Lille, France — The gauntlet thrown down by the opening stretches of Viaplay banner title “The Fortress,” one of nine series in main competition at Series Mania, is to believe that this is fiction.
News footage plays of a pandemic, then a war; huge protests rage around the world as Norway’s prime minister addresses his nation to announce that Norway is building a wall to keep everybody else out. That’s been done before (Israel) and in metaphorical terms (Brexit).
Cut to nine years later: Norway is a bucolic paradise, Sweden next door a refugee camp hell, until strange bacteria kills fish and then humans, and Norway will, foreseeably, need international help and “what starts as a wall, ends as a prison,” comments Filippa Wallestam, Viaplay Group chief content officer.
Set in an eerily familiar 2037 Bergen, and starring Selome Emnetu (“Occupied”) and Russell Tovey (“Years & Years”), “The Fortress” weighs...

Director Mikkel Brænne Sandemose brings Norwegian folk tale The Ash Lad to life with his upcoming live action feature adaptation, bringing audiences a classic tale of a poor young man pitted against overwhelming supernatural forces. Espen “Ash Lad”, a poor farmer’s son, embarks on a dangerous quest with his brothers to save the princess from a vile troll known as the Mountain King – in order to collect a reward and save his family’s farm from ruin. The Nordic countries have a strong history of high end, family oriented films and while the first teaser for this one avoids any direct shots of the villainous troll - we do see signs and consequences of his actions, however - the production value is obvious. Family oriented...

Projects participated in the Nordic festival’s works in progress event.
Ruben Ostlund got buyers and festival programmers hopping with excitement in Goteborg as he presented the first footage from his forthcoming fifth feature The Square during the festival’s work in progress pitches.
Ostlund screened about seven minutes from one scene of the new film, during which a controversial performance artist (played by Terry Notary) makes guests at a black-tie art gala very uncomfortable. “You know I love awkward situations,” the director said.
Goteborg’s audience of industry experts commented that they were impressed by the confidence of the unnerving scene, which showed Ostlund working on a bigger scale even than his last hit, Force Majeure.
At a festival session later for the public, Ostlund previewed a second clip from the film, in which a museum director (Claes Bang) delivers a self-centered video apology to a boy he had accused of being a thief.

Norwegian director Roar Uthaug is preparing Scandinavia’s first disaster movie, The Wave (Bølgen).
The film, budgeted at $7.9m (NOK50m), will depict a tsunami that is predicted to hit Norway at some point in the future.
There was a previous instance in 1934 when 2 million cubic metres of rock fell into Norway’s Tafiord, triggering a 85-metre wave, which left 40 people dead.
Currently, a 700-metre crevice in the Åkneset Fjell, aka the Fjell of Death, expands by 10-15cm annually. This will eventually result in a rockslide, creating a tsunami in the fjord and destroying everything in its path before it reaches land in Geiranger.
“I have been fascinated by this event since I first heard about it six or seven years ago,” said Norwegian producer Martin Sundland, of Fantefilm Fiksjon, which is making feature currently in post-production.
“It is scary that there is such a place in Norway where disaster will unavoidably happen again.”

Curse you, Indiana Jones! The bullwhip-toting, fedora-wearing, hard-loving professor created unrealistic expectations for all cinematic archaeologists who have followed in his footsteps. Thus, the gentle, mild, soft-spoken Sigurd, a tall and slender family man who is still coping with the loss of his wife, hardly seems the type to chase after a Viking myth about the end of the world, especially with his two children in tow on a supposed "family vacation" in the desolate, far north Finnmark region on the border between Norway and Russia. Yet watching the unlikely adventure hero Sigurd try to balance the competing interests of family and work -- to be more accurate, a personal obsession -- is one of the pleasures offered by Ragnarok, directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose,...

Can someone tell me why more filmmakers aren’t sifting through rich Nordic legends for creature feature ideas? André Øvredal struck gold with Trollhunter, and when analyzing the seafaring culture, so many untouched stories about vikings, monsters, and cinematically inviting dark fairytales still remain only on parchment. Why aren’t more people paying attention to Nordic cinema with movies like Trollhunter and, more recently, Ragnarok being produced? The latter isn’t necessarily the game-changer Trollhunter is, yet it’s still a wildly whimsical tale of terror and adventure, a bit of a thrilling exploration that feels fresh – even though normalcy becomes king. Director Mikkel Brænne Sandemose and writer John Kåre Raake meld family dynamics with a legendary predator for a truly unique viewing experience, but once the allure of a foreign lake-dwelling serpent wears off, typical monster movie generics are all that remain – but at least cinematic competencies are strong...

If the American summer blockbuster explosion of Transformers: Age of Extinction or any of the other big action movies that arrived this season aren't your thing, maybe you'll find something to like in the foreign action adventure Ragnarok. It's got some Steven Spielberg flair in it as it follows an archaeologist obsessed with an old Viking ship where they find clues that lead to "No Man's Land," a region between Norway and Russia where a giant beast lays hiding beneath the sea. You might recognize Pål Sverre Hagen from Kon-Tiki in the film, and this looks like some cool alternate programming this summer. We just hate the cheesy voiceover used to hide the fact that this isn't an English-language film. Watch below! Here's the Us trailer for Mikkel Brænne Sandemose's Ragnarok, originally from Apple: Ragnarok is a Norwegian film directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose and written by John Kåre Raake.

