Fast-forward nearly a decade and a half, and the movie has earned the status of a cult classic. Funny how time changes things, right?

Actor-writer Vishnu Manchu has grand plans for big-budget Indian epic “Kannappa.”

The film revisits the folk tale of Kannappa, an atheist hunter who became a devotee of Hindu god Shiva and plucked out his eyes in an act of extreme devotion. The story was previously filmed in the Kannada and Telugu languages as “Bedara Kannappa” and “Kalahasti Mahatyam” in 1954, both starring Rajkumar; in the Hindi language as “Shiv Bhakta” (1955), starring Shahu Modak; in Telugu again as “Bhakta Kannappa” (1976), starring Krishnam Raju; and in Kannada again as “Shiva Mecchida Kannappa” (1988), starring Rajkumar, Shiva Rajkumar and Puneeth Rajkumar.

Prabhas and Mohanlal join Vishnu Manchu’s Kannappa, a pan-Indian film on Lord Shiva’s devotee

Actor Vishnu Manchu, who is known for his versatile roles in Telugu cinema, is gearing up for his dream project Kannappa, a pan-Indian film based on the life of the legendary devotee of Lord Shiva. The film, which was launched in August with a grand ceremony in Srikalahasti, is being directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by Vishnu’s father and veteran actor Mohan Babu.

The film has already created a lot of buzz among the fans and media, as it is said to feature some of the biggest stars from different languages. According to the latest reports, Rebel Star Prabhas and Malayalam superstar Mohanlal have agreed to play cameo roles in Kannappa.
