Head Count review – Burghart brothers’ tricksy crime drama has certain flair
Aaron Jakubenko
With tough guys pointing his own gun at his head, Aaron Jakubenko’s arithmetically minded Kat counts back how many times it has gone off to work out if there are any bullets left

This suspenseful comedy-drama gets a little tricksy, with flashbacks within flashbacks and sudden shifts of tone. But the lead actor Aaron Jakubenko has plenty of charisma – enough to pull the viewer along for the rocky ride mapped out by the writing-directing sibling team, Ben and Jacob Burghart. The Burghart brothers originally made a short version of the set up here, also called Head Count, which might explain the film’s bitty quality, but as aspiring film-makers they have a certain flair.

As the film opens, Jakubenko’s protagonist Kat finds himself in the hands of some ominous-looking tough guys who are holding Kat’s own revolver to his head. An arithmetically minded fellow (we later see...

‘Head Count’ Video Review
Image
Head Count, an action-packed thrill ride starring Aaron Jakubenko, Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Melanie Zanetti (Bluey) and directed by Ben Burghart and Jacob Burghart, will be released on digital platforms 19th February courtesy of Blue Finch Film Releasing.

A gun is pointed to Kat’s head. It’s his gun. Or at least it was after he escaped a chain gang and stole it. Luckily for him though, it’s not fully loaded. But how many bullets are left? He can’t quite remember. And now, with an unknown assailant pulling the trigger, Kat is forced to recall exactly what happened to each bullet. While the empty rounds click away, memories of wild animal attacks, run-ins with an impulsive police officer, a down-to-earth arms dealer, and his ex-lover come flooding back. As the pressure mounts, Kat must figure out how many rounds are left and try to devise a plan to escape…...

Head Count Review | It's Blood Simple Meets Memento in Impressive New Thriller
Image
After being knocked out by a mysterious thug, Kat comes to and finds a gun pointed to his head. It’s his gun. But is there a bullet left? Why not pull the trigger and see what happens? Suddenly, Kat is forced to recall what happened to every bullet in the gun, hoping that none are left.

That premise fuels the new neo-Western ride Head Count from the Burghart brothers, Ben and Jacob. The sibling filmmaking duo go by way of the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, reportedly one of their biggest inspirations, to deliver an enjoyable if not jam-packed outing that they’ve described as “Memento meets Blood Simple.” Or vice versa. Because there’s a lot of groovy thematic interchanges and flashbacks offered here in a tale about an escaped convict on the run.

Aaron Jakubenko (Tidelands) headlines the film alongside Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Melanie Zanetti...

Head Count Filmmakers Jacob and Ben Burghart on Their Neo-Western Thrill Ride
Image
Head Count, the new neo-Western thriller from Shout! Studios, is Blood Simple meets Memento. Directed with vigor by brothers Jacob Burghart and Ben Burghart, the film finds an escaped convict confronted with a set of improbable scenarios and several lurid characters in manic journey filled with violence, redemption, and even love.

The film stars Aaron Jakubenko (Tidelands), Melanie Zanetti (Bluey), and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood). The concept for this festive ride sprang from a 48-hour film festival the Burghart brothers entered that found them having to whip a movie idea then shoot, edit it, and create a film. “One of the concepts we had for that was this movie,” said Ben Burghart. “It was a guy trying to remember how many bullets are left in his gun and each bullet is a memory. And we've been trying to get this other horror film off the ground for a few years and eventually we were like,...

Great White – Review
Image
Reviewed by Marc Butterfield

Great White is an aptly, if not particularly creatively named movie. It is merely one in a long line of movies that vilify the species of shark, and not even especially a good vilification. It starts out with promise, a young honeymooning couple enjoying a dip in a peaceful lagoon, only to become the first people eaten by the titular beastie. This is the highest quality the movie will achieve however, as from here on out there is clunky dialogue, strange character building, and the one thing that kills a movie faster than a speeding shark, the requisite stupid, predictable mistakes it takes to put otherwise apparently intelligent people in to dumb, dangerous, and almost always fatal positions. There are unexplored plot threads, unlikeable characters, and unnecessary things that serve no purpose other than to drag the viewer in to a “this character is flawed” or...

Q&a: Director Martin Wilson Discusses Filming the New Shark Movie Great White
Image
Survivors of a plane crash find themselves in shark-infested waters in the new movie Great White, and with the aquatic thriller now in theaters, On Demand, and Digital HD, we caught up with director Martin Wilson in a new Q&a feature to discuss working with his talented cast, filming on and under the water, and bringing the film’s sharks to life.

