There was a time when Netflix itself would have been considered sci-fi. High-definition movies on demand in your living room, for a monthly fee, sometimes day and date with theatrical releases? Yeah, not a thing until pretty recently, which might make you wonder how many of the sci-fi features actually on Netflix are in danger of coming true eventually.
Netflix isn't just a studio and purveyor of original movies, though -- it's also home to former theatrical releases from other studios, which linger on the service for short and long terms. So when the time came to round up the best sci-fi films on the service, as of this writing at least, we've included some of those too. Toho, Warner Bros. and Sony have made deals with the streamer that would seem to ensure decent tenures for the ones cited below, but it's an unpredictable world, one in which streaming...

They Cloned Tyrone is a 2023 sci-fi mystery film directed by Juel Taylor, in his feature film directorial debut. The film’s story centers on a motley trio living in the fictional though recognizable Glen, a neighborhood replete with its own thriving criminal ecosystem. There’s the drug dealer Fontaine (John Boyega), the prostitute Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), and Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), a cartoonish pimp, all of whom find themselves in a web of intrigue after Fontaine is shot dead yet wakes up in his bed the next day. Eager to discover how Fontaine lives on, despite being fatally gunned down in front of Slick Charles and Yo-Yo, the trio set off on an impromptu investigation into the hidden activities of the Glen. The critically acclaimed film boasts a particular strain of home-grown conspiracy and spins a simultaneously bleak and entertaining sci-fi tale about circumstance, autonomy, governmental corruption and the importance of identity.

Scripted by Tony Rettenmaier (They Cloned Tyrone), Kodak SuperXX will be “set against an atmospheric Los Angeles.” The story follows Linh (Tran), a quiet woman whose solitary life revolves around her work as a darkroom developer at one of the city’s last boutique photo labs. I am surprised that, despite having a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, a Netflix science fiction movie has still not been greenlit for a sequel. Instead of merely focusing on one genre, Netflix seems to take a well-rounded approach to expanding its content repository. The streaming giant keeps adding new content from diverse genres to ensure that it is serving a wide range of audience preferences. However, despite the streaming website's best efforts to cater to all tastes and interests, its sci-fi content has always emerged on top.
Some of the most-viewed movies on Netflix, like Don't Look Up, Bird Box, Leave the World Behind, and The Adam Project, belong to the sci-fi genre. The same pattern can be noticed for TV shows as well, given how Stranger Things is one of Netflix's biggest and most profitable IPs. To expand its sci-fi catalog, Netflix released a compelling sci-fi conspiracy thriller in...

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th… and with that date right around the corner, a featurette has arrived online to give us a look at the “dysfunctional family” of characters at the heart of the story. The Sci-Fi genre consists of some of the most inventive and life-changing films because by the very definition of the word the creators have to invent a fictional future or technology and while some of the films in this genre give us spectacle others give us a story that makes us think about the future and how our world is changing for better or for worse. So, today we thought of listing the best new sci-fi films you can watch at home right now and in this list, we didn’t include any film released before 2023.

Taraji P. Henson is going to keep telling her truth.
As she took the stage at the 2024 ABFF Honors on Sunday night, “The Color Purple” star pointed to a tattoo on her left bicep that spells out those words exactly: “The Truth.”
“If you are alive and God blessed you with another day to live, it is your job to tell your truth,” Henson told the crowd gathered for the American Black Film Festival’s marquee gala. “Because by you telling your truth, you set yourself free and somebody else free. When we stay quiet, nothing changes. The squeaky wheel gets fixed.”
That ideology is something Henson’s learned to keep close over the years, particularly when it comes to navigating Hollywood.
Late last year, Henson spoke her truth and sparked an important conversation about the unique challenges Black actresses face. She used her platform during “The Color Purple” press...

The trailer for the film dropped on Wednesday and fans couldn’t help but notice the similarity to James Gunn’s films. One particular promotion in the trailer for the producer of the film also irked the fans.

They Cloned Tyrone should have been recognized at the Oscars. It's a brilliant story with entertaining chemistry and witty dialogue written by Juel Taylor. Francine Jamison-Tanchuck's costume design for the film was masterful but was snubbed by the Academy. Saira Haider's editing in They Cloned Tyrone was precise and impactful, deserving of an Oscar nomination.
On the morning of Jan. 23, 2024, nominees were announced for the 96th Academy Awards. The year began, as they usually do, with so much promise. This was, after all, supposed to be the year that DC came roaring back, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the long-awaited The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Marvel had its own big slate. We were to be in a Shangri-La of screen superheroes. Yet in the end, it appeared the comic book movies failed audiences.
Or did they? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, based on comics from the 1980s, is one of the top animated movies of the year. David Fincher’s stylish The Killer is based on a French graphic novel. And of course, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is a towering achievement even beyond the medium of animation.
In other corners, movies based on toys, for the most part, are looked down upon and are considered jokes. But here, too, 2023 surprised us.

