Three crew members who worked on Rust have settled a lawsuit over the accidental shooting of the cinematographer on the film’s set.
In a joint document filed last week, both sides notified the court of a deal to resolve the case. Terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed.
The lawsuit stems from an incident on Oct. 21, 2021, when an old-fashioned revolver Alec Baldwin was handling went off. Assistant director David Halls handed him the gun and said that it was “cold,” meaning that it didn’t contain live ammunition. But the revolver discharged in the direction of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was killed, and director Joel Souza, who was injured, while the actor was practicing a drawing maneuver.
In 2023, dolly operator Ross Addiego, set costumer Doran Curtin and key grip Reese Price sued Baldwin and the production companies behind Rust. They pointed to a disastrous safety culture on the set...

Parole Granted For ‘Rust’ Armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Must Stay Away From Halyna Hutchins’ Family
The one person who actually went to prison for the 2021 shooting death of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins is free just weeks after the tragedy suffused Alec Baldwin starring indie Western premiered and then promptly disappeared in a cloud of box office dust earlier this month.
According to the New Mexico Department of Corrections, the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was granted parole earlier this week and released on May 23. Having served the state statute required 85% of her 18-month sentence and received extra marks for good behavior and the completion of a drug rehab program, records show Gutierrez-Reed having signed out of the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility on Friday morning. She quickly headed to her home in Bullhead City, Arizona where she will serve out her parole.
A very situation specific part of that parole is that Gutierrez-Reed cannot have contact with Hutchins’ widower, child or any other member of the filmmaker’s family.

A movie armorer convicted in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin on the set of the Western movie Rust was released from a New Mexico prison on Friday after completing an 18-month sentence.
Prison records show Hannah Gutierrez-Reed signed out of the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants to return home to Bullhead City, Arizona, on parole related to her involuntary manslaughter conviction in the death of Halyna Hutchins in 2021.
Gutierrez-Reed also is being supervised under terms of probation after pleading guilty to a separate charge of unlawfully carrying a gun into a licensed liquor establishment.
Baldwin, the lead actor and coproducer for Rust, was pointing a gun at Hutchins during a rehearsal on a movie set outside Santa Fe when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the film armorer convicted of manslaughter in the “Rust” shooting, was released on parole Friday after serving 14 months in prison.
Gutierrez Reed, 28, served her sentence at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility. She was released Friday morning and ordered to go to Bullhead City, Ariz., where she lives. Her attorney, Jason Bowles, declined to comment on the release out of respect for her privacy.
Gutierrez Reed was found to have acted with criminal negligence when she loaded a live bullet into Alec Baldwin’s gun on the Western set near Santa Fe, N.M., in October 2021. Baldwin was holding the gun when it fired, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.
Baldwin — who denied pulling the trigger — was also put on trial for involuntary manslaughter last July, but the case was dismissed after the judge learned that prosecutors had withheld evidence from the defense. The...

In the opening moments of Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, we hear Halyna Hutchins’s voice calling, “That looks great,” just before the sun dips below the New Mexico horizon. It’s a haunting invitation into Rachel Mason’s deeply personal documentary, which stitches together Halyna’s final day on the Rust set with the wider story of how an indie Western shoot became the scene of a fatal accident.
Mason pays tribute to Hutchins’s vibrant creativity—her flair for wide, dynamic compositions and her passion for storytelling—while tracing the events of October 21, 2021, when a prop gun discharged live ammunition. Key figures step forward: Hutchins herself, viewed through personal footage; Alec Baldwin, whose role as actor and producer looms large; Joel Souza, the director who survived the same shot; and Mason, whose friendship with Halyna anchors the film’s heart.

There are some projects that simply can't be separated from the tragedy surrounding them. Whether it's a legal battle, a feud, or even a death, the project is forever tied to its controversy.
One of those cases is Alec Baldwin's latest release, the controversial Western Rust. The movie had been long in development, as it started filming in October 2021, but everything was halted when Baldwin accidentally fired a live round from a prop gun on the set, injuring the director and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The film's journey to the theater was long, and after an unimpressive reception from the critics, Rust received more encouraging reactions from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Rust officially premiered in theaters on May 2 and debuted with a low score of 56% from the critics on the review-aggregator website. That automatically led to a "rotten" badge. As more reviews came in,Rust's score further dropped...