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Martin, and congratulations on Great White! What was it about Michael Boughen’s screenplay for this film that made you want to bring this story to life on screen?

Martin Wilson: I felt the script by Michael Boughen had a strong visual scope to use the locations evocatively as a dynamic and dangerous place. The setting itself was a really important character in the film for me. I wanted to showcase the northern tropical waters of Australia as vast,...

‘Great White’ Review: Shark Survival Saga Treads Familiar Waters
Image
One has to imagine that conceptualizing a shark attack scene must be relatively easy. There’s a reason that these animals have become such evergreen villains in nature thrillers, and the basic cinematic architecture of an attack scene hasn’t changed all that much since “Jaws.” But the scariest part of a shark attack is the element of surprise, and for that to work, a shark film faces its toughest challenge: thinking of something for its potential chum to do in the moments when a shark is not attacking them.

This is a challenge that is poorly met by Martin Wilson’s “Great White,” a paint-by-numbers shark survival slog which strands five people on an inflatable life raft besieged by a hungry fish. Though boasting a few adequate action sequences, and foregoing the more gonzo schlockiness of peer projects like “The Meg” and “Shark Night,” the film’s human characters make for drab company,...

Great White Review: A Change of Pace for the Shark Thriller
There’s a legend of sorts about a shipwreck on the island locale most tourists ask Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) and Kaz (Katrina Bowden) to take them off the Australian coast. Only one man survived the ordeal and natives, like the Captain’s cook (Te Kohe Tuhaka’s Benny), have never forgotten his name. It thus means something when the trio’s latest fares (Kimie Tsukakoshi’s Michelle and Tim Kano’s Joji) take out an urn of ashes and a photograph of that very same man. He was her grandfather and always said he wanted his final resting place to be with the men who didn’t make it. Just as his journey back then proved deadly, however, Michelle’s is about to get arduous, too, after stumbling upon a legless cadaver washed ashore.

Director Martin Wilson and screenwriter Michael Boughen’s shark thriller Great White presents its characters with...

Review: Great White is a Guppy within its Subgenre
Image
Of the creature feature subgenre, shark movies represent a unique sect capable of encompassing a range that spans from Jaws to Sharknado. Shark films can be truly exceptional pieces of film and they can be so off-the-wall and ridiculous that they achieve a whole other form of greatness. From the frightening to the ludicrous, shark movies are easy to love and offer a simple blueprint for filmmakers to follow. Which is why it’s almost impressive how much Great White manages to miss the mark.

Great White is the feature directorial debut of Martin Wilson with screenwriter Michael Bougen. The film stars Katrina Bowden, Aaron Jakubenko, Kimie Tsukakoshi, Tim Kano, and Te Kohe Tuhaka (Love and Monsters).

In Great White, a tourist escape to an island paradise turns deadly when a seaplane carrying five passengers goes down near the site of a shipwreck. An aggressive great white shark attacks the...

Great White Trailer Turns a Blissful Trip Into Shark Attack Summer
Image
We have a brand new trailer for Great White. Hailing from the folks at Rlje Films and Shudder, this is bringing the shark movie action to the big screen this summer. Dating back to Steven Spielberg's Jaws, shark movies have been a staple of the summer moviegoing season for years. Now, we have a new entry to the subgenre from first-time feature director Martin Wilson, with Katrina Bowden starring. By the looks of it, they've crafted a tense, isolated survival thriller set in the middle of the ocean with sharks aplenty.

A Great White poster previewing the shark action to come had previously been released. But this trailer gives us a far better idea of what to expect from the movie. The trailer doesn't waste much time in getting to the point, as we open with a shot of someone being ripped under the water, presumably by a hungry shark,...

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Great White (2021) review: Shark thriller is nothing new but has some bite
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Since Steven Spielberg formed the summer blockbuster and scared the bejesus out of crowds with Jaws back in 1975, it is fair to say that shark cinema has exponentially grown in number. Some offerings sinking into the murky depths of ineptitude but others have struck with such razor-toothed ferocity that they have found themselves ranked highly in this crowded finned sub-genre of nature attacks filmmaking. In fact, of late, there have been some very impressive offerings like Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Shallows, Johannes Roberts’ 47 Meters Down, and the underrated Deep Blue Sea 3 and found footage spin Cage Dive. Sadly Martin Wilson’s Great White does not quite raise to those higher tides but still has some thrashing thrills on offer.