Was 2023 a good year for movies? The end of each moviegoing year always raises that age-old question and, as always, the ultimate answer remains squarely in the eye of the beholder. For most, that tends to come down to the most populist theatrical offerings. If the latest superhero sequels and nostalgic remakes and most highly-anticipated blockbusters failed to live up to their crowd-pleasing billing, well, at least there's always next year. But for those of us who spend entirely too much time and effort on the hunt for hidden gems beneath the surface, international cinema from the most exciting talent around the globe, and overlooked indies that didn't have millions of marketing dollars to throw around, that turns out to be the wrong question to ask in the first place.
What we should be talking about is whether we've caught up on all the undeniably great movies readily available to us,...

It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.”
At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent.
Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.”
“The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S. and Canada.

In January 2009, during a midnight screening at Sundance, Michael Jai White knew he had something special in Black Dynamite. Nine months later, the Blaxploitation spoof’s limited theatrical release and minimal box office gross didn’t stop its immediate fate as a cult classic. Demand for a sequel soon followed, and so White, as co-writer of the film, penned a direct sequel that struggled to get off the ground due to creative differences with a producer.
Consequently, White went back to the drawing board and pursued an idea he had at the same time as Black Dynamite’s conception. If that action-comedy paid homage to Blaxploitation films through parody, then it would only make sense to take a similar approach with other genres. So, White revisited his earlier ideas for three other genre exercises including a horror movie, a kung fu movie and a Western. That Western is now known as Outlaw Johnny Black,...

Juel Taylor's They Cloned Tyrone starring John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris has amassed considerable success on Netflix. In this immediate fan-favorite, Boyega's character Fontaine is cloned by a corporation for nefarious purposes (monetary gain). With many of its absurdities, They Cloned Tyrone stands out as one of the titles in an ongoing Black surrealist movement alongside the likes of the media like Atlanta by Donald Glover and I'm a Virgo by Boots Riley.

Netflix's They Cloned Tyrone director Juel Taylor has discussed the movie's surprising epilogue reveal.
Taylor, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, talked about why the story did not center on the titular character Tyrone. "Tyrone is just semantics at a certain point. When we were conceiving the story, we pitched it without a script. So we sold the movie before we wrote the script, and we had a lot of different iterations before we wrote it. And originally, Frog was gonna be Tyrone," he said. "He would've had old-man makeup, and he'd be dressed in a certain way that you don't quite recognize that it's the same actor. And then at a certain point in the movie, you'd realize, 'Oh, the reason this dude knows all this stuff is because he's literally you [Tyrone].'"

They Cloned Tyrone filmmaker Juel Taylor is the latest recipient of Guillermo del Toro’s storied generosity.
Whether it’s providing script notes to Charlie Day or putting in a good word for André Øvredal, there are countless tales of del Toro looking out for his filmmaking peers. And Taylor, who previously co-wrote Creed II, now has his own unforgettable anecdote in regard to They Cloned Tyrone, his critically acclaimed directorial debut that Netflix released opposite Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21.
Towards the end of the film (spoilers ahead), Fontaine (John Boyega) and Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) devise a plan to infiltrate the underground organization that’s been conducting sinister experiments on their neighborhood, the Glen. And Taylor intended to capture their elaborate scheme through an Ocean’s Eleven-like montage that cleverly revealed the mechanics of their mission. As financial barriers to filmmaking tech lower — while barriers to higher education continue to rise and student loans remain a legislative flashpoint — film programs nationwide have had to consider how to adapt to stand out.
Many programs have added LED walls (Uncsa, DePaul) and are building backlots that rival Warner Bros. (Scad). Some upstarts are successfully climbing the ranks of a crowded field — Brooklyn College’s Feirstein is only 8 years old — while others are doubling down on long-established reputations: Think Wesleyan (a liberal arts school committed to celluloid) or USC (a big program with an even bigger alumni network). All the while scholarships, financial aid, tuition expenses and postgraduate grants are becoming more paramount to would-be student decision-making.
With all this in mind, THR has compiled its 13th annual list of the nation’s top film programs.