The history surrounding the movie Rust has put a stain on it after more than three years since an incident on set ended with a filmmaker tragically losing their life. The film first made news in 2021 after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed following the accidental discharge of a prop gun that the film's star, Alec Baldwin, believed was loaded with blank rounds. In the years since the tragic accident, Rust has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons, and that continues with the movie's arrival in cinemas. Rust was finally released over the weekend, but the film's box office haul indicates that many people chose not to show up.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rust grossed a mere $25,000 during its opening weekend while showing in 115 theaters. The film ranked 27th on the box office chart, behind the documentary Secret Mall Apartment, which managed to gross $29,750 on just 39 screens. In Rust's defense,...

More than three years after the on-set incident that put the movie on the world's radar, Alec Baldwin's "Rust" has arrived. In late 2021, during the initial phase of production, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that he thought only had blank rounds in it. It's a tragedy that has reshaped the conversation about on-set safety regarding firearms. But in part because Hutchins' family is benefiting from the proceeds generated by the movie, it has officially been released both in theaters and on digital marketplaces.

Alec Baldwin's Controversial Film Gets More Bad News at Box Office After Leaving Critics Unimpressed
This weekend’s box office saw Thunderbolts*easily take the No. 1 spot with $76 million from 4,330 theaters. However, it was another story for Rust, the problematic film from actor and writer Alec Baldwin. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Rust, directed and co-written by Joel Souza, took in $25,000 in its debut weekend in limited release. The film had a budget of around $8 million.
The $25,000 total comes from just 115 theaters after the movie was finally released four years after its star, Baldwin, accidentally discharged a weapon on set that killed the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and wounded Souza. Baldwin thought the weapon contained only blanks, but the chamber contained a live round of ammunition.
The Lawsuit was Ultimately Settled
A lawsuit followed the events, with Hutchins’ family settling and all charges being dropped against Baldwin. Baldwin paid a settlement to the cinematographer’s family, and Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, was made an executive producer on the film.

Four years after the on-set death of its cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the independent western “Rust” received a limited theatrical release this weekend alongside a home release on video on-demand. But the film has gone largely ignored, grossing just $25,000 from 115 theaters.
“Rust” stars Baldwin as Harland Rust, a wanted outlaw who comes out of hiding to rescue his estranged grandson, who is sentenced to death for accidentally killing a rancher. Twenty-six reviews have been logged for the film on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 42% score.

A group of misfits and outsiders are making headlines at the box office after winning over audiences and critics in a major way.
Marvel and Disney’s Thunderbolts* soared to the top of the domestic chart with an estimated domestic opening of $76 million from 4,330 theaters, slightly ahead of expectations for a superhero pic that features lesser-known characters. While Marvel and Disney would no doubt have liked north of $80 million, the biggest factor will be how the $180 million movie legs out.
Overseas, the star-studded ensemble pic led by Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan pulled in $86.1 million for a global start of $162.1 million; again, in line with expectations. The global Imax haul was a huge $20 million.
It drew impressive audience sentiment across the board, including boasting a glowing 95 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the third-highest score for a title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a tie with Spider-Man: Far From Home...

After Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed were criminally charged due to their involvement with the Rust shooting, the movie is now available to general audiences. The Western, which stars Baldwin as outlaw Harland Rust, was originally intended to be a small-scale production with a budget of under $10 million. Tragically, a devastating accident led to cinematographer Haylna Hutchins' death, after Baldwin's prop gun proved to hold live ammunition. Three years after the incident, the movie was officially released on May 2, despite initial speculation that it would never be finished.

Relatives of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer tragically killed on the Santa Fe set of Western Rust, have come out in support of the film, encouraging movie lovers to see it.
Olga Solovey, the Dp’s mother, said, “I watched my daughter’s stunning film twice. I was so happy for the success of my daughter because it was filmed so beautifully. I would want everybody to watch it because it was the dream of my daughter and she would want people to see it.”
Solovey continued, “I would want people to see the talent, the beauty, the success, and I’m just so immensely proud of [Halyna]. She had a very specific style of cinematography and she saw the world differently. She could see and capture how the sun sets and how animals behaved. She saw the beauty of it all. She could capture it. She could capture nature. I like the film.

Four years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin’s Western is finally releasing in theaters. Despite, or perhaps because of, the controversy surrounding it, this film will likely go under most people’s radar. It’s a surprisingly heartfelt Western about the bond between a young vagrant and an aging cowboy, beautifully shot and nicely paced. Still, it’s difficult to watch without the weight of its history looming over it.

