On Set With Max’s ‘Ravalear,’ a Gritty, Semi-Autobiographical Chronicle of One Family’s Fight Against Gentrification in the Heart of Barcelona
Image
Barcelona, Spain — On a bustling street in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, past halal butchers, tattoo parlors and generations-old Catalan cafés, a production crew quietly turns the camera on a modest building that houses Can Mosques, a fictional restaurant at the heart of “Ravalear,” Max’s latest Spanish original series.

The scene feels uncannily real, and that’s the point. Created by filmmaker Pol Rodríguez and inspired by his own family’s experiences running the hugely popular neighborhood bar Can Lluis for more than a century, “Ravalear” is a raw, immersive series that mixes the language and tropes of thriller and family drama genres to plunge viewers into a Barcelona caught in the throes of gentrification, identity and survival.

Max’s new six-episode series, produced by Barcelona’s Oscar-nominated “Robot Dreams” producer Arcadia Motion Pictures, is set to premiere in 2026. More than just another high-end European drama. It’s a deeply personal story of memory,...

Goya Nominations Include Pedro Almodóvar, Julianne Moore & Tilda Swinton, But Leave Their Golden Lion Winner ‘The Room Next Door’ Out Of Best Picture Race
Image
Spain’s Academia de Cine has unveiled its list of nominations for the 39th Goya Awards, the country’s equivalent to the Oscar. Leading the field is Marcel Barrena’s biographical drama El 47, with 14 mentions. It’s followed by thriller La Infiltrada (Undercover) at 13.

Also in the mix is Segundo Premio (Saturn Return) with 11 nods. The movie about real-life rock band Los Planetas was Spain’s submission for the International Feature Oscar, though it did not make AMPAS’ shortlist cut which was revealed yesterday.

Meanwhile, Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, The Room Next Door, scored 10 nominations including Best Director and a pair of Best Actress nods for Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton. It did not surface in the Goyas’ Best Picture race, despite taking the top prize Golden Lion in Venice earlier this year, his first ever top A-list festival prize.

The Goyas will be handed out on February 8 in Granada.

Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in La Chambre d'à côté (2024)
Spain’s Goya Nominations: Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Snubbed for Best Picture
Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in La Chambre d'à côté (2024)
The Spanish film academy gave a surprise snub to its best-known director when Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door was not nominated for best film for the Goya Film Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.

The Room Next Door picked up 13 Goya nominations, including best director for Almodóvar and best acting nominations for both of the film’s leads, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, but the film was left out of the best picture category. Perhaps the language barrier — it’s Almodóvar’s first English-language feature — counted against it among Spanish academy voters.

Instead, the Goya’s best picture race will include five Spanish-language features: Casa en flames from director Dani de la Orden, Marcel Barrena’s El 47, La estrella azul from Javier Macipe, Arantxa Echevarría’s La infiltrada, and Segundo premio from director Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, which was Spain’s official Oscar submission this year.

‘The Teacher Who Promised the Sea’ Rolls Out Sales, Notable International Box Office for Filmax
Image
One fast-consolidating industry lore, compounded by Toronto dealing – or lack of it – has it that non-English-language dramas don’t sell.

Try telling that, however, to Filmax. “The Teacher Who Promised the Sea,” chronicling the tragedy of barbaric slaughter in the Spanish Civil War, has not only sold but opened in Italy and Australia to boffo box office numbers for an art film.

In Italy, bought by Officine Ubu and released on Sept. 19, “The Teacher” has grossed €551,066, opened on 84 screens, a notable spread with no big name director nor huge stars.

In Australia, released by upscale move bastion Palace Films, “The Teacher” is still playing cinemas, powering to $436,744 from a July 26 bow on 22 screens.

The drama has just opened in Romania and Russia and will do so briefly in Austria and Alemania. These bows follow sales by Filmax – which produces with Minoría Absoluta, Lastor Media, Mestres Films Aie – to Nachshon Films in Israel,...

