Sometimes, even brilliant films end up flying under the radar, despite promising critical reception on release. The reasons can be multifold: poor marketing/release strategies, insufficient word-of-mouth, or good old bad luck. Streaming services like Prime Video can often spotlight such underrated gems, such as Jon S. Baird's dark comedy, "Filth, which recently became a hit on the streaming platform 12 years after its theatrical release. The same can be said about Rachel Morrison's feature debut "The Fire Inside," which is currently sitting at #5 on Prime Video's weekly Top 10 list (via FlixPatrol).
In case you haven't heard of this 2024 boxing drama, you can blame the film's long, troubled production, along with the fact that Amazon MGM Studios failed to create hype around such a promising story before release. Having premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival to glowing reviews, "The Fire Inside" was theatrically released in December 2024, but ended...

Fashion parties are few and far between in Santa Monica, so it feels like a moment when one happens.
Louis Vuitton delivered that moment on Thursday evening by hosting a cocktail party to introduce its new Lv Sneakerina at a location that helped draw many stylish stars, fashion insiders and influencers to the Westside. San Vicente Bungalows’ new(ish) Santa Monica outpost hosted the affair on what felt like one of those beautiful summer nights (even though it’s early April).
Checking out the scene and slipping into the new sporty Sneakerinas — featuring a hybrid design that looks almost like a sneaker mixed with a ballet flat with signatures such as the monogram pattern, monogram canvas and Lv Circle — were Haim sisters Danielle, Este and Alana (fresh from releasing their new track “Relationships”), Phoebe Dynevor, Devon Ross, Ryan Destiny, Sasha Calle, Charlotte Lawrence, Lizzy Greene, Lorraine Nicholson, Reign Judge, Lily Chee,...

Whatever you think about Shia Labeouf, his intensity and commitment is unquestionable, and he's not afraid to be outspoken. Labeouf's interesting career path was diverted among a variety of scandals and allegations, and you could hardly call it a comeback when he returned in 2023 with the film Padre Pio. Which is a shame, because he gives a great performance, and Abel Ferrara always creates fascinating films. It was perhaps just too niche a movie to give the former Transformers star the spotlight again. That likely won't change with his next movie, Salvable, which recently released its first trailer. You can watch the trailer for the film, also starring Toby Kebbell, below:
The synopsis for Salvable reads as follows:
"Shia Labeouf and Toby Kebbell star in an emotional, action-packed film about a prize fighter’s battles both inside and outside the ring. When a battered boxer past his prime finds his...

While boxing is a famous solitary sport, ultimately boiling down to a competition between two individual competitors, the close relationship between a pugilist and their trainer is tough and intimate, perfect material for a dramatic feature. Rocky's Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith), Million Dollar Baby's Maggie (Hilary Swank) and Frankie (Clint Eastwood), or Claressa Shields (Ryan Destiny) and Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry) in The Fire Inside all highlight both the fiery aspirations and the dangerous pitfalls of the boxer-trainer relationship. Uppercut, by director Torsten Ruether, benefits from Ving Rhames' strong screen presence, but a lack of believability in both character development and plotting keep the character study from working.

Arriving on a busy blue carpet for a gray day at the beach, guests at the 2025 Indie Spirit Awards agreed: It’s time to Make the Movies Messy Again.
Inside the ceremony tent, host Aidy Bryant put it perfectly when she said, “It’s been a great year for film and a bad year for human life.” Hundreds of the most important decision-makers and visionary artists championing creative independence today gathered in Santa Monica, California on Saturday to honor the best in boundary-breaking film and TV.
“Anora” and “Baby Reindeer” won the most categories in several tight races, but the show’s main source of dramatic tension came from the countless news items surrounding a tough awards season. From fraught talk of cultural fascism to economic critiques of the entertainment industry, honorees and their peers predicted an uncertain but fiery future for filmmakers, cast, and crew. Representation for women in leading or co-lead roles hit a record high in the top-grossing films of 2024, while opportunities for people of color took a sharp decline.
For the first time since Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative began evaluating each year’s 100 top-grossing films, gender equality has been reached — with 54 films featuring a woman or girl in a lead or co-lead role.
According to the study, authored by Katherine L. Neff, Smith and Dr. Katherine Pieper, the percentage of girls and women as protagonists was at an all-time high (54%) — up from 30% in 2023 and more than double what was first reported in 2007 (20%). This figure not only reached but exceeded proportional representation with the U.S. population (50.4%).

