The movie poster shows one woman's body, with different patches of skin. Meanwhile, the title bloodies the back, while some of the flesh looks necrotic.

Chicago – Tom Hanks is using his golden years as a vehicle to stretch his performance skills, and his role as a sort of “Death of a Salesman” spin in “A Hologram for the King” gives him an opportunity to keep stretching. The stylish film floats within the focus on his character, and he delivers.

Usually when the Middle East shows up in modern films it’s the setting for dramas and thrillers. The troubled global “hot spot” has been the backdrop for “based on a true story” tales of the military with American Sniper and one of the first flicks to be released this year, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi. So it’s surprising that this region has been the setting for two comedies this year (Salmon Fishing In The Yeman tested the waters five years ago). And one big source of the humor is the culture clash when Americans arrive there. It’s the old “fish out of water” recipe for laughs. A couple of months ago, it was Tina Fey butting heads in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. And now arriving in Saudi Arabia is the affable everyman (really every-American-man) Tom Hanks, an actor familiar with that comedy trope, going back thirty years...

This week, both at the Tribeca Film Festival as well as opening in theaters, we have an independent movie that stars Tom Hanks. Especially considering how infrequently Hanks acts in small films these days, this is something to take notice of. The film in question? Well, it’s A Hologram for the King, of course. Side note, this is another example of a thing that I mentioned yesterday, namely that a Tribeca title is going basically straight to general release. Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel and the sales team have closed deals in Scandinavia (Mis.Label); Latin America excluding Mexico (Swen); Benelux (A-Film Benelux Rechten); Poland (Monolith); Portugal (Pris Audiovisuais); and the former Yugoslavia (Blitz Film).

Icon Film Distribution acquires UK rights for Tom Tykwer’s A Hologram For The King starring Tom Hanks.

A Hologram for the King, a comedic drama starring Tom Hanks and directed by Tom Tykwer, has been acquired by Icon Film Distribution for the UK.

Tykwer, the German filmmaker behind Run Lola Run and Cloud Atlas, also adapted the script from the eponymous novel by Dave Eggers.

Hanks co-stars with Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Omar Elba (Intelligence), Tracey Fairaway (Enough Said), David Menkin (Zero Dark Thirty) and Tom Skerritt (Ted, Top Gun).

Hanks plays Alan Clay, an American salesmen who finds himself in Saudi Arabia making a desperate bid to save his ailing career after the construction of a huge new complex in the middle of the desert.

A Hologram for the King, a comedic drama starring Tom Hanks, has rounded out the cast with Sarita Choudhury (Homeland), Omar Elba (Intelligence), Tracey Fairaway (Enough Said), David Menkin (Zero Dark Thirty) and Tom Skerritt (Ted, Top Gun). The film, directed by Tom Tykwer, begins shooting in Morocco Thursday. Principal photography has commenced in Morocco on Tom Tykwer’s A Hologram For The King starring Tom Hanks.

Sarita Choudhury, Omar Elba, Tracey Fairaway, David Menkin and Tom Skerritt have joined the cast and the shooting is scheduled to take place in Morocco and Germany until June.

Uwe Schott and Stefan Arndt of X Filme Creative Pool produce with Arcadiy Golubovich and Tim O’Hair of Primeridian and Hanks and Gary Goetzman of Playtone in Association with Silver Reel Entertainment and Fábrica de Cine.

Eggers, Steven Shareshian of Playtone, Claudia Bluemhuber of Silver Reel, Gaston Pavlovich of Fabrica de Cine and Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Lotus International are the executive producers.

Lotus introduced the picture at Afm in November and handles international sales while CAA represents Us rights. X Verleih will distribute the film in Germany.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini’s chemistry make for a heartwarming film in Fox Searchlights new blu-ray release Enough Said.

Divorced mom Eva (Louis-Dreyfus) may be falling for Albert (Gandolfini), a sweet, funny, like-minded divorcé. But as their relationship blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (Keener), who’s always complaining about her ex-husband. When Eva realizes that Albert is the target of Marianne’s rants, she begins to question her own perceptions about first impressions and second chances.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini have an undeniable chemistry together on-screen. The two definitely carry this film, and make it enjoyable. The script however, is not as solid as I had hoped. The dialog could use some punching up, and the way they keep letting Eva make stupid mistakes is a bit infuriating at times. As Etta James might say: at last. A romantic comedy that is romantic and funny and not simply an insult to the intelligence of all carbon-based life forms. Nicole Holofcener's Enough Said is a step up for this director, in whose previous work I have sometimes heard a few false notes – inaudible, I should however confess, to many others. She has created a thoroughly likable and genuinely funny film and its stars, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini, are a revelation, singly and together. Like their director, they unassumingly but decidedly took it to the next level on this movie. The fact that Gandolfini still had so much to offer as an actor is desperately sad.

Seeing as Hollywood is littered with an abundance of meaningless romantic comedies every year, it’s a genre somewhat tarnished from a critical point of view. However when done well, it can be the most delightful of territories to delve into, and Nicole Holofcener’s Enough Said is a rare gem in that department – bringing together two of American TV’s most adored icons, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and the late James Gandolfini, in what is the latter’s penultimate feature film.

Eva (Louis-Dreyfus) is only a mere matter of weeks away from living alone. As her daughter Ellen (Tracey Fairaway) is preparing to head off to college, and leave her single, divorced mum all by herself. On the prowl for some companionship, the masseuse meets Albert (Gandolfini) at a party, striking up an instant bond with a man currently in the exact same predicament. Enough Said comes from the mind of writer/director Nicole Holofcener, whose works tend to focus on foibles and miscommunications among small groups of upper-middle-class characters. Some of her characters can be gratingly obtuse, yet always have a grain of something relatable about them. This movie differs from her earlier work in that it veers more towards the romantic comedy genre. It's still very obviously a Holofcener film, however.
