de Atresplayer, “La Sombra de la Tierra”, un drama rural ambientado en 1896, basado en la novela homónima de la actriz Elvira Mínguez, que también se pone por primera vez tras las cámaras como directora del proyecto, se proyectará en el Festival de San Sebastián en septiembre.

“La Sombra de la Tierra”, compuesta por cuatro episodios de 50 minutos, narra el enfrentamiento de dos mujeres marcadas por el odio. Garibalda (Adelfa Calvo) es una mujer enferma que gobierna a los aldeanos con puño de hierro. Desde la infancia odia a Atilana (María Morales), a quien culpa de todos sus males. La posición de poder que hereda de su marido la utiliza para abusar de todos los que la rodean. Atilana es una viuda de mediana edad que sostiene como puede una finca que en otros tiempos fue grande.

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders has perhaps one twist too many. Actually, it has a couple of twists piled on top of one central twist concerning two children in different countries being menaced by what seems to be a supernatural presence. Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques' screenplay does something strange by the end: it actually removes the stakes of everything that came before with its trio of revelations that at first test and then demolish any credulity the movie had built up by that point. I'll try not to spoil Intruders, although it takes a while before Fresnadillo's film takes any kind of shape that's worth describing. There is a disappointing thought that emerges after watching Intruders: that is it? The script from Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques sets up a fairly limp fish, which is mediocre through the second and third acts. The acting from Clive Owen and Carice van Houten is much better than the script. However, the film is hampered by a partially fleshed out story that is mostly lacking in terror. Casariego and Marques do manage to create some interest with their dual storytelling style. The film begins with Juan (Izán Corchero) and a mysterious figure. This figure wants to steal Juan's face as he feels he has no identity of his own.

Classic monster stories have creatures tormenting children. Children are often the protagonist unless there's an adult around to really take charge of a situation. Monsters haunting children is comfortable to a story. It's easy. At least, it feels easy with Intruders, the new film from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. But Fresnadillo, who knows intensity and haunting atmospheres, has the whole thing on auto-pilot. Intruders is a film that desperately yearns to find its rhythm, which it never does, all the while we're revving up for the inevitable information dump. Info dumps are easier than monsters scaring children, now that I think about it. The film bounces between two stories, one about a boy, the other about a girl. The boy, played by Izán Corchero lives in Spain with his mother, played by Pilar López de Ayala. Actors Clive Owen and Ella Purnell are the father and daughter on the other side of the story.
