The Writers Guild of America East is calling for the reinstatement of the Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter, tying her dismissal by the Trump administration to a release of a report on AI and copyright.
The Wgae said that Perlmutter was “unlawfully fired,” and noted that it came after the release of a report that failed to give credence to the argument that the use of copyrighted material in AI training models was a fair use.
The guild said in its statement, “The Writers Guild of America East agrees with the report’s assessment that artificial intelligence companies that train their systems through unauthorized access to copyrighted materials “goes beyond established fair use boundaries” and causes harm to copyright owners.
“The findings issued under Perlmutter’s authority stand in contrast to the opinion and financial interests of billionaires like Elon Musk and Sam Altman, Trump allies who own AI companies...

Donald Trump’s administration is attempting a hostile takeover of the Library of Congress — an agency that is part of the legislative branch and functions as its research arm in addition to maintaining the world’s largest collection of books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and recordings.
While the takeover has been framed as part of Trump’s broader purge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (Dei) content, it is the latest effort by the president and his team to subsume the role of Congress and ensure it cannot do its job.

Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of the head of the U.S. Copyright Office has generated confusion and doubt over his ability to terminate her, and also speculation about the role that a long-awaited report on AI may have played in his action.
Shira Perlmutter, who had been register of copyrights and director of the Copyright Office since 2020, was informed over the weekend that she was fired, according to sources familiar with what happened. The White House on Thursday fired the woman who appointed her, Librarian Of Congress Carla Hayden, who was named to the post by President Barack Obama.
This morning, two men delivered a letter to the Copyright Office stating that Todd Blanche, the deputy attorney general, would be appointed the acting librarian of Congress, according to a source. They also showed a separate email stating that Brian Nieves, a Justice Department official, was appointed deputy librarian, and Paul Perkins,...

Returning champion James Corson from Frederick, Maryland, faced off against Kristen VanBlargen from New York, New York, and Brian Nieves from Gambrills, Maryland. VanBlargen took an early lead when she found the first Daily Double of the game.
