This Day That Year: Ajay Bahl’s Stark B. A. Pass
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of his This Day That Year, turns the spotlight on Ajay Bahl’s drama B. A. Pass which released in 2012.

Ajay Bahl’s B. A. Pass is set in present-day Delhi. Paharganj, to be more precise. Bustling with sights sounds smells of doom and despair it is a gripping story of a young financially-challenged man’s journey into a world of prostitution. We could say, we’ve never seen this before. And we would be as close to the truth as this film tries to get.

The taut screenplay by Ritesh Shah never allows room for superfluous moments. We follow Mukesh’s descent into a life of compromised morality with an absence of condemnation and censure. Mukesh’s environment and his circumstances as a displaced orphan are not exploited to generate pathos.

No one in this film allows us to feel sorry for the derelict lives.

Review‘Upstarts’ is a Netflix original film produced by BandraWest Pictures and directed by Udai Singh Pawar.Saraswati DatarNetflixEverything that we take for granted around us today was once just a big idea in a regular person’s head — televisions, smartphones, cars, iPods, cab services and even online shopping. There were men and women somewhere who dared to dream and achieve what was then seemingly impossible. Upstarts, a Netflix original film produced by BandraWest Pictures and directed by Udai Singh Pawar, is an ode to those who dream, and to those whose dreams both succeed and fail. The film hits the ground running, with Kapil (Priyanshu Painyuli), Yash ( Chanrachoor Rai) and Vinay (Shadab Kamal), helping Vinay elope with his girlfriend. That grand plan fails but while waiting at the station Kapil, bitten hard by the start-up bug, suggests an elopement service. His friends laugh it off, but when a man...

Sukhwinder Singh declines to sing a song with word ‘Ghanta’
Singer Sukhwinder Singh was offered the song titled ‘Babaji ka ghanta’ from Zeishan Quadri’s Meeruthiya Gangsters. But the singer turned down the offer as he found the title improper. When questioned, director Zeishan Qadri confirmed the same saying, “Yes, he (Sukhwinder) was not cool with the title. We were pursuing him for almost 10-15 days, but then everyday he demanded some change the lyrics. I didn’t want to do that so I let him go.” Nevertheless, Quadri found a perfect substitute for Sukhwinder in Divya Kumar, who recently sung the chartbuster song ‘Jee Karda…’ from Badlapur.

Talking about it, Quadri stated, “Sukhwinder was the first option, but when he turned it down, we approached Divya and he instantly agreed. In fact, he has recorded the song couple of days ago and it has turned out to be really good.”

When asked the debutant director if Meeruthiya Gangsters will...

Reflections 2013: Best Films 2013
2013 has been somewhat of a good year for Bollywood. There were the hits, the flops, the critically acclaimed and the critically panned releases that touched the hearts of millions of film fanatics. To celebrate the best which Bollywood has offered in 2013, BollySpice presents to you our official countdown list. We have made it all the more interesting by dividing the Best Films category by genre. Hindi remakes rights of Pawan Kumar’s “Lucia” was bought by Fox Star Studios

Year 2013 turned out to be an unprecedented year for Indian indie films! While Bollywood continued to break all records riding high on star power, Indies also began a humble yet significant journey towards finding mainstream distribution. The Lunchbox piggybacked on star director Karan Johar as presenter while Ship of Theseus found support from filmmaker Kiran Rao. Shahid was backed by Disney-utv and B.A. Pass was acquired by Bollywood producer Bharat Shah. While these films enjoyed successful run in international film festivals, they also got acceptance from theatre-going audiences back home.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 indie gems that we think ruled the roost this year. At the outset, we would like to mention two remarkable films, Anand Gandhi’s Ship of Theseus and Hansal Mehta’s Shahid, which released theatrically this year but had been...

Special Report: B.A. Pass Press Conference
The faded, vintage glamour of the Delite Cinema provided the ideal location to host the press conference of new release B.A. Pass. We caught up with the stars and director of the film at the cinema, little more than a stone’s throw from Delhi’s Paharganj, where much of Ajay Bahl’s debut was shot.

Despite getting its theatrical release on August 2, the project has already achieved critical acclaim at film festivals from Delhi to London and Montreal to Paris. Lead actor Shadab Kamal was also the recipient of a ‘Best Actor’ award at the Osian Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema.

“Honestly speaking, I was not expecting it. I didn’t even know Osian had an award for ‘Best Actor’.”said Kamal. “I was with my friends hanging out and enjoying myself when I got the call that I had won.”

Joy Mukherjee
Crowd of releases again this Friday
Joy Mukherjee
The late Joy Mukherjee jostles with 20-something year old debutant Akash Chopra in the theatres this week. It looks like a chaos of releases again.

It's the pre-Eid week when Ramzan is at its peak and a sizeable chunk of the audience stays away from movie theatres. Yet we have a very strange spectrum of releases lined up for Friday.

Joy Mukherjee who passed away last year resurfaces in Love In Bombay, a 42-year old project directed by Joy (his second directorial effort after Humsaaya) that has the distinction of every actor and technician being dead except the lovely Waheeda Rehman...God grant her a long life.

The late prolific filmmaker Ramanand Sagar's grandson Akash Chopra makes his screen debut in the wedding comedy Rabba Main Kya Karoon directed by Amrit Sagar who gave us that excellent war film 1971. The film has an interesting lineup of comic actors Arshad Warsi,...

'B.A. Pass': Stark, brutal saga of seduction and betrayal (Ians Hindi Film Review)
B.A. Pass (2012)
Film: B.A. Pass; Starring: Shilpa Shukla, Shadab Kamal; Directed by Ajay Bahl; Rating: ****

Somewhere towards the end of the protagonist Mukesh's descent into a self-created hell, we see him standing shamelessly at the roadside soliciting sex, being picked up by three drunken burly men.

A little later, Shadab Kamal sobs in the bathroom, blood dripping to his feet in a trail of tell-tale brutality.

The intense implicit violence that underlines this sequence reminded me of a similar process of sexual debasement undertaken by Mark Wahlberg in Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights".

That was a film about the porn industry in the 1970s.