Rusthas become one of the most talked-about films in years due to the tragic events surrounding its filming. Four years after an accidental shooting left the film's cinematographer Halyna Hutchinsdead and director Joel Souza injured, the Western has finally been released courtesy of distributor Falling Forward Films. But viewers appear to be unmoved, as Rust's Rotten Tomatoes score is largely underwhelming.
At the time of this article's publication, Rust is sitting at a "rotten" critic's score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews. However, it should also be noted that the film currently has no audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so there is a chance that audiences could end up liking it far more than the critics, as is the case with many films. Rust director Joel Souza has shared his opinion of the TLC reality show The Baldwins, in which Alec Baldwin finds himself facing the cameras after the Rust shooting incident dramatically changed his life. Souza is not exactly friends with Baldwin today, and when asked if he saw The Baldwins when it premiered, the director candidly replied: "I think I was busy hitting myself in the face with a frying pan that night."
Souzais not enjoying the release of his latest film. Rust, the western thriller starring Baldwin, has finally seen the light of day, but the incident that took place during its production is still hard to process for most. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot in 2021 during a rehearsal in which Baldwin manipulated a pistol that contained a live round. After a dense judicial process, people were sent to jail, others had their charges dismissed, and production eventually resumed.

Alec Baldwin's latest film, Rust, has just hit theaters. However, the film had been long in the making following the fatal shooting accident on set and the controversial release.
Rust has officially released in theaters on May 2, and it's already not a favorite. The Western, which was written and directed by Joel Souza, stars Baldwin in the leading role, besides his role as co-writer and producer. As Rust hit theaters, the movie debuted with an unfortunate score of 56% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes the movie considered "rotten." After this debut score, the number has begun to sink lower.
Rust had its world premiere last year on Nov. 20, 2024, at the Camerimage Festival in Poland, but to smaller audiences. Baldwin also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for playing a casino manager in the 2003 film, The Cooler.

It's no secret that Rust is one of the most controversial projects to get completed in recent memory due to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. However, despite that fact, critics have weighed in on the final product, and it seems to be a heavily divisive entry in the Western genre. It's hard to separate the behind-the-scenes tragedy from what is on-screen, but thankfully, it seems Hutchins' work is getting the bulk of the praise despite mixed reviews.
As of this writing, Rust debuted with a 50% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes based on 20 reviews, which gives it a rotten label. Some critics were quick to point out the film's "bare-bones" plot, while others were impressed by the film's grim visual aesthetic. Meanwhile, MovieWeb's own review by Julian Roman praised Rust as...

There is an alt-timeline in which Rust, writer-director Joel Souza’s pulpy and pathos-fueled Western, is just another tale of an outlaw in his autumn years. It’s simply the latest entry in a genre whose century-plus history is filled with similarly modest sagebrush epics. After a brief theatrical run, a slightly longer tenure on VOD and a lifetime of cable re-runs every Father’s Day, this frontier opus would trot off into the sunset as a footnote in Alec Baldwin’s post-30 Rock, pre-reality TV show career. Reviews are in for Rust, the long-delayed Western starring Alec Baldwin. While critics praise the film's striking cinematography by the late Halyna Hutchins, they agree the film is defined by the tragic incident that occurred during its production in 2021, when Baldwin discharged a revolver he believed was loaded with blanks. Instead, a live round was fired, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.
"Halyna Hutchins’ dusk-and-sunset cinematography, abetted by the work of Bianca Cline, may be the best thing about Rust; the film has a moody sensuality to it," says Variety's Owen Gleiberman. "It's a handsome and watchable indie art Western, set in 1882, that turns into a sentimental cross-generational buddy film. Yet I can’t say that the movie, in the end, is especially good."
Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter also notes the cinematography: "Rust feels more accomplished in other areas, like the cinematography and the coordination of the fight scenes.

After several years and enormous tragedy, the ill-fated Rust will finally be released on Friday.
And the Western’s writer-director, Joel Souza, has complicated thoughts on his creation — given the death of the movie’s cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was accidentally shot in 2021 by the film’s star, Alec Baldwin. After much debate, Souza and the cast and crew returned to finish the film.
“[Hutchins’ family] wanted it completed,” Souza told The Guardian. “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but [then] it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.”
That said, Souza quite naturally wishes he could go back in time and have never made the film. “Talk about the butterfly effect — I wish I never wrote the damn movie,” he said. “You think about the chain of events that started that morning [of the shooting]. Bad decision after bad decision was made.

That said, Souza quite naturally wishes he could go back in time and have never made the film. “Talk about the butterfly effect — I wish I never wrote the damn movie,” he said. “You think about the chain of events that started that morning [of the shooting]. Bad decision after bad decision was made.

