2025 is halfway over, and at this point, I am realizing that most of the movies I was excited about this year have been a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean that there were no good movies released this as there have been some extremely entertaining ones. Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Anora continues to pick up speed heading into the Oscars, scoring Critics Choice Awards and DGA wins and snagging a Best Feature win at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Anora also captured Best Director (Sean Baker) and Best Lead Performance (Mikey Madison) wins. A Real Pain and Didi each earned two awards during the February 22, 2025 Spirit Awards ceremony hosted by Aidy Bryant.

On the television side, Baby Reindeer dominated with three wins. The critically acclaimed limited series took home the Best Lead Performance (Richard Gadd), Best Supporting Performance (Nava Mau), and Best Breakthrough Performance (Jessica Gunning) wins. The awards were given out across several nights with the main ceremony held on Saturday night (February 22) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif.

Mikey Madison scored another win for Anora.

On Saturday, the 25-year-old actress won the award for best lead performance, film, at the Independent Spirit Awards. While addressing the crowd, she thanked the entire cast and the director, Sean Baker.

“I want to thank Sean Baker. All of this started with you. You are an incredible director, a wonderful friend, incredible chihuahua owner,” she said “I’m so grateful that you came into my life.”

Madison was up against Amy Adams (Nightbitch), Ryan Destiny (The Fire Inside), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Keith Kupferer (Ghostlight), Demi Moore (The Substance), Hunter Schafer (Cuckoo), Justice Smith (I Saw the TV Glow), June Squibb (Thelma) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), who she said she was “honored to be nominated” alongside. The 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards have wrapped! And now we know, as the full winners list for the Spirit Awards has been revealed, just how much momentum “Anora” has going into the Oscars: a lot. It already got the most Spirits nominations with six, and it ended up winning Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison.

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Performance for “A Real Pain,” which also won Best Screenplay. “No Other Land” won Best Documentary, and the extraordinary animated film “Flow” won Best International feature.

“Baby Reindeer” collected the most prizes on the TV side with Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series going to Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning won Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series, and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series went to Nava Rau. “Shogun” won Best New Scripted Series.

The 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards — the top awards event for the independent film and television community — were handed out on Saturday from the beach in Santa Monica, Calif.

The ceremony, hosted by Saturday Night Live vet Aidy Bryant for the second year in the row, was streamed live on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels at 5 pm Et, and across other social platforms.

Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.

For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.

According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

Claressa Shields's life story is on display in The Fire Inside. Back in 2016, Universal Pictures began work on an adaptation of the Olympic Gold Medalist boxer's life story, largely based on 2015 documentary T-Rex. After nearly half a decade in development and significant production delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Fire Inside found a home at Amazon MGM Studios and never looked back.

"Never looking back" is an appropriate way to describe Shields's journey. Before she was capturing boxing championships across the world, Shields was rigorously training in her hometown of Flint, Michigan in the midst of her adolescence. She rose to Olympics status in her teenage years, and by the time she came home from securing the top prize, she was well on her way to trailblazing parity in women's sports.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series highlighting awards season’s buzziest movies continues with The Fire Inside, the boxing drama directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison in her feature helming debut from a script from Oscar-winning Moonlight screenwriter Barry Jenkins.

The Amazon MGM Studios movie hit theaters on Christmas Day after having its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. It has looking at a $4.3 million gross across the five-day holiday frame.

The movie follows the true story of Claressa Shields (played by Ryan Destiny), the Flint, Michigan high schooler who with the help of her trainer Jason Crutchfield (played by Oscar-nominated Brian Tyree Henry) rose to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in women’s boxing, going on to win multiple world titles to become one of the most decorated boxers of all time. The focus of her rise is their strong relationship. Jazmin Headley and Kylee D. Allen also star.

Mufasa may have had to wait, but the prequel is finally king at the box office.

After stumbling out of the blocks in second place last week, Mufasa: The Lion King managed to rebound with an impressive $14.7 million haul on Christmas Day. The Walt Disney movie’s five-day holiday weekend projection has topped $50 million, with some outlets forecasting north of $70 million, twice as much as it made in its opening weekend. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will hold on for second place with a still-impressive $50 million-plus five-day total, followed by Nosferatu in third. The stylish horror film is exceeding expectations, on track to earn more than $40 million, followed by A Complete Unknown with $25 million and Wicked at $20 million.

This update of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, leading to untold horror.

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” is reigning over the holiday box office. The family film, which is a prequel to “The Lion King” (both the 1994 animated classic and the less canonical 2019 photorealistic remake), earned $12 million on Thursday. That brings its domestic haul to $76.4 million.

In a change of pace, Barry Jenkins, best known for shepherding arthouse films like “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” to screens, directed “Mufasa,” which cost $200 million to produce. “Mufasa” started slowly in the U.S., losing out to Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in its opening weekend, but it seems to be catching on with the Christmas crowds. It should earn $58 million over the five-day holiday period. That means that Disney will end 2024 on a high note after dominating multiplexes with hits such as “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2.”