What would Hollywood be without a good ole Blaxploitation film? And now that “They Cloned Tyrone” has hit Netflix screens, conversations about the Blaxploitation movies that crawled so that “They Cloned Tyrone” could pimp walk have come to the forefront.
Juel Taylor’s film welcomes watchers to The Glen, a normal, everyday neighborhood where its predominately Black residents live out their lives shopping, going to church and enjoying the fruits of their labor. However, beneath the surface, but right in front of their eyes, the government is executing a plot to keep the community in an endless cycle of unhealthy behavior that ultimately blocks them from mental and financial wellness.
Like many Blaxploitation films, “They Cloned Tyrone” creatively calls out and highlights the systemic issues Black community faces while also celebrating Black culture and Black people’s perseverance.

Teyonah Parris has stepped into plenty of shoes in her career — from “Dear White People” and “Mad Men” to “If Beale Street Could Talk” and, more recently, as Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau. But no shoes quite compare to the mustard yellow, thigh-high boots and chaps she wore as Yo-Yo in Netflix’s new pulpy conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone.”
“The minute I put on all those elements, I felt Yo-Yo,” Parris told Variety at a press junket for the film in late June.
Parris laughed brightly as she recalls slipping into the role — a working girl who teams up with Fontaine (John Boyega), a local dope boy, and her pimp, Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), to expose a government conspiracy that touches every corner of their community, from the barbershop and the beauty salon to the local fried chicken joint.

Teyonah Parris’ decision to wear her natural hair is part of her “very intentional” goal to ensure Black women feel seen on-screen — and in all spaces — just as they are.
Parris, an NAACP Image award winner, has shown up and shown out in every role she’s been cast in, from “Candyman” (2021) to “WandaVision” (2021) to the “Photograph” (2020) and more. And in every role — including those mentioned — and at least for the last decade, she’s made it a point to wear her natural hair along the way.
In Juel Taylor’s “They Cloned Tyrone,” Parris continued her mission.
“I’ve been very intentional for maybe a little over a decade now about making sure that as a Black woman, and as Black women, we feel seen in these spaces. Just how we are. How are we naturally are.” Parris, who played Yo-Yo in the film, told TheWrap.

There’s a scene in John Singleton’s 1991 masterpiece, Boyz n the Hood, in which Laurence Fishburne, playing a man who goes by ‘Furious,’ delivers an impromptu sermon in front of a real estate billboard. He asks his curious onlookers, “Why is it that there’s a gunshop on almost every corner in this community?”
“Why?” an older resident asks.
“I’ll tell you why,” Furious replies. “The same reason that there’s a liquor store on almost every corner in the black community. Why? They want us to kill ourselves.”
They Cloned Tyrone, the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who co-wrote the script for Creed II, and was one of a bevy of writers to take a crack at Space Jam: A New Legacy, poses similar questions to those asked by Furious, but takes a far more eccentric approach.

The reign of “Queen Charlotte” isn’t over yet. During the week of July 17-July 23, the Shondaland title joined Netflix’s most popular titles list at No. 10 with 80.3 million views to date. The “Bridgerton” prequel series opened on May 4 and earned 148.28 million hours viewed on the Netflix Top 10 chart during the May 1-7 viewing window, making the show the most-viewed title during the viewing window.
On the non-english side, “Bird Box Barcelona” leads the Netflix Top 10 this week with 19 million total views. Like the original US film starring Sandra Bullock, the European film follows a similar sinister force that threatens to destroy humanity. Sebastián and his daughter begin their own great adventure of survival in Barcelona. The film opened in the No. 1 spot on the Non-English Films List following its July 14 debut.
A newcomer on the English-language film chart, “They Cloned Tyrone” cracked the list at No. 3 with 6.3 million views.

Dearest gentle readers, it’s a big day for the Bridgerton-verse!
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story has officially been crowned one of Netflix’s most popular English-language TV series of all time. With 80.3M views to date, the prequel series now sits at No. 10, replacing The Watcher.
Since Netflix only releases viewership numbers for the Top 10 shows each week, it’s unclear how many views the series received during the week of July 17 to July 23 to push it over the edge. The series hasn’t appeared in the weekly Top 10 since June.
Queen Charlotte now joins both seasons of Bridgerton on the honor list (Season 1 sits at No. 4 while Season 2 is No. 8).
This was made possible after Netflix adjusted its viewership metrics in June. At the eleventh hour for Queen Charlotte, the streamer extended its measurement window from 28 days to 91 days, giving the series plenty of time to make it...

They Cloned Tyrone's confusing timeline is intentional, with retro costuming and set pieces representing various years, creating a muddled feeling of time and place. Despite the '70s and '90s aesthetic, the movie is set in the modern day, as evidenced by references to President Obama and bitcoins, and the protagonist's style reflecting late 2010s fashion trends. The intentional confusion about the setting strengthens the sci-fi plotline, with the long-running government conspiracy feeling more complex and manipulative due to the director pulling from various decades.
