The Madness TV Review: Colman Domingo is great in Netflix’s contemporary take on The Fugitive
Image
Plot: Muncie Daniels is a respected media pundit who thinks he has it all. When he’s framed for the murder of a white supremacist, he must clear his name, protect his family, and unravel a high-level conspiracy before time runs out.

Review: The concept for the hit 1960s series The Fugitive spawned an award-winning box office hit in 1993 starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones but failed to ignite much buzz when it was rebooted on the small screen twice, in 2000 and 2020. While it does not share any official connections with the story of Dr. Richard Kimble and his search for a one-armed man who killed his wife, the new Netflix series The Madness may be the closest anyone has gotten to capturing the paranoia and tension that made The Fugitive so good. Led by Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo in one of his best performances to date, The Madness is...

Ava DuVernay’s ‘Origin,’ Max’s ‘Hacks,’ Showtime’s ‘Fellow Travelers’ Among Humanitas Prize 2024 Winners
Image
“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.

“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. This award show that is about doing something with this medium that matters. Yes, entertainment matters, but we have such a powerful voice, such a powerful platform. So I commend everyone that’s trying to say something.”

Snowfall's Christine Horn Breaks Down Black Diamond and Dallas' Tension with Louie and Jerome, Expanded Roles
Image
Snowfall director Damian Marcano wanted to show another side of strippers-turned-assassins Black Diamond and Dallas, so he explored them through motherhood.

The end result was an awkward-but-comical interaction in last week’s Episode 3 between the pair and Louie and Jerome, as Black Diamond and Dallas dropped off their children at elementary school. Louie told the women, who now work for Franklin, she would and could forgive them for nearly killing her if they used their exotic dancer connections to plant seeds of usurpation in Mello’s head.

Snowfall Writer Breaks Down the Return of White Rob and Irene's Fate Amid Anti-Asian Sentiments
Image
The fastest way to separate die-hard Snowfall fans from trendy ones is dropping White Rob’s name.

Played by actor Taylor Kowalski, White Rob is an old friend of Franklin’s from high school, a member of his O.G. crew and the one who introduced him to his first plug, Avi. That’s why Rob’s brief but significant appearance in Season 4 mattered to hardcore Snowfallers who reveled in seeing his familiar face.

WriteGirl Event Taps Hollywood Actors and Screenwriters to Support Young, Female Writers
Keiko Agena
Actors and screenwriters came together Saturday night to support the young women involved in WriteGirl at the organization’s annual Lights, Camera, WriteGirl! event.

The organization empowers girls to share their voices with a community of female writers. In the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood, Calif., scenes and monologues written by the girls earlier in the day were performed by actors Keiko Agena (“Gilmore Girls”), Kelsey Scott (“How To Get Away with Murder”), Aasha Davis (“Friday Night Lights”), Adam Tsekhman (“Legends of Tomorrow”), and Ted Cannon (“Justified”).

The scenes ranged from comical discussion between a health conscious father and his junk-food-loving daughter to an emotional monologue where a boy wished he was no longer invisible. After the skits, a panel of screenwriters provided commentary about the writing style.

Executive director of WriteGirl Keren Taylor said that during the day the mentors and girls focus on “getting away from clichés, talking...

HBO Inks Development Deal With Black & Sexy TV’s ‘The Couple’
Black & Sexy TV is an online entertainment and lifestyle network founded by Dennis Dortch, Numa Perrier, Brian Ali Harding, and Jeanine Daniels that produces the kind of content its name would lead you to think it produces. That is, It focuses on programming for a “young, progressive, Black audience who seek a truer reflection of their modern culture.” The company is adamant about its independence, too, but don’t let that and the dated Black & Sexy TV website lead you to believe the quality of its productions are in any way inferior. The people behind the brand have an impressive pedigree, Plus, they just inked a development deal with HBO. The premium cable and satellite television channel with more than 140 million subscribers worldwide will develop The Couple, a realistic comedy web series about a heterosexual relationship with the kind of dialogue you’d expect in a mumblecore flick, but the...