The story sees struggling sea plane guides Kaz (Katrina Bowden) and Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) and their friend Benny (Te Kohe Tuhaka) get a much needed job taking two clients...

Stars: Katrina Bowden, Aaron Jakubenko, Kimie Tsukakoshi, Tim Kano, Te Kohe Tuhaka | Written by Michael Boughen | Directed by Martin Wilson

Who doesn’t love a good shark movie? Hell, who doesn’t love a bad shark movie?! There’s certainly a wide variety of shark movies available these days (and I think we’ve reviewed most of them here on Nerdly too), from ridiculous films like Ouija Shark, Ghost Shark and Virus Shark, to The Asylum’s Sharknado franchise and more mainstream fare such as 47 Metres Down, The Shallows and The Reef.

And it’s with the latter film that Great White feels most in common. Both films come from Australian filmmakers, both films feature a small group of people stranded at the beck and call of great whites… But then aren’t all shark film usually about a small group of people trapped by sharks?

In the case...

Great White Review
Image
It doesn’t bode well for the success of your shark thriller when the audience wills the sharks to win. But such is the case with Great White, Martin Wilson’s generic, chomp by numbers schlock with its above-average cinematography, tedious characters and baddies that you’ll genuinely root for just to make it stop.

Kaz (Katrina Bowden) needs things to change for the better. In nine months her life is going to be very different but the laissez-faire attitude of her former marine biologist boyfriend – and budget McConaughey – Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) doesn’t exactly scream secure future, their seaplane rarely climbs above the dock and the phone is ringing off the hook with calls from the bank.

How fortunate then that a last-minute charter for wealthy newlyweds should fall into their laps. Michelle (Kimie Tsukakoshi) and Joji (Tim Kano) are clearly wrestling tensions of their own; he is possessive...

Great White review – hangry shark thriller gets stuck in the shallows
Aaron Jakubenko
A killer shark movie shoehorns climate change in to a very familiar narrative, though the CGI beast is impressive

This Australian survival thriller gives us another global warming threat to worry about – hangry sharks. When a great white the size of a 4X4 starts chomping through holidaymakers, marine biologist Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) is perplexed. Shark season is over – what’s it doing hanging about in Aussie waters? Might it have something to do with rising ocean temperatures, he wonders, or the shrinking fish population? Or maybe it’s the way that director Martin Wilson films human legs dangling so temptingly in the water?

This is a killer shark movie with a semi-decent CGI great white, a predictable survival storyline, and all the familiar trappings: the pointed fin gliding menacingly towards dinner, the sea turning red, that creaky lurching sound of a boat bobbing on the ocean, signalling the calm before the attack.

Crunching the numbers on streaming services’ local content: static growth, but more original productions
‘Lunatics’. (Photo: Amelia Entertainment)

Since 2017, we have been studying the availability of local content on the major subscription streaming services operating in Australia. Our latest report, which examines Netflix, Stan and for the first time, Amazon Prime Video, confirms that the level of local content on these services remains modest, although the number of original productions is growing.

There is also increasing variation between the three services in terms of the kind, age, and genre mix of Australian-made material they carry. The entry of Disney+ and Apple TV+ next month will add new complexity to this rapidly changing market.

We were surprised to learn how much Australian content Amazon Prime Video offers (over 400 Australian titles). However, Amazon is significantly different from Stan and Netflix for several reasons, which make direct comparisons between these services misleading.

Netflix: few local titles, but increasing investment

With an estimated audience of 11 million Australians, Netflix is the clear market leader.

‘Tidelands’: Dangerous Sirens Come to the Surface in Netflix’s New Australian Series
Elsa Pataky and Charlotte Best in Terre de marées (2018)
If a group of mystical beings ascended from the ocean and insisted they now controlled your town and everyone in it, would you push back at all? That’s the central question at the heart of “Tidelands,” a new Australian Netflix series that sees modern-day sirens planning to overtake the community of Orphelin Bay. Of course, there are skeptics, people who are wary of these new “tidelanders” coming to infiltrate everything.

Then, guys show up murdered, sprawled out on the tops of cars. There are guns involved. Bad news ahead for Orphelin Bay, it looks like. As the people of the town figure out who to trust, old legends and new obsessions form the backbone for a series that looks like it’ll fill the “Siren”-sized hole in the hearts of all those Freeform viewers.

“Tidelands” is yet another international series designed to load up Netflix’s queue of...
