The decades-old unsolved murder of a young girl is re-opened in the mystery-thriller The Silence.

The decades-old unsolved murder of a young girl bears an eerie resemblance to the recent disappearance of a 13-year-old in the 2010 German mystery-thriller film The Silence.

In the movie, a young girl is brutalized and murdered on a hot summer day by Peer (Ulrich Thomsen) as his helpless friend Timo (Wotan Wilke Mohring) watches.

The unresolved crime yields two decades of grief, guilt and obsession in the lives of everyone connected to the victim. But when a 13-year-old girl goes missing 23 years later — on the same day and the very same spot as the original murder — the police suspect that the same killer may have resurfaced. Not surprisingly, unhealed wounds are opened and fresh dangers begin to appear…

The Silence | Review
History of Violence: Odar’s Debut a Sweaty, Slow Burn

Swiss director Baran Bo Odar adapts Jan Costin Wagner’s novel The Silence for his film debut, a murder mystery thriller filmed in 2010, finally getting a much deserved theatrical release. Filmed in Germany and featuring a multitude of notable European names, including the presence of Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen, whose presence lends an odd twist to the proceedings, Odar’s film feels akin to a number of Scandinavian genre exercises that have been produced over the last several years. But whereas most thrillers focus on unraveling culprits, Odar’s film is an examination of ‘why’ terrible deeds happen, exposing a host of characters that are expertly developed, sometimes at a detriment to the pacing.

In the sweltering July sun in 1986, an 11 year-old girl named Pia is raped and murdered by Peer Sommer (Thomsen) as she crosses through a field on her bicycle.

The Silence Trailer and Poster
Baran bo Odar
A retired investigator is called back onto the job in director Baran bo Odar's thriller The Silence, which follows two cases that have eerily similar connections. The story centers on a 13-year-old girl who goes missing in the same spot where, 23 years prior, a young girl was savagely murdered, a case that still remains unsolved. Krischan (Burghart Klau&#223ner), the original investigator assigned to the case, comes out of retirement to try and unravel this bizarre mystery. Music Box Films has unveiled the first trailer and poster for this gripping nail-biter that will have you on the edge of your seat when it debuts in theaters March 8.

The Silence – review
Transposed to Germany from a highly regarded police procedural novel set in Finland, this psychological thriller turns on the unsolved rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl by a Danish emigre who's accompanied by a guilt-ridden fellow paedophile. Twenty-three years later, in 2009, a copycat killing takes place in the same stretch of countryside, which leads to a recently retired veteran cop reviving a cold case that still troubles him. It's an unsatisfactory film that makes one interested in reading Jan Costin Wagner's source novel.

The Silence – review
This icy, gripping police procedural thriller is easy to recommend for fans of The Killing, and indeed for anyone else, too

Fans of The Killing – and, in fact, everyone – should rush to see this icy and gripping police-procedural thriller from Germany. It is directed by 33-year-old Swiss film-maker Baran bo Odar, making his feature debut, and based on a 2007 novel by Jan Costin Wagner. Burghart Klaußner (from Haneke's The White Ribbon) plays Krischan Mittich, a careworn detective about to retire after 44 tough years. He is haunted by an unsolved case: in 1986, an 11-year-old girl was abducted while riding her bike in a remote field, then raped and murdered. Her body was later found in a lake, and the culprit never caught. On the day of Mittich's retirement, and on the exact anniversary of the girl's disappearance, another girl on a bike is taken on the very same spot. Old wounds are reopened,...