In the dusty expanse of Wyoming Territory, 1882, life meant balancing scarcity and steel (and occasionally a misplaced bullet). Rust arrives as an indie art–Western that tiptoes between a grim morality tale and an unlikely buddy film—think True Grit with a generational twist.
Lucas Hollister, a 13-year-old orphan, accidentally kills a rancher while defending his little brother. The frontier court’s answer is swift: the gallows. Enter Harland Rust, a laconic gunslinger with more past sins than sermons, who busts his grandson out of jail and leads him toward the Mexican border.
That setup carries the weight of classical tragedy and a wry nod to our fascination with outlaw folklore.
Behind the camera, the film bears a solemn dedication to Halyna Hutchins, whose final frames linger like a silent elegy. Her dusk-and-sunset compositions haunt every scene, reminding us that art and loss often ride in tandem.

More than three years after an on-set shooting killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza, Rust is opening to the public. The film will be available through a limited theatrical release beginning May 2 and for digital purchase on platforms including Apple TV and Prime Video starting May 1.
Souza, who co-wrote the script and directed the film, has spoken about the decision to complete the project following the incident. “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. “But now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.”
The October 2021 shooting occurred when Alec Baldwin discharged a prop revolver that was believed to be safe. A live round was in the chamber, resulting in Hutchins’ death and Souza’s injury. Production was suspended, and the film’s future was uncertain until Hutchins’ family encouraged its completion.

Rust is certainly one independently made movie that doesn’t need publicity.
The Western starring Alec Baldwin, who also came up with the story and serves as a producer, was hit by tragedy during production in October 2021 when Baldwin’s prop gun discharged during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also injuring director-screenwriter Joel Souza. Production on the film halted immediately and finally resumed in April 2023. Legal cases involving Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, both charged with manslaughter, ended with Baldwin’s case being dismissed and Gutierrez-Reed found guilty.
The events of this tragedy made headlines around the globe and certainly raised doubts that the film itself would be finished, let alone see the light of day. In the end it was decided that to honor Hutchins’ final work the film would be completed, no profits would be shared by the original producers, and Hutchins’ widower Matthew Hutchins would...

“Rust,” as the whole world knows, is a movie that was the seat of a horrific on-set tragedy. During the shooting of a scene at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Alec Baldwin, who is the film’s star and one of its producers, discharged a gun that was being used as a prop and that somehow contained live rounds. The weapon went off, killing the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and injuring the director, Joel Souza.
Now that “Rust” has been completed and is finally being released, this terrible event regrettably but inevitably places “Rust” on that small but dicey roster of films that become famous because someone got violently killed in the process of making them. Is it part of the tainted karma of this category that the films themselves end up struggling to justify their existence? Vic Morrow was beheaded by a helicopter blade...

It’s nearly impossible to critique a film like Joel Souza’s western “Rust” because, in many respects, the film itself feels irrelevant. No matter how “Rust” turned out the inescapable truth is that on October 21, 2021 a tragedy occurred on set, ending the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The film’s star, Alec Baldwin, was rehearsing a shot, brandishing a gun in front of the camera. It fired. It should not have. Regardless of who is to blame — which is a very important question, but not one I’m qualified to answer — Hutchins died from her wounds. The film was put on hold, then finally resumed production, and now… here we are.
Is it a good movie? That depends on your definition of “good,” I suppose. It’s hard to celebrate any production where such an unthinkable, avoidable event took place. And it’s nearly impossible to stop thinking about...

In another timeline, Joel Souza’s Rust would come and go with mild fanfare and maybe some critical praise. The film follows a 13 year-old boy (Patrick Scott McDermott) who runs from the law — he’s been sentenced to death after accidentally shooting a local rancher — with his estranged grandfather (Alec Baldwin). It’s a no-frills Western, a classic story of cowboys and outlaws that revels in gorgeous scenery and the Puritanical moral dilemmas foundational to much of this nation’s mythology.
But Rust is a more fraught cultural product. Four years ago, Baldwin, who co-wrote as well as produced the film, accidentally discharged a weapon he thought only had blanks. A live round was in the chamber, and the bullet fatally wounded cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and also hit Souza. What followed was a dramatic, closely reported story that revealed on-set negligence and raised questions about industry practices around gun safety.

