Madrid-born horror meister Adrián García Bogliano, behind “La Exorcista,” one of 2022’s highest-grossing films in Mexico, has unveiled a teaser and first still of his new thriller “Someone’s at the Door,” which had a special presentation at Cannes’ genre business hub Fantastic Pavilion last May.

Produced by Carlos Meléndez’s Mr.Blue as well as executive producer Andrea Quiroz’s Salto de Fe Films, “Someone’s at the Door” features newcomer Alexis Cárdenas, Samantha Coronel (“Medea”) and “This Is Not Berlin” actor Mauro Sánchez Navarro.

García Bogliano’s love triangle drama follows the unexpected reunion between former high school classmates Alicia and Marianela, whose initially warm meeting takes a sinister turn. Alicia, portrayed by Cárdenas, becomes deeply suspicious of Marianela, played by Coronel, as she senses an affair between her husband (Sánchez) and her mentally perturbed friend.

Netflix and Redrum, producers of series “The Chosen One,” have issued statements on the Baja California road accident that killed two of their actors on Thursday. Two other cast members and four crew members were injured, but remain stable and have gone home to recover.

Said Netflix: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the lives of Ray Garduño and Juan Francisco González. Our thoughts are with their loved ones and with those injured during this unfortunate accident.”

Production has commenced in Mexico City and surrounding areas on Salto de Fe Films’ black comedy.

Adrián García Bogliano directs his follow-up to Here Comes The Devil about a bored accountant who kidnaps a teenage girl with no idea how difficult she will become.

Francisco Barreiro, Daniela Soto Vell and cult Cuban actor-director Jorge Molina star in Scherzo Diabolico.

Bogliano’s Salto de Fe Films produces with Us-based F and Mexico’s Mr Blue, rABYa Producciones, and Morbido Films.

Bogliano’s longtime partner Andrea Quiroz Hernández serves as producer alongside Carlos Melendez. Joshua Sobel is the executive producer.

Last year saw the release of Here Comes the Devil, a unique take on the demonic possession sub-genre from Director/Writer Adrián García Bogliano. Now Bogliano is back at work on his next film, a black comedy called Scherzo Diabolico that follows a kidnapped teenage girl who raises hell for her captor. Principal photography just began on Scherzo Diabolico and we have the first still.

El Mercado Fantastico is back. The international co-production market for genre films is putting out a wide alert to find projects made by Latino filmmakers currently in development, pre-production or post. Finalists will go to Austin during this year’s Fantastic Fest (September 18-25) and be hooked up with potential production partners, sales agents, and distributors. The market is co-produced with Canana and El Rey so you know the platform will attract heavyweight investors and partners.

Along with accepting classic genre staples like horror, action and fantasy, projects can run the genre gamut and include animation, westerns, dark comedies, sci-fi, basically anything other than your run of the mill drama. In its second year, the market will select 12-14 projects and new this year, will select four films in post to screen as works in progress.

Since 2005, Fantastic Fest has nailed its epic niche of being the ultimate festival for a ravenous movie geek audience who embraces the rigorously curated fantastic program. And the international film marketplace has taken note, snapping up rights to several film titles that have screened in the Fantastic Fest program. El Mercado Fantastico feels like a natural step for them to incubate their specialty and sustain their grip on all films fantastic.

Director of Programming Rodney Perkins, along with Festival Director Kristin Bell are and heavily scouting for submissions. They received around 100 submissions last year and Rodney told me that overall, the quality was very high. Out of the 16 participating projects, a majority were by directors and producers who have had previous films in the festival. Rodney says they are looking to mix it up with bringing new talent to the surface, but also choosing projects by filmmakers with proven track records in making good movies and the quality of their new projects.

Rodney commented, “Some of the most interesting genre directors in the world are based out of countries like Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Brazil and Uruguay. Fantastic Fest has featured numerous films from these and other countries. A lot of these talented people don’t get recognized globally, particularly in the U.S. We want to do what we can to help them make films and expose their work to a broader international audience.”

Like Rodney says, since its inception, Fantastic Fest has supported and premiered films from Spanish filmmakers like Nacho Vigalondo (Time Crimes, Open Windows), Eugenio Mira (Agnosia, Grand Piano), Chileans like Ernesto Diaz Espinosa (Kiltro, Mandrill), Nicolas Lopez (Santos, Aftershock) and Mexicans Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Here Comes The Devil), and Jorge Michel Grau (Somos Lo Que Hay), among other filmmakers from all over South America and the Caribbean.