In 1904, Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and Swedish archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson excavated one of the greatest discoveries of the Viking Age -- a burial mound located on the Oseberg farm near Tornberg, Norway, containing a well-preserved ship, grave goods and the skeletal remains of two women. The quality and abundance of items within the grave indicate that at least one of the interred was a woman of high status, and it has been suggested that she was the legendary Norwegian Queen Asa.
Norwegian director Mikkel Brænne Sandemose couples this archaeological find with the Norse myth of the end of the world's events in his action/adventure Ragnarok, which premiered at Fantastic Fest. This family-friendly film pays homage to blockbusters such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies without the overdone Hollywood gloss. Somehow, I survived my six-movie day yesterday at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. My mind was amazed to have held firm throughout the day, but my body was basically operating on fumes if today was any indication. I stayed alert and awake through the four films I watched, but there were a couple of moments where I was thankful for the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline for offering an espresso chocolate milkshake. Anything to keep me buzzing. (Sorry for all the buzzing, Fantastic Fest friends. It’s the only way I can stay awake!) As you’ll see from the end of this post, this was my last day at the festival proper. Before I get into what I saw today, I just want to say exactly how much damn fun I’ve had these past few days. I met a lot of Twitter friends in person and, if I’m lucky,...

Curse you, Indiana Jones! The bullwhip-toting, fedora-wearing, hard-loving professor created unrealistic expectations for all cinematic archeologists who have followed in his footsteps. Yet watching the unlikely adventure hero Sigurd try to balance the competing interests of family and work -- to be more accurate, a personal obsession -- is one of the pleasures offered by Ragnarak, directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose,...

"Man knows little." As much as I was hoping this was an epic action-adventure on the scale of 13th Warrior or Beowulf or Outlander, it actually seems to be more of a family adventure similar to National Treasure. Nordisk Film and Mangolia Pictures have released the first subtitled trailer for Ragnarok, originally Gåten Ragnarok, starring Norwegian actor Pål Sverre Hagen, seen in last year's Oscar nominated film Kon-Tiki. This is actually more of a teaser with gorgeous sweeping shots of a family on some adventure raiding Viking graves and hugging each other, but beyond that, I'm not sure what they're going to encounter. Take a look! Here's the full (English subtitled) trailer for Mikkel Brænne Sandemose's Ragnarok, found on YouTube: When the archaeologist Sigurd can't settle on the myth about Ragnarok, the end of the world in Northern mythology, he decides to go on an expedition together with two colleges and his two kids.

Thor aside, the lack of Norse mythology on the big screen is something of a mystery. It's a rich tradition, filled with charismatic characters and larger than life adventure. It's prime material for cinema, basically, and yet very little of it has ever been used as the basis for films. But that may change soon.Scheduled for an August 2013 release, Mikkel Brænne Sandemose's The Gate Of Ragnarok (Gåten Ragnarokk) promises a Goonies style kid oriented adventure film steeped in the traditions of the Norse gods.At the outset of the film, we are transferred back to the year 833 A.D., where we meet a group of Vikings in the process of leaving their village. Fritt Vilt 3 Alt' PosterOkay, this is ridiculous; the excellent Fritt Vilt serial killer series is in to its second sequel and yet this latest film has not been picked up for Us distribution. A bold distributor like Maverick Entertainment, First Look Studios, or Camelot Entertainment Group need to take as much notice of this brutal series, just as fans have. In the meantime, more promotional material is materializing on this original, exceptional and gripping horror series.
The third trailer is available for Fritt Vilt 3 (Cold Prey 3) here, along with the fourth alternate poster. Several additional characters are shown in both pieces and while the clip is in Norwegian, much of the story can be seen in the acting and interacting. Enjoy the latest on Fritt Vilt 3, until picked up and brought to North America where it belongs!

When Roar Uthaug's Cold Prey (Fritt Vilt) hit Norwegian cinema screens in 2006 it came as something as a risk. As the first true slasher film to emerge from the area nobody knew how audiences would respond to its story of a group of college kids being hunted by a mysterious killer in a remote, abandoned hotel. Luckily for them the film became a huge hit and, in retrospect, now stands as the trigger event for the current wave of Nordic genre film.
Cold Prey quickly spawned a sequel that followed directly on the events of the first picture and later this year - in mid October - a third entry in the series will arrive on Norwegian screens. This latest effort is a prequel picture, the story of what created the killer in the first place.

Via the film’s official site, here’s the first teaser trailer for the Norwegian slasher sequel “Cold Prey 3″ (also known as “Cold Prey Beginning”). Having never seen the first two in the franchise, I couldn’t tell you if the footage in the teaser are from the first two movies, or if they’re new footage from the third one. It looks like a pretty standard slasher movie to me, but that shouldn’t stop you from reading James Mudge’s review of “Cold Prey 2″ anyway to get an idea of what the series is all about. Directed by Mikkel Brænne Sandemose and starring Nils Johnson, the film has five friends heading into the snowy mountains for a little snowboarding, where they take shelter in an isolated, empty cabin. Obviously the cabin isn’t empty, or else this would be a pretty boring sequel. “Cold Prey 3″ is due out...