‘Mamífera’ Director Liliana Torres on the Stigma of “Non-Maternity” and Why Catalan Film Is Better Than Ever
Image
This year, 22 Catalan productions have been selected for the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival, highlighting just how much the region’s film industry is booming.

Among them is Mamífera, directed by Liliana Torres. The Barcelona-born filmmaker wanted to tackle the subject of “non-maternity” — a woman’s decision not to have children — in response to a stigma she has felt personally.

Torres’ project, screening in San Sebastian this week, follows Lola (played by Maria Rodríguez Soto) and Bruno (Enric Auquer), two 40-something-year-olds in a happy relationship. As Lola watches her friends and family obsess over either their own children or having children, she is shocked to find herself pregnant and unhappy about it. Everyone around her is so connected to the experience of motherhood, it causes Lola to grapple with the idea that something is wrong with her.

The film offers a poignant commentary on the societal pressure placed on women...

‘Mamífera’ Review: Engaging, Well-Acted Spanish Drama About an Unexpected Pregnancy
Image
Spoiler Alert: The last two paragraphs of this review contains spoilers.

“Mamífera” introduces 40-year-old Lola (Maria Rodríguez Soto) having tender sex with boyfriend Bruno (Enric Auquer), standing up in the shower. Then, sitting on their bed, they dry off together, him seated behind her, carefully using a hairdryer on her hair, and at one point playfully directing its jet of warm air down the front of her panties. In this short but intimate sequence, writer-director Liliana Torres conjures worlds of easy, contented empathy between two people who know each other’s bodies very well indeed, but have not grown remotely tired of one another.

Unbeknownst to Lola and Bruno, their bond is about to be tested by a pregnancy so unexpected that it isn’t detected until 10 weeks gestation. It’s worlds away from the experience of Lola’s friend Judit (Ruth Llopis), who is coincidentally trying to conceive via IVF,...

A House On Fire Review: De la Orden Sparks Meaningful Intergenerational Dialogue
Alberto San Juan, Emma Vilarasau, Clara Segura, Macarena García, Enric Auquer, Maria Rodríguez Soto, and Jose Pérez-Ocaña in Casa en flames (2024)
The Costa Brava coastline provides a picturesque backdrop for the dysfunction simmering just below the surface in Dani de la Orden’s A House on Fire. Bringing her adult children and their partners to the family’s beachside home, Montse hopes to reconnect over the planned sale of the property. But long-buried tensions have the family metaphorically and, at one point, literally, sparking.

De la Orden deftly balances humorous moments with more poignant scenes, exploring the turmoil bubbling beneath each family member’s polished exterior. Though the children seem to view their weekend stay as little more than an obligation to their mother, their issues slowly emerge. David’s perpetual man-child act masks distress over being sidelined, while Julia channels her unhappiness into flirtations. But it’s Vilarasau’s internally imploding Montse who owns the film, her stifled pain and disappointment shrewdly hidden until volcanic tensions can no longer be restrained.

Spain’s Goya Awards: J.A. Bayona’s ‘Society of the Snow’ Wins Best Picture, Director as Sigourney Weaver Receives an International Goya
Image
Netflix Original “The Society of the Snow” won best picture and director for J.A. Bayona at Saturday night’s 38th Spanish Academy Goya Awards.

Those plaudits were two of a total 12 prizes, the third-highest kudos count for any title in the Goyas’ near 40-year history.

The lineup of best picture nominees was, however, a reminder in itself of the high quality and diversity of Spain’s current film production output. These took in Estibaliz’s Urresola Berlin triple winner “20,000 Species of Bees,” David Trueba’s real-life tender love story “Jokes & Cigarettes,” Isabel Coixet’s probing “Un Amor” and Victor Erice’s “Close Your Eyes,” an “aching ode to film, time and memory,” Variety wrote in its review.

Even after Bayona took best director there was still genuine suspense whether he would also win best picture, after best adapted screenplay went to “Robot Dreams” and “Jokes & Cigarettes” took best actor for David Verdaguer.