What was it with Amazon MGM Studios sports movies and the pandemic? Rachel Morrison’s “The Fire Inside” took five years to make through fits and starts. Star Ryan Destiny, who portrayed real-life Olympic boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, trained on and off again for five years as the movie was almost killed two different times. Jharrel Jerome’s story was almost more arduous. To portray champion wrestler, Anthony Robles, Jerome persevered through Covid, stopped training for three years, started again, and then saw all his work come to a halt 10 days into shooting “Unstoppable” due to the 2023 guild strikes.

20 years ago, Clint Eastwood's memorable Million Dollar Baby was crowned Best Picture at the Oscars, with the film breaking the hearts of many while also introducing them to Hilary Swank's timeless portrayal of a woman boxer. Now comes an exciting new film that switches the script of Eastwood's movie and transforms a powerful true story into great cinema. The Fire Inside tells the story of gold-medalist boxer Claressa Shields and features beloved talent both behind and in front of the camera. Its screenwriter is Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), and its lead is rising star (opposite Brian Tyree Henry) Ryan Destiny (Grown-ish), who portrays a young Michigan-native Shields with an authentic intensity that makes The Fire Inside a knockout in more ways than one.

An emotional scene unfolded inside the ballroom of Santa Monica’s Hotel Casa del Mar on Saturday afternoon as Film Independent hosted its annual Spirit Awards nominee brunch.
The event is typically a casual and cozy beachside affair filled with actors, auteurs, producers, press, executives and other industry insiders in attendance to toast the annual awards show while the organization doles out grants to rising filmmakers. Brian Tyree Henry and Ryan Destiny have teamed up for The Fire Inside. Henry has been on a roll in recent years, parlaying his breakout success from Atlanta into roles in blockbuster franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Godzilla x Kong, and Transformers. Destiny's breakout role is in The Fire Inside itself, as she received critical acclaim when the film played at the festival circuit this past fall.
That praise for Destiny came for her leading role as Claressa Shields in The Fire Inside. Claressa Shields's life story is on display in The Fire Inside. Back in 2016, Universal Pictures began work on an adaptation of the Olympic Gold Medalist boxer's life story, largely based on 2015 documentary T-Rex. After nearly half a decade in development and significant production delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, The Fire Inside found a home at Amazon MGM Studios and never looked back.
"Never looking back" is an appropriate way to describe Shields's journey. Before she was capturing boxing championships across the world, Shields was rigorously training in her hometown of Flint, Michigan in the midst of her adolescence. She rose to Olympics status in her teenage years, and by the time she came home from securing the top prize, she was well on her way to trailblazing parity in women's sports.

Mufasa may have had to wait, but the prequel is finally king at the box office.
After stumbling out of the blocks in second place last week, Mufasa: The Lion King managed to rebound with an impressive $14.7 million haul on Christmas Day. The Walt Disney movie’s five-day holiday weekend projection has topped $50 million, with some outlets forecasting north of $70 million, twice as much as it made in its opening weekend. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will hold on for second place with a still-impressive $50 million-plus five-day total, followed by Nosferatu in third. The stylish horror film is exceeding expectations, on track to earn more than $40 million, followed by A Complete Unknown with $25 million and Wicked at $20 million.

Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” is reigning over the holiday box office. The family film, which is a prequel to “The Lion King” (both the 1994 animated classic and the less canonical 2019 photorealistic remake), earned $12 million on Thursday. That brings its domestic haul to $76.4 million.
In a change of pace, Barry Jenkins, best known for shepherding arthouse films like “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” to screens, directed “Mufasa,” which cost $200 million to produce. “Mufasa” started slowly in the U.S., losing out to Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” in its opening weekend, but it seems to be catching on with the Christmas crowds. It should earn $58 million over the five-day holiday period. That means that Disney will end 2024 on a high note after dominating multiplexes with hits such as “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2.”

Sports biopics are hot right now, with new additions heading to the box office — between the male wrestling-centered Unstoppable and the female boxing-focused The Fire Inside, the latter hitting theaters this week. Rachel Morrison said that now that she’s completed her first feature film as a director, her empathy for filmmakers has grown immensely.
“I have so much more empathy for my directors,” Morrison told TheWrap. “Now as a Dp (Director of Photography), I remember at times, like [with] ‘Black Panther,’ probably the most obvious example, where Ryan [Coogler] was putting out so many fires that he didn’t have time to shot list one day that we were supposed to be shot listing. And I’m like, ‘But it’s your own movie. How could you not be shot listing right now,’ you know?”
“And then, sure enough, on this movie, I was there putting out a gazillion fires somewhere. And I was like, [cinematographer] Rina [Yang], I need you to take a pass at this shotlist,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, I get it now.’ And it’s not to say that in either case,...
