Trump Biopic ‘The Apprentice’ Dominates Politically Charged Canadian Screen Awards
Image
A Canadian Screen Awards that put marginalized voices front and center and challenged the global political landscape saw The Apprentice, a film about a young Donald Trump, dominate the national film and TV awards Sunday night in Toronto.

Director Ali Abbasi’s Trump origin story won best movie, while Sebastian Stan, the Romania-born American actor who plays the future U.S. president alongside Jeremy Strong as his consigliere Roy Cohn, earned top honors for best leading role.

Daniel Bekerman, co-producer of the Canada/Ireland/Denmark co-production The Apprentice, said when accepting the prize, “Our movie shows how the young Donald Trump amassed wealth and power by finding a dilapidated building and slapping his name on it as president. We’ll see how that works out.”

Then Bekerman turned to Trump taunting Canada as a possible 51st state for the United States. “Now he wants to slap his name on this country.

CBC Renews Freshman Drama Hit ‘Saint-Pierre’ & Four Others On “Homegrown” Slate As Network Gears Up For Budget Boost
Image
Exclusive: Canada’s CBC has renewed five series, including new procedural hit Saint-Pierre, with entertainment chief Sally Catto vowing the pubcaster would “continue to showcase homegrown storytelling.”

The news comes as CBC/Radio-Canada gears up for a boost to its budget following the victory of Mark Carney’s Liberals in Tuesday’s federal election. On the campaign trail, Carney had pledged C$150M ($109M) to strengthen local news output and promote both English- and French-language media on the public broadcaster, and the industry will be hoping he makes good on that.

Made by Hawco Productions in association with Fifth Season, Saint-Pierre stars Allan Hawco and Josephine Jobert,...

Stars: Colm Feore, Steven Morana, Holly Deveaux, Ari Millen, Art Hindle, Bobbie Phillips, Melissa D’Agostino, Marco Timpano, Mark Andrade, Nicole Stamp, Jon Cor, Supinder Wraich | Written by Matthew Campagna, Rudy Jahchan | Directed by Chris Green, Steven Morana

[Note: With the film now out on DVD in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Beast Within from its US digital release last year]

Essentially a horror version of Knives Out (or the many Agatha Christie films which inspired it) and filmed on a low-budget, of course, Beast Within is a whodunit creature feature which stars Steven Morana (Whiskey Business) and Holly Deveaux (The Mist) as a couple attending the launch party of their gaming app Werewolves Awaken. But when a guest is mysteriously found dead, they question who could be the killer, as everyone becomes a suspect and player in a deadly real-life version of the game.

For a low-budget genre film, Beast Within has some truly fantastic effects work – from the over the top violence, blood...

In a rush to determine the reason for the arrival of these cosmic anomalies, the government enlists volunteers to brave the journey to enter the doors so that we might learn more about their origin or purpose. But even these brave volunteers are not prepared for what lies beyond the threshold. The story of the doors is told through multiple perspectives: a ragtag band of high school students discover a door for the first time, volunteers explore the parallel reality beyond the threshold, and a lonesome hermit manages the...

The Hunt For The Next ‘Schitt’s Creek’: Canadian Scheme Identifies TV Series To Help Find Success In U.S.
Image
Exclusive: Schitt’s Creek has become the show to emulate when it comes to Canadian producers looking to find success outside of the Great White North.

Starting as a small comedy on Canadian public broadcaster, it has become a huge hit in the U.S. and around the world after launching on Pop TV and subsequently Netflix and stands a good chance at this weekend’s Emmys. It is one of a handful of Canadian shows, along with the likes of Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol, to become as successful as any comedy south of the border.

Now, a government-backed scheme has identified six Canadian producers with projects that they hope to replicate this success.

The Canadian Creative Accelerator, which is backed by the Trade Commissioner Service of the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles and the Government of Quebec, has highlighted six shows that will receive help and money to break out in the States.

Guidestones' Premiere and Impressions: An Episode Review
Guidestones.org has its debut episode online, and the content it delivers is certainly mysterious as the monolith that stands in Elbert County, Georgia. The game is afoot, and this interactive online series is ready to tease as well as tantalize.

The producers of this show certainly understand the medium of creating a television show for the internet generation well. When plenty of distractions can arise while web surfing, the segments offered here are short. The first episode clocks in at about three minutes and it ends with a cliffhanger. The length is perfect to build the suspense and the production quality is in par with the summer blockbusters.

Viewers will have to either wait for the next episode by joining a mailing list, or visit on their own terms. Either way, this series will no doubt draw new viewers in. By signing up, supplemental material will be emailed out.

Mystery Suspense Thriller Guidestones to Debut Online!
*launching February 2012

Just what purpose does the Georgia Guidestones serve? To the people who have been to Elbert County in the state of Georgia to see them, what exists there are six granite slabs with inscriptions. Writer and director Jay Ferguson has observed that the writing inscribed on them is very prescriptive. His web series, "Guidestones," will explore possible answers in a 50-episode run.

“They really do seem to offer advice for a 'future' civilization,” says this director. "Perhaps these 'commandments' have come from what the builders presume to be good practices in past civilization building?”

Each episode will have a varying run time from a minute to five each, and, depending on what viewers choose to receive to view, get offered tantalizing clues of the 'truth.' In order to erect this megalithic structure, great planning, labour and cost were required. This series will offer a new delivery device...