‘Sky Rojo’ Final Season: The Wildest Girls Return to Netflix in Their Final Act
Image
Sky Rojo is a thriller series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato starring Verónica Sánchez, Lali Espósito and Yany Prado.

Sky Rojo re-does itslef in this third, last and almost melancholic season in a story that wishes to be redone as it finishes and manages to do so with the force and personality of a series which you will either love or hate precisely because of its force, provocation and characters at their edgiest.

Sky Rojo is an attractive combination of a thriller that is full of thugs and a road movie, also tough about some girls who escape from a bordello and leave behind an endless series of bodies, persecutions and situations that are embarrassing, hot, romantic and mad… a combination that has delighted many and, because of its humor which sometimes crosses a line between correctness, has not become popular with the more “family style” audience.

‘Sky Rojo’ Season 2 Trailer Drops Ahead of July Premiere
Image
Netflix Spain has dropped a trailer for the highly anticipated second season of its high-octane Spanish thriller series “Sky Rojo,” coming to the platform worldwide on July 23.

Shifting from the Spanish noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” “Sky Rojo” opts for a brightly colored, neon palette to mix several genres into something its creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” In another shift, the duo has also cut each of the season’s eight episodes to a punchy 25-minute runtime.

In “Sky Rojo” season one, three exotic dancers are forced into prostitution after becoming victims of a human trafficking scheme. After a confrontation with club-owner-turned-pimp Romeo turned violent, the three broke from their chains of bondage and fled across the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife. Spanish actor Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine singer-actor Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban up-and-comer Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”) play the three lead roles in the series.

‘Money Heist’ Creators Alex Pina, Esther Martinez on ‘Sky Rojo,’ Netflix Spain’s Most Ambitious Series to Date
Image
Netflix Spain’s most ambitious series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch in nine days time, premiering worldwide on the platform March 19.

Shifting from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” the new series utilizes a brightly colored, grindhouse aesthetic for the new series in a mix of genres its creators have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” The series is also a departure in format for the two, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy, 25-minute episodes, to be copied in the series’ already-confirmed second season.

“Sky Rojo” is headlined by the international trio of Spain’s Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine superstar actor-singer-songwriter Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban standout Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”). The three play exotic dancers-turned-prostitutes trapped in the world of sex trafficking, each with a dagger hanging over their head.

‘Money Heist’ Creators’ New Netflix Original ‘Sky Rojo’ Gets Release Date, Action-Packed Trailer
Image
Netflix Spain’s most highly-anticipated series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch worldwide on March 19. To celebrate the premiere announcement, Netflix has shared a new high-octane trailer sure to get viewers’ blood pumping.

Accompanied by a punk rock cover of Rosalia’s global mega-hit “Con Altura,” the trailer demonstrates how Pina and Martínez will shift away from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist” and embrace a drug-fueled, brightly colored, blood-spattered pallet for the new series in a mix of genres the two have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” One thing sure to remain however, is Pina and Martínez’s penchant for humor, evident in the trailer’s scant dialogue, limited to “Meow” and “Good boy.”

“Sky Rojo” is also a departure in format for the showrunners, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy,...

Mariano Barroso in Los Goya 28 edición (2014)
Series review: La línea invisible - Series / Reviews - Spain
Mariano Barroso in Los Goya 28 edición (2014)
Mariano Barroso avails himself of a cast of first-rate actors, toplined by Antonio de la Torre and Álex Monner, and a somewhat classical narrative as he recreates the origins of Eta. The date was set for this Wednesday, 8 April, at 10 pm: the team was to present the online premiere of La línea invisible (lit. “The Invisible Line”), each person from his or her own home, suitably dressed for the occasion. And so director Mariano Barroso and lead actors Àlex Monner, Antonio de la Torre, Anna Castillo, Asier Etxeandia, Patrick Criado and Enric Auquer introduced the first two episodes of this series, which is free to air and to view (via the Movistar + YouTube channel), and which describes, from a simultaneously historical and personal perspective, how the terrorist group Eta came into being. This was an entity that left mortal victims strewn not only across the Basque Country,...