“Rust” director Joel Souza says he couldn’t have imagined anyone else completing the Western movie after the on-set accident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when Alec Baldwin’s gun accidentally discharged, also injuring Souza. Three and a half years later, the movie is finally opening in theaters Friday.
Souza told the Guardian that when he first considered finishing the film, “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.” But Hutchins’ family wanted to honor her by having the film with her final work completed, so he agreed to complete the Western.
It wasn’t easy returning to the set, Souza said: “I was a mess going in and a mess coming out. The crew carried me through. My family carried me through. Emotionally, I was all over the map.

He was hit by the same bullet that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The film-maker talks about his hopes for his western, his complicated feelings towards star Alec Baldwin – and why the industry hasn’t learned
Joel Souza never liked guns. “I didn’t grow up around them and I don’t like the culture,” says the grey-haired 51-year-old film-maker sitting at a desk at his home in Pleasanton, California. “Guns make me recoil. The idea of touching one, picking one up, I find very off-putting.”
In October 2021 he was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on the set of his sixth feature, the western Rust, when a gun being held by the film’s star, Alec Baldwin, was discharged accidentally during rehearsals. The weapon should have been loaded with blanks but a live round had found its way into the chamber. The movie’s Ukrainian cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded.

Rust, the long-delayed Western film starring Alec Baldwin, is finally set for release after years of uncertainty caused by a tragic on-set accident. Many believed the project would either be permanently shelved or become lost media. The fatal incident occurred on October 21, 2021, during a rehearsal when Baldwin discharged a firearm containing a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The tragedy led to widespread scrutiny of on-set firearm safety and raised concerns about how real weapons are handled in the film industry. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer responsible for handling firearms on set, was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter. A jury found that she displayed reckless disregard for safety, resulting in her sentencing of 18 months in prison—the maximum penalty for the charge. The accident was compared to the 1993 tragedy on the set of The Crow, where actor Brandon Lee was fatally shot due to mishandled prop ammunition.

On October 21, 2021, a fatal accident occurred on the set of Alec Baldwin's latest film, Rust. It's difficult to know how to feel about the potential release of Joel Souza's "Rust." This is the independently produced Western that became a major news story in 2021 when a .45 Colt revolver brandished by star Alec Baldwin -- who continues to claim he did not pull the trigger, hence the bizarre wording here -- fired a live round directly through the chest of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and into Souza's shoulder. The set's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was ultimately found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for her negligence in loading the weapon. Meanwhile, involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dismissed with prejudice by New Mexico Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer.
Principal photography on "Rust" was eventually completed in 2023. This delay caused cast members Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles to drop out of the movie, but Souza and company dragged the film across the finish line and screened it at the Camerimage film...

As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named Preacher (Travis Fimmel).”

Despite several years of interviews and investigations, the Rustshooting that caused the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins still feels like an unresolved case for many. Director Rachel Mason seeks to answer some of these questions in her brand-new documentary Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna, which is currently occupying the #1 spot on Hulu's streaming charts.
On Oct. 21, 2021, Hutchins was fatally shot on the set of Rust, a Western film starring Alec Baldwin. Baldwin had discharged a prop gun that was mistakenly loaded with live rounds instead of blanks, killing Hutchins and seriously injuring director Joel Souza. In the years since, both the court of public opinion and the New Mexican judicial system have battled ceaselessly to determine culpability, eventually charging Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed with involuntary manslaughter, and declaring Baldwin's innocence. But many people, including Hutchins' colleagues, were not satisfied by this outcome, feeling as though justice hadn't yet been served.

For the past four years, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins has been known to the public for the tragic end to her life. Director of the new Hulu documentary, “Last Take: ‘Rust and the Story of Halyna,” Rachel Mason wants to remind the world that she was an artist.
“What I hated to see was that she was seen as this sort of tragic victim because that’s the exact opposite of who she was,” Mason told TheWrap. “She was a very forthright person. She was motivated. She was absolutely not the kind of person that you would think of as a victim.”
The documentarian and performance artist sought to show a lesser-known side of the Dp whom she befriended a decade ago in, “Last Take: ‘Rust’ and the Story of Halyna,” which is now streaming on Hulu.

Rachel Mason’s Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna makes its point crystal clear from the title: Halyna Hutchins, the talented Dp who landed on American Cinematographer’s list of “10 up-and-coming directors of photography who are making their mark” in 2019, will not be upstaged by the celebrity who in 2021 accidentally shot and killed her (and injured director Joel Souza) during the filming of the western Rust. Which makes sense since Mason was a close friend of Hutchins, and was asked by her devastated widower to take on the project. And while the film is rightly a celebration […]
