Biography

    • Dirk Bracke was born on June 4, 1953 in Sint-Gillis-Waas, East Flanders, Belgium. He was a writer, known for Black (2015), Hashtag (2017) and Bo (2010). He died on June 15, 2021 in Stekene, Flanders, Belgium.

Trivia

  • His work has been translated into Danish, German, Spanish and Polish.
  • The big breakthrough came in 1996 with "Het uur Nul", a story about a teenager with AIDS. Bracke has found his style: he writes adult stories, tailored to young people. His style is direct and straightforward, even when it comes to sex or violence. And no, the story doesn't always end well. Therefore Bracke is called the bad boy of Flemish youth literature.
  • At the beginning of February 2021, Bracke himself announces that he - with regret in the heart - has to say goodbye to being a writer. His state of health no longer permits writing. He did not give more details about his health. "I just can't write anymore. If I read for 10 minutes, my eyes get tired," Bracke tells . "I wouldn't know what to do without writing, so to speak, but I have no choice.".
  • He was one of the best-known Flemish youth authors.
  • Bracke made it a point of honor to only develop a story on a certain theme after thorough research. He immersed himself in drugs, war, incest, prostitution and gang violence. For "Back" and "Black" he went on patrol with the Brussels police, and for "Het Engelenhuis" he talked with interned teenage girls.