A number of projects that were in pre-production when they participated in the inaugural market last September are already coming to fruition. Notably Isaac Ezban’s feature debut El Incidente, produced by Andrea Quiroz (Here Comes the Devil), is completed and will screen at Ventana Sur’s Blood Window showcase at Cannes Marche du Film. Edgar Nito’s project Tatewari is steadily advancing and recently announced a new associate producer. The team from Uruguayan project Small Town found the producing partners for their film, Dios Local from the market last year. Dios Local is almost complete and is represented for international sales by the French company Elle Driver.

So what are you waiting for? I know there has got to be more than 100 Latino made genre projects out there. They aren’t just looking for international Latinos but U.S. native Latinos to represent. At least one of the filmmakers/producers should be some kind of Latino. Get your application together to submit asap. I was on the documentary jury last year which awarded Best Documentary to Jodorowsky’s Dune and Best Director to Shaul Shwarz for (Now on Netflix and iTunes) so I know firsthand this festival is a vital film festival. Plus, there’s really nowhere else you’ll find such sanctioned festival shenanigans like Helicopter Hog Hunting, Filmmaker Shotgun outings, the Schlitz chuggin Award Ceremony rite, Nerd rap, Karaoke and Debates that are settled with a good ol boxing fight.

A winner at the recent Mercado Fantastico - the new project market attached to Austin's Fantastic Fest, designed to help projects find co-producers, investors, etc - Mexican director Isaac Ezban has launched production on his low budget science fiction project The Incident and has shared the first trio of images from the shoot with us. Produced by Here Comes The Devil and Cold Sweat producer Andrea Quiroz, the film tells the story of two groups of people trapped in illogical, endless spaces - a stairwell and a stretch of road - for thirty five years. 29 more days to go until Fantastic Fest 2011 takes over Austin Texas! I cannot wait. 17 more films were announced late last week. Only one of those 17 films was on our “Film Guestimation” list for Fantastic Fest 2011. They still have yet to announce Opening & Closing films along with other Gala screenings so hopefully we won’t look like total fools. All we need is maybe half of our films that we listed to show up. Anyway, beyond the break, you can check out what is playing.

Apparently, more films will be announced this week. We will try to get those out as soon as we hear about it.

100 Best Kills

One of the greatest long-running traditions of Fantastic Fest is the 100 Best Kills Party, where we sit in a theater together and turn the spotlight on the Grim Reaper of movieland as he disembowels, detonates and decapitates again and again and again.

Fresh off a successful opening salvo of films, Fantastic Fest is proud to announce the second wave of pictures for the week of September 22-29 in Austin, Texas. As always, it looks like an impressive line-up.

And seeing how this is the film festival that has launched such films as Zombieland, Trollhunter and The Human Centipede, you'll just have to trust them. They've proven time and again they know what's good.

In addition to the line-up of 17 new films making their world, North American or Us premieres, Fantastic Fest has some great contests and one hottie of a new director in Kristen Bell.

VOD must be quite a profitable avenue for Magnet, as they will debut Lars von Trier‘s highly-anticipated Cannes hit Melancholia on the digital platform over a month before its theatrical release in November. Vulture has the official Us poster premiere (using the same key art as the rest) as well as the news of an October 7th, 2011 VOD release date for the drama starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard and Udo Kier.

It will then debut in theaters on November 11th, but it has also just been announced as part of the Fantastic Fest line-up. Check out their second wave of titles after the poster for the fest that runs from September 22nd to the 29th.

Fantastic Fest is an annual film festival in Austin, Texas, founded in 2005 by Tim League of Alamo Drafthouse, Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News, Paul Alvarado-Dykstra, and Tim McCanlies, writer of The Iron Giant and Secondhand Lions. The festival which focuses on genre films such as horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, Asian, and cult takes place in September at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, filling three screens for eight days and hosting many writers, directors and actors, both well established and unknown. Mpi Media Group announced it has acquired all North American rights to Cold Sweat, a new horror film featuring a pair of villains who raise the bar in cinematic evil. A sensation at the South By Southwest film festival, the film, directed by Adrián García Bogliano, will receive a theatrical release in fall 2011, to be followed by DVD and Video on Demand availability.

Cold Sweat (Sudor Frío) is a co-production of Pampa Films, a leading studio in Argentina, and indie house Paura Flics. Pampa’s previous productions include the local box-office hits The Signal and The Legend.
