A new episode of our What Happened to This Horror Movie? video series has just been released, and with this one we’re taking a look back at the 2012 sci-fi action film Dredd (watch it Here), which is based on the same comic book source material as the 1995 Sylvester Stallone movie Judge Dredd, but took a more faithful approach to the adaptation. The official word is that Dredd was directed by Pete Travis from a screenplay by Alex Garland, although we were told that Garland actually directed the movie. Invasive is a 2024 survival horror film directed by SyFy alum Jem Garrard. The film follows the young, grieving Kay (Khosi Ngema) squatting in pharma billionaire Pierces (Francis Chouler) secluded mountain home. But when Pierce returns home early, a tense game of cat-and-mouse ensues. Pierce isnt a normal evil billionaire but a mad scientist testing his new pharmaceuticals on unwilling victims, especially those who irk him. And Kay is right within his grasp. Released just this year, Invasive has too few reviews to even have a Rotten Tomatoes score. But the real stand out of this scrappy little Tubi original comes in the form of its lead actors. Chouler and Ngema both put on gripping performances that alone make Invasive worth a watch.

Beta Cinemas has sold Hammarskjold – Fight For Peace, the Swedish box office hit, across Europe as a slew of deals were unveiled at EFM in Berlin.

The biopic has gone to Rai Cinema in Italy, Swift Productions for France, Twelve Oaks Spain, Portugal’s Outsider Films and Discovery for the former Yugoslavia. Beta adds a U.S. deal is under negotiation.

Hammarskjöld – Fight For Peace, directed and co-written by Per Fly, stars Sex Education actor Mikael Persbrandt in the role of Dag Hammarskjöld, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Fly wrote and directed the feature film Backstabbing for Beginners for A24, with Theo James and Ben Kingsley in the leading roles. He also directed the popular Danish political drama Borgen and is currently is in preproduction on the Nordic crime series Reservatet for Netflix.

Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in 1961. But questions surrounding his tragic passing in a plane crash, and his sexuality, refuse to die down.

“We know who he is, but we don’t know that much about him,” says director Per Fly, now bringing “Hammarskjöld – Fight for Peace” to the International Film Festival Rotterdam. His journals “Markings,” published posthumously, provided a way in.

“There he was, this powerful man, and yet his writings deal with loneliness and sacrifice. There was a fragile poet inside of a politician.”

With Beta Cinema on board, the film was produced by Patrick Ryborn for Unlimited Stories. Variety premieres the trailer here.

According to Fly, Hammarskjöld was also a man who couldn’t afford to love.

Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt is the star of “Hammarskjöld,” Per Fly’s Cold War-set political thriller, which Beta Cinema will launch at the European Film Market.

Persbrandt will play the lead role in the English-language film as Dag Hammarskjöld, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations who died in a mysterious plane crash in 1961.

Hammarskjöld, whom John F. Kennedy called “the greatest statesman of our century,” was a Nobel Prize winner who fought to end colonization.

Produced by Beta Nordic Studios’ Swedish banner Unlimited Stories, the story opens at the peak of the Cold War in 1961 at the Un headquarters in New York City. The charismatic diplomat and economist Dag Hammarskjöld has reached the pinnacle of his power, serving as Secretary General of the United Nations in his seventh year.

After decolonization, he takes it upon himself to bring peace to the African countries, thwarting plans to further exploit resources...

The press machine for Lionsgate's Dredd should be gearing up soon. The movie is scheduled to be released later this September in 3D. Lionsgate and DNA Films have released new poster for Dredd. A new adaptation centered on the character Judge Joe Dredd created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, from the British science fiction anthology “2000 Ad” and centers on Dredd (Karl Urban), an American law enforcement officer in a violent city of the future where uniformed Judges combine the powers of police, judge, jury and executioner. Dredd and his fellow Judges are empowered to arrest, sentence and even execute criminals on the spot.

The film is directed by Pete Travis from a screenplay written by Alex Garland.

Any of you who have seen The Dark Knight Rises at the cinema recently (probably around 100% of you) may have caught sight of the trailer for Dredd. It was a fitting launch for the upcoming remake of the Sly Stallone version, as the film will be looking to emulate both the success and dark tone of the recently concluded Batman trilogy. If you’re not convinced, just take a look at the release of the final poster for the film. They may as well have just super-imposed Karl Urban’s Dredd over Christian Bale’s caped crusader. The original 1995 Judge Dredd upset some fans due to the amount of screen time it gave star Sylvester Stallone's face. A judge never removes his helmet. Well, the 2012 reboot seems to be holding true to its promise that we won't be seeing much of Karl Urban's beautiful profile. Which is keeping purists happy. Lionsgate has released a new photo from Dredd, which gives us our first look at Lena Headey as Madeline "Ma-Ma" Madrigal. Check her out, then read on for more details about this scared-up villain.

We reported way back in January that Lena Headey was cast as the villainous Ma-Ma, who was originally conceived as a woman in her 70s. The actress eventually won over screenwriter Alex Garland with the idea that she would be a middle-aged villain, who has a hatred of men.

"She's a prostitute who then kills her pimp and takes over his drug-running business. And Ma-Ma is a bit of a man-hater. I think of her like an old great white shark who is just waiting for someone bigger and stronger to show up and kill her. She's ready for it. In fact, she can't wait for it to happen. And yet no one can get the job done.

The comic writer had this to say about the direction of the new Judge Dredd character,

"Originally he was a very two-dimensional character, a vehicle for extreme behavior in an extreme society, more of a robot than a man.

Lionsgate's upcoming comic book adaptation Dredd is currently in post-production, working towards a September 21 release date. Storyboard artist Frederick Mpuuga revealed one early illustration on his blog, which teases a chase sequence involving Karl Urban's title character hunting down a suspect on his Lawmaster bike. On Friday, we reported that Dredd director Pete Travis had been fired from the production, with screenwriter-producer Alex Garland taking over in post-production. Today, both Pete Travis and Alex Garland released a joint statement to address last week's story. Take a look at what they had to say below.

"During all stages of the filmmaking, Dredd has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties. From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film. This situation has been misinterpreted. To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit. We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when its released next year."

Dredd is still slated for release on September 21, 2012.

The Lionsgate comic book adaptation Dredd has hit a serious snag, with director Pete Travis leaving the project in the middle of post-production. Screenwriter-producer Alex Garland is said to be taking over the project in the editing room, and may seek a director's credit.

Dredd wrapped principal photography earlier this year and it seems the producers and executives in charge of the production were not pleased with the footage Pete Travis was delivering. Another insider claims that, while Pete Travis isn't involved in the post-production process, he is still keeping tabs on the project.

There is also the possibility that Dredd may undergo reshoots, although it isn't known who would direct. Dredd doesn't hit theaters until September 21, 2012, so there is still plenty of time for this matter to be sorted out.

Lionsgate has set a release date for its 3D comic book adaptation Dredd to Sept. 21, 2012.

Based on the popular "Judge Dredd" comic book series, Dredd, is directed by Pete Travis and stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey, and tells the futuristic story of a powerful cop in Mega City One, a city that runs down the entire east coast of America.

Dredd will launch the same weekend as Sony's Hotel Transylvania and a week after Sony/Screen Gems' Resident Evil: Retribution, both of which will screen in 3D.
